I'm a massage therapist and I worked on a powerlifter lady who fallowed the hybrid program. She was the strongest in her class in the state and had a chance to go to the Arnold classic.

I have watched a number of her "technical" explanations and I find them fascinating, but the common theme in them all is listen to your body, see how your body reacts to this or that. Keep a log. I cant stress how important that was when I was just starting out in my teens, 40 years ago. It can be hugely frustrating for a beginner who does not yet know "how to listen, to your body" that's where a good training partner and a log will help you.

Very important for me = keep a training log! Not just weights, sets and reps, but also how the session went, how was performance, fatigue, etc. This way the lifter learns a ton about how his/her body reacts to the training load. Thanks Stefi! I tend to stay in the 70-80% range, especially in the deadlift, and this sure gave me some size and stamina, but it made me liable to become mentally blocked by heavier weights. I know now the likely cure -- pick a load that limits my speed while still allowing me to complete good reps, albeit reps that will challenge me and require 100% focus. Awesome information! Keep up the great work, both in training and elsewhere! Best of luck for your next meet!

You have crystallized principles I have heard about in other contexts but had not put together in their proper relationships. @@gcg8187 That’s my problem with certain debates like whether or not intensity becomes more important the more advanced you become. You can cite research showing no benefit in muscle growth from doing 60% of 1 RM sets vs 85% but it’s not ppl who have 5 or more QUALITY years of training in those studies. It seems to be the case that ppl struggle to get their numbers up without doing higher intensity. Most ppl don’t know this but 90% of your strength is from how much muscle you have, that other 10% comes from practicing maxing out on a lift. It’s the difference between doing 315 and doing 350. Or a 495 deadlift vs 500 if you used a weight you can get 2 reps with instead of 1 rep. That’s why you see “bodybuilders” hop on a “powerlifting” approach and their strength explodes in just 1-2 months but after that the number isn’t going up without gaining muscle. It also ties into whether or not leaving reps in the tank is a good idea for advanced lifters. Failure is another method of intensity so one could argue if you aren’t maxing out weekly (there’s a safe way to do all you do is rotate the variation of a lift so your muscles are taxed in slightly different ways) then you probably would get better gains leaving 0 reps in the tank 24/7 which explains why many swear by it

This just clued me in as to why I was so much stronger 5~ years ago when I pushed multiple sets to near concentric failure, which I rarely do anymore. Time to get back to it!

Phenomenal video!!! 👏👏👏. Elucidated a lot of the agonizing doubts that i had about specificity and progress. What surprised me was that i didn't heard about those things before even though i study a lot (probably not in the right direction, i suppose) and you explained in a simple and eloquent way which i'm really grateful. It's really reassuring to know that i don't need to spend a lot of my time doing hypertrophy if i don't want to. Because what i'm really interested in is Relative Strength (and this is a topic that i'm just starting to study). This is what made me interested in you in the first place! Because of your 4x bodyweight deadlift, so i watched your interview with jeff nippard and what was more vital for me than any method was your mindset, how fearless (yet responsible) you are, i wanted to be like that too.
