I fuck up my deadlifts a lot, this is how you should pull...hahaha. I'm for listening to advice, though to say "you" should leverage behind the bar is not a absolute. Some people do successfully, some people use a different cue. I like much like Jamal believe in personally everything in position so when you break to lock, it's a str8 pull. The thing is we are human and don't have the same strength or mechanics. We cannot say "Jamal, you need to leverage behind the bar." We need to listen open minded like Steph says and possibly take a cue from a person or find our own cue and see if it accomplishes the end result which is pulling as much as possible on the platform when competing and what is appropriate during training.

Joe's talk about bracing was super helpful. As a taller lifter, it's always easiest for me to brace at the top because I struggle with positioning and getting neutral spine when bracing at the bottom. However, I always braced at the top with a big breath and then tried to hold it (which is a problem when I pull hookgrip, which feels much better to me than mixed grip). It sounds like he makes a conscious effort to separate the brace from the breathing to a degree. I also realize I need to be thinking more ribs down in my deadlift. I use that when bracing on squat and it has totally changed that lift for me. Awesome video. Wish Jamal had gotten more air time, though!

People saying that they don't want to hear Garrett's input don't realise that you can't just copy the best sumo puller's form and expect it to work for you. Garrett is giving out textbook sumo hook advice. Ray Williams breaks at the knees and braces his back rather than his abdomen. He's arguably the greatest squatter of all time, but people shouldn't try and copy that without learning the basics.
