Does anyone else have issues shifting a 3 on the tree transmission?

My first car at 15 was a 47 Coupe it had a great 6 cylinder and yes 3 on a tree. But the previous owners could only get 1st and reverse. I studied the linkage to learn that it worked very different than the nearer 3 on the tress like our 64 Chevy Pickup. It had one main shift arm but the motion in neutral from the R-1 gate to the 2-3 gate moved a small lever on the inside of the Main Shift lever and that caused the main shifter arm to work either the R-1 shift or the 2-3 shift. In working that simple action in neutral i learned that the small arm was not moving the small lever far enough to engage the 2-3 gate smoothly. I adjusted the rod for a little more movement. Hoped in and started it up and took off down the country road 1 st gear launch nice and easy, then clutch and shift smoothly in 2nd, let out the clutch and the car propelled forward in 2nd, all i could do was laugh out loud, i was so happy and proud of myself, then clutch and shift to third YES! Even more louder laughing, all by myself. i was going 40, 45, 50 holy cow. Laughing faded to yelling "YES I FIXED IT!" I didn't even have my learners permit yet. I turned around and headed home. As i pulled into the drive way of the farm my Mom was out the door running after me. I pulled around back where i was working on the black beast, and she came walking up. What are you up to? Oh Mom i fixed the shifter, it only had 1st and reverse but now i adjusted the linkage and it has all the gears now, i just tested in out in the hard road. OK OK That is so nice but honey you gotta stay in the barn lot until we get insurance and you get your learners permit. Yea i know Mom but i had to test it at 20 and 30 so I could see if I had fixed the shifter. Can you believe it i just figured it out. Well , did you know your Grandpa was a engine builder for the NASCAR Fords long ago, maybe you have some of Grandpa car skills. I a, proud of you but stay in the Barn Lot now ok, Yeah OK Mom, I am gonna work on the body and paint now. Absolutely 100 % true story, Sounds just like mine grinding those gears you need to adjust the small arm linkage a tad longer. I hope you understand, when you get one going again it is like a happy pill. Great Ride, All the Best, Dennis in Virginia

When I was 10 this car was 10. I rode in a lot of late 40’s early 50s cars with my father an uncles. They always cruised at 60 mph, I used to hang over the back of the front seat and check the speedo. Sixty was no big deal! Yep, I remember all the kids standing up in the back seat (feet on the floor) and bugging everyone in the front seat until you got slapped away!!! My mother would put the babies bassinet on the rear floor of our Plymouth Business Coupe. Those days were fun!!!

Nice car. I am 64 now ,but had one when I was 18. Thats a 216 engine. The car came with a vacuum assist shift. They were usually worn out so you take your time going into second or you could double clutch. Very good condition. Take of it and have a blast driving it.

I so envy you. I love the '48 Fleetline for it's "art-deco" streamlined styling. I agree with everything you said about originality and living the era driving it. It seems the seats were reupholstered at some point. The original was a pinstripe mohair. it looks good though. I never drove a "3-on-the-tree", but know that second requires half up, inward, and fully up to shift to second correctly. Diagonally getting there can cause problems. Very nice car. Get the original skirts with the stainless moldings and a visor to make it look really streamlined.

' 48 Fleetline Aerosedan is my Holy Grail car! Absolutely gorgeous lines! Mine would be bagged and body dropped but still. I just picked up a model from 1998 that someone had on ebay, can't wait to build it. Keep up the slick customs and props on keeping this one OG, they are only original once and this one seems to be like the perfect example to let survive.

Yes, I have issues with 3 on tree, my dad's first car was a '54 Dodge Coronet with one, and he tried desperately to teach me to drive it, but I could never get the hang of it. The 4 speed 69 Ford Pickup-based wrecker, I learned fairly easily in comparison.

I have driven 3 & 4 speed on the tree, but the one that really gets me was doing that on a right hand drive car. I prefer a floor shifter so there's no bushings and linkage to wear out.

I am not sure what it is about this car but man does it have a presence. ..almost the demand of class from a Dusinburg but more refrained and with a Hurse like quality. ..I have always liked the Fleetline it can be nerdy or mean and nasty with a monster power train ...

I know it's been 2 years since this was posted but I had a similar problem with my 47 Nash 600. Intermittently It would grind or not go in gear when I shifted from 1st to 2nd, so I decided to rebuild the trans, when I did I found that 1st there was a bad Bering, 2nd the friction rings were warn and the clutch ring driver were also bad, after replacing all the warn parts it now shifts like a new transmission.

The Gear shift linkage is not normal. the movement between gates is a serious adjustment that must be accurate to get a smooth 1 to 2 shift. If you study the linkage and have Jolene move the shift arm you can see how it is supposed to work. I did get my 47 to shift smoothly. But i wanted a floorshift. I learned that a later Model 3 speed transmission shifter side plate allowed the use of the normal floor shifter like a Hurst. But the original sideplate works totally different. I hope you figure it out. What is the price? Dennis in Virginia
