Wake Up at the Homestead with Baby Elephant, Khanyisa & the Herd! 🐘

The first of many new mornings! We catch up with Khanyisa after her first night at the homestead, as she starts the day with Limpopo and Kumbura and bonds with the females in her section of the homestead, as well as sweet Fishan. We are discovering what new routine suits Khanyisa best but it appears that she is doing well receiving her supplementary food and morning milk bottles out in the field, outside the homestead, before she and the herd head out into the bush together. Khanyisa’s little body is blending so well into this new scene and she certainly appears to be very confident, handling the new chapter with great courage and positivity, as she has always approached everything!

Many thanks for this update. Khanyisa looks very confident. It is interesting to see how sensitive the elephants react to changed processes. And how easy going they cope with it. Im absolutely fascinated. I feel so privileged to be able to take part in all this behaviour and reactions! I've come to admire Fishan so much! He has stepped into the role of helping the allomothers protect Khaniysa which I find so interesting given he is a bull. In spite of everything he has been through, he has not allowed his trauma to change his disposition. He has a huge heart and is always such a gentlemen and so trustworthy! He is one of my favorite elephants now.

The things I love most about this video, 1) Khanyisa starting to hand her bottles back instead of dropping them 2) the way Adine talks to Tokwe, mother to mother, matriarch to matriarch. 3) how Stavros knows exactly what Khanyisa was doing all night, (because even though he'll say he got some sleep, we all know he probably stayed up all night to make sure his darling little friend was alright) 🤗😊❤️

Khaynisa 🐘 looks like she had a good night. It was very interesting that she was standing between Timisa 🐘 and Pisa 🐘 during the night as they were sleeping and also slept on her sand mound. She's an orphan with no access to the milk she should be drinking -- though HERD does its best to match the nutrition that helps sustain her. A few extra pieces of potatoes to give her a boost is not unfair. If equality is important to you, please do donate to HERD so that every elephant can get extra treats in the evening.

Anyone else get the feeling this a bit of a new adaption to the morning routine, as if the Elephants currently most in charge of raising Khanyisa, are there to let you know they know she needs her breakfast milk before they head out for the day, as she has always been given that meal before being allowed to catch up with the herd. Definately feels like they are at the milk drive up with an order for 4 bottles, but baby is staying in the car with them. Felt like Fishan arrived and joined the females with Khanyisa and placed himself between them and the carers and stared very intently as if he wanted to make sure you knew how well Khanyisa had been taken care of all night and you did not have to be concerned and there was no reason to consider this anything but a success and to know she was staying with them now and not going back to the nursery. It's going to be interesting how they will deal with something that takes her back to the nursery even for a short time such as a weight check or a vet check.

If they take her back to the nursery at all- she is reaching the maximum weight for the scale; Adine mentioned it not too long ago. She will be too big to fit in the stall. Vet can check in her in the homestead, just as he would any of the other eles. I think Khanyisa is finished with the nursery. Just my thoughts.

Yes, I loved the group standing at the fence waiting. They knew Khanyisa needed her milk and your "drive thru" comparison is perfect! I also noticed that the carers and Adine brought her milk and bucket of food farther out into the bush away from the nursery and the homestead perhaps to avoid a confusion or another commotion like we saw in the earlier video. Oh and seeing Lammie and Nungu was a nice touch!

Adine I commented you, and the Cares, integrating Khanyisa into the Jabulani Elephant herd, while dealing first with Khanyisa severe injuries. And the Jabulani Elephant Herd has welcomed Khanyisa into their family, and have been reach by her how to be n Elephant. And yesterday I saw the Elephants take her into their Herd completely and like you indicated Adine, The Jabulani Herd will continue to raise Khanyisa. Well 👍 done.

They are just as comfortable with her there as they have been. They are aware of the responsibility they have for her and are doing great from what I can see! How intelligent these animals are! Tokwe and the rest of the ones around Khanyisa KNOW that there is something significant happening with baby girl spending the night with the big Ellie’s! They know something different is underway. It’s easy to see why Tokwe is the leader! She is so intuitive.

As someone who knows almost everything about elephants from watching HERD, it looks like Khanyisa is even MORE loved now that she sleeps with them!!!!? So happy the 1st nite went well-good work HERD and also, the HERD elephant family for accepting Khanyisa so readily.

Elephant #1: She is fine…I told you she is now our family, family takes care of one another. Elephant #2: She was a little worried not having you guys out there with her, but after some trunk rubs and kisses she settled right in. Elephant 1: We appreciate all that you have done for her and us as well as what you have done for our troop, it makes us happy and makes us feel wanted instead of hunted. Elephant Troop in unison: Now where is breakfast? Khanyisa: where is my bottles and sweet potatoes? 🐘🐘🐘🐘

She's doing great...I was a little anxious about her being out there ...lol and checking on her watching her transition every day. I think the shape of the apples is difficult for her... I wanted to help her pick them up. Can't they be cut into quarters instead of flat?

I love the lazy bones out on the mound. Maybe I need to do that with my bad knees. Works for me! K is growing up. She is ruling the roost (she thinks) in the new "hood". I am pleased all went well last night, it must have felt strange for Khanyisa. 👃👃 She reminds me a little of me where food is concerned, eat fast and not good at sharing.😂😉😂

Felt a bit teary 😢 reminded me of empty nest syndrome when my sons left home. She is so grown up now but will always be my baby elephant 🐘 💕 ❤️
