Wow, amazing! Taking it somewhere totally unexpected but so great. Like Dorthy going into the poppy field.

@@MuriMorello I bought one on eBay last year on your recommendation. Played Oleo at the session a couple of times. (Mine was stolen from Chick's hotel room by a junkie in Nice, France in the 90's, according to the seller, who bought it from the junkie for 50 Euro bucks. He sold it to me for a five figure price. I figured if it would make me swing like Herbie and Chick, well, a bargain. O well. I still get nice comments on the cool retro look. Goes well with the loud 90's print silk shirts i bough second hand from Jack De Johnnette's dodgy cousin form Camden, NJ a dude named Rooster . )

sometimes I just think that the band say "fuck off" to the form and play whatever they want. I mean, Miles did that with his second quintet in live sessions, so it's very much alike they're doing that
@kleinequietboykleinequietb71266 жыл бұрын
they can't and don't completely ever do that. they always end up on the one of the first bar together. they are just able to play such stretched time, in 5, 7, 3 against 4, loose time, and altered versions of the harmony that it sounds like free jazz or without form. Personally i don't know how the fuck they manage to not get lost. I know all these tunes, play them, and i can't tell where Herbie's bands in the form 80% of the time. It's kind of annoying to me.

@@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126 First you hear 2 beats (ding-a-ding), then 4, then 2 bars, then 4 bars, then 8, 16, 32..., i mean your'e capable of play anything you want inside thoses 2, 4, 8, 16, 32... , knowing (feeling ?) where the first beat of the next sequence is. The form becomes easier when you feel exactly what 8 bars are... Sure a lot of work and a lot of rythm gift...
@samcoffeymusic2 жыл бұрын
Listen to the bass if you wanna know where ur at in the form. And count. But rhythm changes is a very simple form that you can open up and play almost anything over as long as you show the V to I cadences from time to time.

@@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126 I play this stuff as well and I have no problem following these guys on this performance. I get that Herbie is very good at obscuring the harmony but its always pretty obvious when hits the bridge
@JJamJ3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure Herbie screwed the head after the bridge😬
