Here is Why Batman's Costume Was a Complete and Total Disaster!--Batman 1960's.
Things sometimes aren't so pleasant off camera while filming a TV show. The Batman costume was a complete disaster for Adam West. How? I'll tell you in this video. Did they fix it or was a more creative solution discovered? You'll have to watch and see! Enjoy!

At least Adam West Batman costume was accurate to the comic books. Which is pretty rare nowadays for Batman still.

Wasn't the last big screen Batman suit modeled almost exactly after the Dark Knight Returns batsuit? Even the bat-armor design was straight out of the comics. Batman's looked hundreds of different ways in the comics.

Unfortunately for me, they were in paired episodes. The first episode of each pair would always end in a cliff-hanger, with Batman and Robin in all sorts of trouble. Then at the start of the second episode, you would see how they managed to extricate themselves. My prob was that there was always a show on another channel that my parents liked to watch at the same time as the second Batman episode, so I would never get to see how the "Dynamic Duo" would get out of their predicament... And that sucked big-time, let me tell you 😁

Very interesting Rick. Never thought of the problems and discomfort with the costume. Remember this is also filmed in L.A. where the weather is hot 1/2 the year making it doubly or triply stifling in his get-up. So the final product we watch seems great but to make it comes with plenty of problems! Reminds me of your video on Herman Munster's problems and the almost deadly consequences of silver body paint for the original Tin Man Buddy Ebsen(Jed Clampett of Beverly Hillbillies fame) in the 1939 Wizard of Oz.

@@rsine100 Bring me up to date: I'm not familiar with what they've done with the character since I tapered off DC comcs in the early 70s. He didn't have body armor in the 50s-60s and no one bitched about it when Adam West played him without any. For all I know he's switched to body armor since those years. I did check Dark Knight out of the local library a few years ago and I don't recall him wearing it then. These days I'm also out of the loop with Marvel - is Spiderman now body-armored too? Whatever the case, realism isn't a factor; this is a comic book superhero we're talking about. Batman got me through gradeschool, highschool and college with nothing but fabric between him and the bad guys.

Even when I was little and I watched Batman on TV........I always wondered why he was so stiff. It was like he had a body cast on. I think it did help with the Batman character though, because he needed to differentiate Batman from Bruce Wayne, and it actually helped him do that.

What a great way to show off your new expensive color TV in 1966.

I don’t know if it was the advent of HD or I just never noticed it as a kid, but I was shocked at how different the cowl’s dark blue hard plastic part and purple fabric colors were. Even watching this video it’s jarring...

Even as a kid, I wondered how it was that no one recognized him. Some police commissioner Gordon turned out to be! A hilarious aspect was that a villain's goons wore matching tee shirts, and etc. Apparently, color-coordination is paramount to a successful outcome of an act of crime. Still, I loved every episode-especially when Cat Woman showed up! Yes, I had the Batman night light, piggy bank, Batmobile (with working rocket launchers and battering ram), and Batman with a parachute. Oh, and there are Olan Mills photos of me as Batman and my little sister as Robin in a box somewhere.

I thought the theme music, with such simplicity, and the lyrics of just "Batman" was the most awesome, catchy song for that era. And probably still is🤘

When “ twins are not” by Microsoft came out. The first thing i tried was giving it pictures of Clark Kent and Superman for example. Microsoft wasn’t fooled. However Microsoft couldn’t match batman and Bruce!! You know. In the adventures of Superman there are at least two episodes where Clark does not wear glasses in front of the other characters and they didn’t recognize Superman

That was not all. Every example of the shiny hood West wore in costume was stitched around a plastic bowl-type cap that had no give. He told Jeff Rovin that every time he pulled any of them on, he was convinced that they were all hastening male pattern hair loss!

Maybe that was taken heavily into consideration when they later developed Batgirl Yvonne Craig's costume mask, because the eye holes in it were much larger!

On another similar topic! For the same reasons, when you watch episodes of CHiPs, notice how in scenes where Ponch and John are on their motorcycles out in a street or on a highway! Since they obviously can't have any dialogue in these situations while wearing helmets they will often just look back and forth to each other and nod! The funny part to me is that they remind me of "The Blockheads" from Gumby!😜

This exactly is not unique to West. All of the actors had a hard time wearing the suits. His was only fabric. Imagine trying to act in a more complex suit like the rubber versions.

Agreed the costumes in the 2 Batman movie serials make the Adam West suit look perfect. But even those actors deserve credit for bring Batman to the silver screen, and they didn't even have a batmoble. LOL
