As a kid in the mid seventies and early eighties, it seemed obvious that they wouldn't risk the actor's safety by having them climb up an actual building. Just by the way they were crouched and walking it seemed obvious they were crawling on the ground. It's possible they could have been in good enough shape to do it. However it wouldn't have made sense to risk their safety.

It's funny how as a kid I never questioned the fact that they always went to the same building and window. Did all the villians live in that one apartment? HOLY CRAMPED BATMAN!

There were no DVDs yet at the time. And episodes were aired weekly, not daily or in this age of DVDs, BlueRay and downloading whenever you wanted to watch whole episodes one after another. In 1966, nobody was able to view a perfect picture unless he got a strong signal off his rooftop rotating antenna. So nobody was really able to notice that the same scene or background was often repeated.

Rick, One of the funniest segments on the entire show. I think the creators purposely had them climb the building in a cavalier easy-looking way making it so ridiculously funny. I loved how they would pause climbing and Robin would look back and asked Batman a question or Robin would take his hand off the rope to say Hi. Funny as hell.

You are correct in saying this. They walked the fine line (no pun intended) of keeping it cheesy, campy, but also keeping it grounded as well. But even that’s a stretch

I used to call the wall climb the Laugh in clip because just as in Laugh in there were cameos of people who would be behind a window or door. The episodes that they didn't have the cameos were a let down since I got used to seeing stars who weren't part of the show appearing. I have all the show episodes and hope to find all the movies someday.

There were a couple of times, though that the cheesiness of this effect wasn't caught entirely and you would actually see the points of Batman's cape not draping the same way as his cape was being pulled! Also in the one where "Suzie Knickerbocker" looks out the window she's wearing dangly diamond earrings that also don't hang properly!! Funny stuff! There's actually about a 14 minute long video someone compiled here on KZbin of all of the wall climbs and celebrities they encountered!

The Wall Climb was my favorite part of the show. One interesting one was when The Dynamic Duo met The Green Hornet And Kato. Batman was basically like, "Welcome to Gotham." A few episodes later, the two crime fighting teams are battling each other. All previous pleasantries were forgotten. The Wall Climb should be brought back to the Batman franchise.🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇

As a wee lad, loved the show. As I grew older and wiser AND then saw the early 90's Batman cartoon, I asked:"Why were they making this campy?" With that said, the Fox station in my area had this female host on in the afternoons during the Batman/Superman cartoons. About the same time an FM radio station experimented with a talk radio format (it didn't work, but Karen had a 2 hour shift at the radio station) and one day on the radio station they were talking about homelessness. A woman called in, crying, because she was going to be homeless the next day. Karen couldn't have been kinder to her. It was deeply moving. About a month later Karen was at a theme park promoting the afternoon cartoons. I came up and complimented Karen on her radio work and thanked her for helping that woman. That really made Karen's week. She couldn't stop thanking me. I still love the Batman cartoons, they fleshed out characters as never before or since (the movies don't reveal the deep psychological pain of some of the super villains. Neither do the comic books).

One thing I've always wondered about was the bat climb at the end of the Batman movie. It was a faraway shot and you'd see two figures descending. Were they acrobats or some sort of stuntmen because I cannot picture Adam West and Burt Ward agreeing to do the climb for real.
@michaelmckenna6464
@michaelmckenna6464 3 жыл бұрын
The only way Butt Ward and Adam West could’ve done their own stunts would’ve been if they insisted or demanded it. Otherwise the unions would’ve raised hell! The actors’ Union would’ve been furious for putting their actors at risk while the stunt actors’ Union would’ve raised hell for depriving their members their work.

I enjoy your videos and always appreciate your research. While I've always known how this trick was done, it's still interesting to see the broader images of the set. I did note, even at the time, that some of the cameos look a bit "odd" when they peep out the window. When the frame is rotated, some cameo actors appear to be facing more downward than outward. That's one of the things that betrays the otherwise good optics.

My all-time favorite cameo was with a Hispanic comedian (I forget his name) said he was a jury Forman and he was on a break from deliberations. I believe Batman reminds him of his duty to make a fair decision. As Batman and Robin ascend up the building the jury renders its verdict and the comedian says “Fellas? Could you leave the rope?“

I think that it was 2 years ago or so that I saw something like this on Dancing with the stars. They did a dance that looked like they were going off the walls and ceiling but it was all about the camera angle and the room was actually slowly spinning to make it look like they were walking upside down etc... It was cool. I always have been amazed at what can be done with a camera. Seems like Chuck Norris is the only actor that really did climb the walls.🤯

I always wondered if the background moved along with the camera to help sell the illusion that the buildings were further away than they were. I also bet they rigged the camera 90 degrees to shoot sideways on a tripod too. And the people at the window must've gotten a good core workout when they would "lean" out the window. I imagine they were laying down on a platform inside the window or maybe they were standing, it's hard to tell. Actually, looking at some the photos here, it could be the building they were walking on moved as wheels can be seen. That would make sense, then the camera and background could stay stationary.

I always thought that was obvious. So many visual clues. I watched this as a child in the late 1960s, and I could tell even then.

Virtually all the old movies used the same technique. I remember watching this show on TV and laughing because it was so obvious they were using strings to stretch out the capes.

Holy disillusion! I'm in my 60's and ALL THESE YEARS I thought FOR SURE that they actually climbed buildings as they were depicted in the show. Wow.
