I was the lead background artist on this game. It was my first game, having previously worked on cartoons for tv. Weirdly when I left Core Design , I got a job at Eurocom and worked on Sphinx😀

As well has the comment below, I’d just like to say thanks for the humourous, informative and truthful review. Having not seen this game for over a decade it’s a proper nostalgia trip for me. Herdy Gerdy, was at times a pain in the arse to work on but as time as passed I realise that it was also the most enjoyable job and job that I’m still proud of even today. We had so much freedom and input in those early days. The review is completely spot on about everything... especially the camera😂 But, we were all noobies. We all put a lot of love into that game and we’re all still making art in one way or another ❤️

I could not be happier that someone on the team got to see this. Thanks for commenting, you guys made a seriously unique game that had an impact on my life, and I really hope more people get to learn about it! Also, not gonna lie, I'd LOVE to see some of the raw artwork from this game someday. You and your team did some stunning concept/design work and it really shows in the games final look.

One of the kind of game that should get a remaster. Small, flawed games with good ideas in them being given a second chance.

I remember sending an email to Eidos asking them hypothetically if they would sell me the rights to Herdy Gerdy, a property they will never revisit again, they shut me down. But then again asking them in a couple of sentences wouldnt be the most convincing.

I'm honestly surprised anyone actually completed this game let alone wrote an analysis on it. I used to act like this was a cult masterpiece to friends who hadn't played it just so they could experience this fucking nightmare of a game. Visuals were like Jimmy Neutron meets Winnie The Pooh. Anyway I'm glad someone actually talked about Herdy Gerdy so I could ramble on about it myself. Nice video.

Wait the same guys that made Herdy Gerdy made Tomb Raider games? Huh. That aside it's nice to see someone actually took a look at this game. I never finished it but I always thought it was a rather interesting novel experience. I'd never really been sure what to think of the game to be honest until I saw this. I mean I do kind of like the game but it's always been an...unsure kind. Like the fact DmC got me to actually look into the DMC franchise.

The only memory I have of this is game is seeing it at a shelf at a store and being so terrified by that big creepy bear-thing on the cover that I got nightmares from it. I thought I was the only other person to have ever played this game! The witch's house was one of my favorite, but incredibly difficult, levels! I get the feeling that this would actually make a really inventive 2D animation movie for something like Netflix . . . particularly if it was taken up by someone like Don Bluth (I got serious Thumbelina and Troll in Central Park vibes with this game). I like your descriptions of how to manage the difference unique creatures!

I remember getting this game cause my parents only buy $20 games. I loved it so much... even with how difficult it was. I remember only getting as far as the sand caves with the ants (could never figure out how to get the ants to herd them). Put it down for several years and replayed it from the start. 2nd time i got as far as the wood and the scared baby bear was my downfall. Couldn't figure out how to beat it and then put it down. I still have the game (i think) but now I want a remake of this game. Been listening to the sweet and amazing music, the funny but really endearing voice acting, and the art style is just lovely. I really wish someone could remake this or even just port the game with the camera fix, would be awesome... but I doubt it'll ever come back from the dark. one can only wish.

Glad someone made this, my dude. Even though I was never too into this game it still weirdly meant something to me. Like a game I was wholly uninterested in but surprised no one else had heard of. I can still hum some of the music from time to time. Weird. What I will say positive about the game is pretty much most shit outside the execution. The concept and the world and the story and the characters and creature design were always so solid that I honestly still do want to go back and try to finish the game. I just also know I’ll want to tear my hair out.

Fun fact; Though I am known as Blue, despite this name not referencing the person who I in fact actually am, the name my parents gave me was Donovan, named in tribute to the musician Donovan who incidentally produced the song "Herdy Gerdy Man", in tribute to what this game was titled. So I was actually excited to purchase and subsequently own this title. I felt genuinely berayed.
@Ahturos4 жыл бұрын
Wow finally I never remembered the game, just the front picture to the game and I thought it was some scary nightmare thing with that monster chasing you. But I am suprised, the style is really nice, Herdy reminds me of the boy from Iron Giant so I agree very Don Bluth style. That is very uniqe, I think a more action or quest adventure game with this designs whould be wonderful for the looks alone.

I played the PAL version of Wallace and Gromit, moved continents, and now own the NTSC version. For whatever reason, the american port is displayed at 240, or even lover resolution (even the menus and the HUD). I guess it was programmed in Europe, and they couldn't figure out how to port.

I just bought this game from cex and played about an hour and tbh, it's genuinely gorgeous, the soundtrack is really really nice, but the camera and frame rate are so piss poor, the animations for characters are really bare bones. There's just no polish (like when you fall into deep water and the music just cuts out. No short commiserations skit or anything, just abrupt silence). This whole game feels like the definition of not finished. I feel like if it had just a few more months in development, it'd be something really special.

@degurkin3 жыл бұрын
I 100%ed the game when I first bought it when it came out the Weakest levels by far are Foxtown and the fact that you have to 100% complete it with no choice not to and the bee area which felt entirely undeveloped (also the Cave of Gold but I do not count that as a level (and the mountain going up, not the ice mountain but that one is just hard, not exactly poorly designed) I have to say when I started playing the game definitely fooled me into believeing the Narrative and worldbuilding was deeper than it actually was, I was chomping at the bit learning more about how the world operates, what the difference between people and animal people was and who the rival was and what his plans are And then I got to the final level beat the pathetically easy challenge and the game just kinda.... ended? No questions asked are answered by the game it feels like art for arts sake nothing that is thrown at the wall is contextualised I hoped it would be, with the final island showing all the master herders and their place in society and how society operates nope you just herd some Doops and you win GG
