Hey @Mark Lewis - What muscle groups does the Ski thingy hit? Is it pretty much the same as rowing, or are other muscle groups used more? If I were to use a punch bag (left/right continuously) would that be similar?? I presume its quite heavy on the aerobic system, but not so much on the legs (even tho you use legs, they are not the limiting factor??)

Great video, and really interesting simulation to watch! Like you mention, a lot of the strenght obstacles are just suited to be done by the stronger person. It would be cool if in the future Hyrox finds a way to enforce atleast a certain percentage of shared participation. Nevertheless the Hyrox doubles is an interesting segment to an already interesting event! I found that Hyrox offers 3 divisions for duos: women, men and mixed. How much faster do you think a doubles men team could be compared to a single athlete’s time (assuming they have a similar fitness level)?

How does the M1 tank sled compare to the ones used at Hyrox i.e. Is the maximum resistance on the tank equivalent to the men's weight on the sled push?
@MarkLewisfitness
@MarkLewisfitness 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a bit complicated really - the magnetic sled basically moves at a set speed no matter how hard you push it. So my wife can push it on the same setting as me and just go slower to have an easier workout. Obviously that’s impossible with a regular weighted sled that she wouldn’t be able to move. People that try magnetic sleds say they are not the same as real sleds - that is true, but for training purposes it is vastly easier to work with and steel taxes the same muscles.

@Stevenc1984
@Stevenc1984 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds odd, but running faster is the best way to improve your form. Depending how close you are to sub 20 you may want to try 1km repeats slightly faster than your 5km pace (if you're around 21:30 or faster). Over 21:30 you may want to increase your weekly millage, until you're a little closer. Good luck, keep working, you'll get there!

I'm starting my fitness journey and want to train for the Hyrox event. Which approach do you prefer when training the specific tasks: start with the correct resistance/weight and work my way into the distance and times or start with lower weights, get a good time and up the weight and resistance to match the time? Hey Mark! Just wondering, on the row, is it not possible for Jen to do her 500m or so first, followed by you going all out for the rest of it? This way Jen is rested and ready to go run
@MarkLewisfitness
@MarkLewisfitness 2 жыл бұрын
So if Jen jumps on the rower straight after a run she would have to go all out to hold a two minute split for 500 m. I would then have to get on and roll a one minute 30 split for the next 500 m and even then we would end up 15 seconds slower than me doing the whole thing because of the change over. On top of that, Jens subsequent run, even though she’s had a one minute 30 rest will still be hugely compromised so we will lose more time there. Which ever way you slice it, Jen touching the rower loses us time-it’s just annoying that the rules let us loophole around that.

It feels like a good format might be that both male and female athletes have to BOTH complete each task with their respective weights carried over from singles with time only stopping once both have done so. That would be a much better measure of the pair and feel more like a true equal footing. Obviously reduces numbers / requires more equipment, but definitely a better option probably.

Surely the easier solution to the couples participation balance would be for hyrox to split the tasks down the middle for compulsory participation. Ie, Mark does all of the row, jen does all of the burpies etc. Essentially creating 'specialists' in respective events. Pretty simple to adjust marshalling to suit this I would have thought.

Interesting issue regarding the spectator situation. Giving it some thought I would think Hyrox could stipulate that it’s a 50/50 split and then you have to decide which each will do, they could use the chips to place the partner in a partner zone to watch the other that way they would know which one was doing the given event etc.

You can really optimize your rowing by learning to row - At the moment your knees are in the way both on the pull and the recovery, and that is not because you are tall 😁It would be cool if you got in contact with kzbin.infovideos, he has the same mentality of leaving nothing in the tank when training, I think you would get along great. Maybe this is a stupid idea, but couldn't each team person have a QR code linked to their team when needs to be scanned when entering the zone to signal which member is competing in that task. 8 task, each team member has to do 4 each you nominate the person as you enter the area of who is doing that even. How that's split depends on the team, but this is something that seems at least in my slightly drunk head to make sense and force team work rather than cheerleading as each member is doing an equal amount of the task.

I have not done one of these events but could they put in a rule where the each competitor in a mixed team has to do a minimum number of tasks solo (i.e. not split between two). so if there were 10 challenges and the minimum number was 3 challenges solo, each competitor would have to do 3 challenges for a total of 6 (female competitors could do the female equivalent weight/distance). Leaving 4 challenges that can be shared or completed solo by one of the competitors. I don't know if challenges are grouped into categories i.e. strength, cardio etc it could be mandatory for each competitor to complete one of each solo, assumiung there are multiple challenges per category.

Great content Mark. How about attempting James Cracknells Oxford vs Cambridge boat race effort on a rowing machine?! That’s gotta be close to 20 minutes of insane effort?!?

Lol. On having a cheerleader! I’m a pretty strong 32.01min 10k runner and thought I could do this with one of my club’s strong female athletes!!!! Occasionally would call her in whilst I take a 20 second breather on the burpees etc. But it’s just not in the spirit of it. I’d love to see some rules about minimum amount each of the pair has to do. Then again I’d love to see drug testing to on any event offering significant prices. Can’t have it all though!!

Great video Mark, and very inspirational as always. As a 37 year old, who resembles something like a melted wheelie bin at the minute, my fat to fit journey starts tonight. Keep up the great work pal. Atb, Ryan

This is easily one your best videos Mark. Re the erg. Jen starts, pulls her max for 30-40 secs at 2.00, then switch and you pull 1.30-1.40 ish for the remainder. You'll be slightly less fatigued and you share the load. I'm with you, it should be a 50/50 split. Jen should have to do the sled pull, push with women's weights, you with men's weights. You pull up and down twice, she pulls up and down twice. Seems simple to me but maybe I'm just simple.😁

Great video, really interesting to see how you’re preparing. Maybe Hyrox could introduce some kind of Bonus Seconds system? For example one that rewards teams that split the tasks, to offset time losses from switching the gear over. Marshalls would have a clicker and you get 10 seconds off per switch or something. Or just have two sets of equipment (1x full weight and 1x half) and both team members do everything but you can choose who does which one if you need to rest and you can switch if one team member completes one of the two before the other.

l love you guys, but is it just me or is Jenna's HR strap WAY too low on her???? it's practically on her stomach.... I tuck mine under my sports bra strap so it doesn't slide down when sweaty....

Are you still training for Ironman and if so how's the swimming coming along? I'd be interested in a video on how swimming is going because I'm currently training for an Ironman (first one) and it seems to be my (and a lot of people)'s hang up. Keep up the great vids

Strange format. Why not just make the event rules that you have to run together and you both have to do half the work load each on the machines with a standardised mens/womens strength load. Is it literally just a logistics thing because now everyone need two sleds etc?

First Hyrox Solo in Oct (Birmingham). Haven't got a scooby about timings, I think I'm just going to aim to get around. Having said that, would love a sub 1hr 30mins. Best of luck, especially with the quickest row on the day.

Love this video. I think its very insightful to see two people with different levels of fitness work together in an event like this. It's also great to see someone with a basic level of fitness improve and then perform well in a short space of time. Well done Jen.
