Lemon Balm was one of the first herb I grew for making herbal drinks. I had very little money for food and gas for my car, aches and pains both physical and phycological (anxiety), and no health insurance. That summer I went outside every morning and picked a few lemon balm leaves, a few volunteer raspberries leaves and raspberries, a sage leaf or two, and one peppermint leaf. While the mixture steeped I ate the raspberries and made oatmeal. I drank my herbs outside watching birds. At the end of July my daughter was very worried. She said there was something wrong with me because nothing bothered me! I harvest enough lemon balm for the winter but switch to the fresh leaves as soon as I can. For me there is a huge difference in the effect they have. note: I have a sluggish thyroid and have noticed no ill effects from lemon balm

So does dry lemon balm work as well as the fresh?
@deborahmathis20003 жыл бұрын
I use it for one symptom and for me the fresh leaf seems to work better. It might be that I use it more in the summer because it is hot outside and I drink more water. I think fresh anything is better. But personally I would not grow something that I was not already familiar with. That’s just me. I have a very small space where I grow things in pots and in the case of lemon balm it was economical for me to grow and dry my own. I hope this helped.

We just bought a house where the previous owners actually built the house. We have just started the first spring here and I love seeing what is hiding in all the gardens. Everyday feels like Christmas! I discovered very quickly that the yard is covered with lemon balm! 😊 I'm so happy, and I enjoy my tea as I await to see what appears tomorrow. It occurred to me, maybe that's how the previous owners actually were able to enjoy this home for over 60 years! Passing in there late 90s! ❤❤

Thanks for the info! I have had many encounters with the benefits of lemon balm. The first time that I saw its miraculous results was about 15 years ago when my daughter was feeling really sick after eating ham that wasn't totally fresh and she was on her way to the hospital. I went to meet her and on my way I purchased a small bottle of water and a Melissa tea pouch at a cafe. I placed the pouch inside the water and brought it to my daughter... about fifteen minutes later when I arrived my daughter was pale and yellowish feeling the digestive discomfort typical of food poisoning, she started drinking the cold tea from the bottle and once she was finished she was feeling 100% better. Before my intervention she was headed for the hospital where she would have been left to wait until a doctor would attend to her and probably bombard her with all kinds of medication. I have used and abused of lemon balm since then as it grows in my property. Last night after having eaten way too many Star cookies which immediately made my stomach feel bloated, I went to bed feeling quite uncomfortable and soon after I had to get up feeling quite miserable which led me to the bathroom with chills. I picked some fresh Melissa threw it into a large cup of boiled water and started drinking it after letting it steep for 5 minutes. After half a cup of tea my total discomfort started to fade and several sips later I was back to my normal self! This is absolutely true, I recommend this plant to everyone. I usually chop up a few bits of the plant which I add to my salads! It's a godsend!

Add cold tap water then set onto the stove and bring it just to almost boiling. Then set the pot aside and let the pot cool to room temperature. I then use a fine mess strainer to strain it as I pour it into a large beverage dispenser that I keep in the fridge. My kids drink it like kool-aid!

I had too many plants here, and in my enthusiastic yanking out, I almost eradicated it from our yard, but a few plants persisted, which I am now babying..... some growing almost in sunny conditions, others in partial shade. Strangely I was cutting back my recently departed Mum’s garden last week and came across a small lemon balm plant in the front garden behind a large shrub. It must have so somehow seeded itself, as I remember it growing in the back garden a few years ago but someone employed to help dug the whole border up! I wasn’t aware of how many healing properties it has, but I did notice the lovely aroma. When I return to finish the garden I will dig out the lemon balm and bring it home. Thank you, Rosalee. I greatly appreciate your expertise. I enjoy your books. I attended online college at Cornell this winter and was so stressed. I wish I had known the great benefits of Lemon Balm during those stressful months. When school was over I developed a tea recipe with my lemon balm. It was so delicious and calming I have it frequently now. If you'd like to see the recipe, I'm happy to share. :)

@@elizabethhallowell5115 Here is my recipe: Pour 2 C of water in a small pot on the stove. Cut the mandarin orange in half and place it face down in the water. Use a large spoon to press the juice out of the orange. (Leave the orange in the pot.) Add 2 tsp. rose hips. Cut the leaves from three lemon balm stems. Place leaves in the water. Discard the stems. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Add 1 full/rounded tsp. of molasses (or other sweetener of choice) Stir well. Simmer 5 minutes, then strain. Enjoy a healthy, delicious herbal tea.

I used a lemon balm salve on zona. I had made it for my niece and so had it when the zona started... it really felt like I was on fire, I put the balm on around my waist a few times Day and night, before any eruption appeared. I also started taking licorice root tea twice a day, ( I remember splashing the tea on my waist once!) and added lemon balm leaves to it. I only got a few eruption spots and only had three days and nights of pain. I kept applying the balm for a couple of weeks because that brush with zona scared the heck out of me. Pretty impressive how painful it was!!! The salve I made was coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax, heated and stirred dried lemon balm leaves into it, added one tablespoon of powdered licorice root and some calendula. Heat just a bit, let sit overnight, reheat just to melt, then strain.

I bought a single small plant of this from a lady with a greenhouse a few years ago and several other herbs from her. I planted my first herb garden and in less than a year the lemon balm took over my entire herb garden like a weed. While the only other plant that survived in my garden was a rosemary (The rosemary is struggling to live, I'm not sure how to help it... 2/3 of it looks dead.) I couldn't be happier having so much lemon balm. It smells great and i've been trying to start making tea from this herb since it grows so easily now. Biggest problem I have is making the tea strong enough. I'm about to try dry leaves to see if it works better than trying to boil fresh leaves. (My rabbit loves this herb too! I'm careful to give her only small amounts to be safe though.)💫

My hobby is looking at plants for food and health, I have loads of books on plants that heal and I’m wondering why lemon balm is not mentioned in most, and they don’t mention enough benefits of lemon balm. I did my own research into lemon balm online with scientific research and I have come to the conclusion that this amazing herb is being suppressed. Thank you for a great video, I have purchased your book and subscribed.

Alas, I don't have a garden anymore. I used to grow Lemon Melissa in my garden and other herbs too, like lavender, thyme, mint and sage. I often would drink an infusion with mint and lemon melissa. But I consider myself lucky, for today I live in de Himalayas and here an amazing amount of different herbs are growing in the wild. I go out to clipp lemon melissa, different types of mint, sage, thyme and stinging nettle. Also camomille is growing here, but I don't appreciate the taste (maybe I should "learn" to drink infusions with it). You're a good teacher, I only started to follow you since yesterday. Thank you for your teachings!

What a perfect herb Rosalee! Yes, even though I grew it in pots, it had spread ALL OVER my garden, including the cracks in the concrete despite the high heat, lol 😆 It is one determined herb to seek my attention! So with that said, I will start harvesting it and enjoy the benefits. Thank you very much! ♥️🌱♥️

And I learned about Rosemary Gladstar from Herb Mentor, John and you. Oh, and don't forget tulsi. I love tulsi and lemon balm. In the morning before I leave for work, I take a couple of lemon balm leaves and a couple of chocolate mint leaves and rinse them. I rip them at least once and drop them in my water bottle (which has a straw and flip top). The leaves never get sucked up into the straw, and my lunch and afternoon water has wonderful flavor!! I do refill towards the end of the day on the way to the gym-but the flavor isn’t as strong as my earlier water.

Thank you for this great video Rosalee. I grow Lemon balm in my garden, two fine plants. I love the tea that I make daily from this great plant. I did not know about the myth of the bad effect on hypothyroidism, it is interesting. Lemon balm makes a lovely tea with a pinch of chamomile and a little honey. But aside from this, I just love looking at the plant, it's a fine plant.

I had so much in my last garden that I made it into pesto a number of times with tahini, garlic and once cucumber. Although that tasted pretty good, I never settled on a perfect foody application, (pasta was not it. Maybe just a salad dressing would be good). It's a little fuzzy, as a food, even blended, if I'm honest. I think syrups, teas, oxymel and tinctures are the bravura applications. Love your channel!

I use Traditional Medicinals organic lemon balm tea as it was easily accessible and of excellent quality but now that I have a garden allotment I have just planted my very own lemon balm plant! I am looking forward to harvesting and trying your recipes. I no longer require thyroid meds and I believe lemon balm was definitely a contributing factor. New subscriber here. I just found you this morning and listened to your video on lemon balm. Amazing. I had no idea that it was so useful. I also had no idea why I felt like I should plant a lot of it this year other than just keeping the bugs off the porch now I know what to do with it and I do have a freeze dryer which will come in very handy. Also I have a Natural practicing doctor that told me that lavender EO used on little boys Causes them to have small testicles. I’ve been doing EOS for years and had never been told that. But it’s good to know that the lemon balm will take care of bug bites and itching just like the lavender and it’s also calming to help you get the little ones to sleep. I’m going to start putting it in my diffuser at night. Thank you for your much in form video I plan on watching many more.
