A HERD Hero, Never Forgotten | Elephant Carer, Kenneth Shambira

Today we say farewell to a cherished team member, elephant carer, friend, and father, Kenneth Shambira. Born in Zimbabwe, Kenneth was part of our family, helping to look after the elephants at HERD since 2009.
When he started in our team, he had no experience with elephants. Our team took him under their wing as a learner and taught him everything they knew about elephants. He was a natural and adapted exceptionally well in a short period, quickly becoming one of our treasured senior elephant carers.
A very sad day fell over us all earlier this year as Kenneth's heart stopped in the bush, while he was out walking with the carers and elephants. In this video, our team sends their deep condolences to Kenneth's family and community and shares our deepest thanks and love for this HERD hero.

It truly is a beautiful tribute to a very caring and loving man. The personal messages had me in tears. We are so lucky to have this inside look at what goes on with the Ellies and their caregivers but we never see the inside of the relationships between the carers themselves. This is such a heartwarming video to hear how much of a family they are to each other, and it’s not just a ‘job’ to them. I saw that also! They definitely can tell and show empathy to their own, which Colben basically is.❤ I watched a short documentary that followed a herd of an elephant family through their territory. The herd had come across some elephant bones that were all dried and white showing it had been there a while. The matriarch stopped and had them circle around and they each picked up the bones and passed them around to each other. The narrator was explaining how we were witnessing them showing sympathy, empathy, and compassion on the death of one of their own. Not one in their specific family, but of another herd. It was truly remarkable to see! I wish I could remember what it was called because it was a while ago. But I would bet that if you searched with any keywords relating to the topic, you’d be able to find a clip of it. It’s so worthwhile seeing it happen. Truly heartbreaking yet heartwarming at the same time.

I woke up to this very sad news this morning. My heart goes out to Kenneth’s family. I asked my son in heaven to meet Kenneth a the edge of the clouds and walk him into heaven. My son joined the Marines right out of high school and when he was packing he handed me a beautiful marble elephant. I had always loved elephants but didn’t know any of my kids shared my love. When I mentioned this to him he said “mom, of course I love them. We both have big ears. We still laugh at that. I hope these two wonderful young men meet in heaven and share their love of elephants together. My heart goes out to Kenneth’s family and friends. Many blessings to you all.

So sad to hear of Kenneth's passing. So caring with the elephants. Look at it this way - he had one of the best jobs in the world, was loved by all at Herd, and the elephants too. We should all be so lucky. Peace..
