I agree the spine needs to be either 90* or made into a 90*. That’s what I look for in knives irregardless of brand! Thanks brother.

Meh, 90° spines are about as overrated as Altoid tin kits in my opinion. I feel it's mostly a KZbin survival "expert" thing. I never use the spine of my knife for anything other than maybe a place to rest my thumb or index finger.

I just like mine for shaving fat wood and or bark. Also I like to have it so I can if needed strike my ferro rod. Among several other uses I can use it for if needed

Blackie, you showed another very important reason for the lanyard hole but didn't say it out loud.....being able to put bright colored cordage on the knife. Bright cord helps you find it if dropped or to see it before sweeping across the top of a stump where you laid your knife down. I got lucky and had to get a couple of stitches.
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS Жыл бұрын
exactly if its that important it needs orange on it to help locate it

Rumor has it this is the reason for Swiss army knives to have red scales. I routinely carry a neodymium magnet. That helps finding the knife without needing stitches. Just be sure to get some distance to the box with the magnet before using a compass.

I agree with most of your points. I prefer the tip to be one third of the blade width from the back. It fits the way I grip the knife better. That does not invalidade your point about having the tip aligned with the center line. For drilling holes I usually use my Victorinox anyway.

Hello Blackie- Your 5 points are in keeping with traditional bushcraft. When I was in the Army; I carried a Gerber Prodogy, which I put thru quite the testing and it is one of the best survival/bushcraft knifes Ive ever owned. These days; I carry a Mora Garberg and I have a leather sheath which is very similar to yours. My 5 points: 1. Full Tang 2. Fits comfortable in the hand 3. Drop Point 4. Scandi Grind 5. 90 Degree spine......... Oh, one more thing- a lanyard hole would be nice. Thanks for the advice, Blackie-

Good list. I recently purchased a Joker Ember. It conforms to this list. The only issue is the lack of a crisp spine. The extended pommel has a crisp edge for scraping and will do the job but I plan to take a file to the spine to get an edge for scraping a ferro rod and fat wood.

Good tips, The grind,ie saber. The sharp spine kinda digs into my thumb, though I get it, oh high carbon for striking sparks 🔥W.C.s woodsman grind.

2 other things I look at, 1 how beefy is the handle . Does it fill my hand comfortably, not cause hand cramps and hot spots. 2nd what material is the scales made from. Are the good and grippy. Will the be slick when wet?

Had the same Enzo Trapper for years but much of the work with wood (to a point) I prefer to do with a Sheffield made Barlow, you get used to being that close to the work and I just like the idea of using something that a frontiersman would use and has stood the test of time.

Blackie, what materials other than a leather may be used for your DIY knife sheath? That folded pattern. Something cheaper than leather

Only Sir, if it is waterproofness, you just coat that sheath with 'resolene' and you are 100% waterproof.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS Leather work isn't so hard Blackie. You get an exacto knife and a stencil and carve a stencil out of thick leather. You just cut along a thick metal ruler or a stiff plank to get your line. Next you use a 'stitch marker' to mark out the sewing lines and hammer a pricking iron (looks kinda like a sharp fork) in, to make the sewing holes. Next its a matter of sewing it together by following the holes. Finally there's whacking a little dye on, colored to your taste. Theres videos on youtube showing how it may be done. To finish off use oil or resolene to waterproof the leather. I know nothing about sewing and I have been able to fashion some real nice sheath and axe sheaths. Getting the tools together and having a try is a VERY rewarding experience. Its nothing like sewing cloth because the leather is rigid so it stays in place really easy as you stitch it. Its extremely easy once you did it the first time and got it worked out.

I believe a sharp portion of the spine as opposed to 90 degrees is what most people are trying to communicate.

My edc is a Kephart belt knife. My woods carry consists of four cutting tools. Primary utility is the same Kephart. I do NOT process wood with it, as I can build all the fire I want with wood I can pick up. I don’t understand all the batoning. If I do want larger wood I carry a Silky Gomboy saw and a Council Tool Woodcarver hatchet. I can use those two tools to process bigger firewood or build anything I want. I also carry a small SAK for detail work. The belt knife is a general use blade that in a pinch can do most jobs, but why abuse it? Just go prepared.

Top five points??? How about a sharp enough edge to cut stuff!? Sharp enough spine to scrape stuff?? Exposed pommel for hammering into wood. Light enough to hang around neck. Grippy enough handle so you can hold on to it.
