I have the same manual shift buttons on my F-350. Not sure if it’s the same for the Nissan but it’s used to lock out higher gears which is useful for towing up hill to avoid the automatic from shifting up and down repeatedly. Yes I can go to full manual mode but it’s only useful for towing and low speed pulling. It’s not for full race mode but Doug is the kind of guy who will drag race a Diesel truck cause it has a manual mode.

I'm one of those guys that refuses to own an automatic, but my company bought work truck has a similar switch on the column shifter. I use it all the time when I'm driving. I manually downshift to engine brake coming up to every stop light, just like I do in my manual cars. I'm just glad the manufacture gave me some method of telling the transmission what I want it to do. I hate not being in full control of my vehicle.

Got news for you... FCA was on the lookout for a TD for their Ram 1500 and Cummins provided 2 options, a 5.0L V8 and a 2.8L I4, both being rejected by FCA 'cause (unknown to Cummins) they (through VM Motori, a Fiat subsidiary then and now) were already developing what would become the EcoDiesel, a 3.0L V6 w/ higher output numbers than those of Mercedes similarly-sized engine on their Sprinters. By the clauses of Cummins supply contract with the old Chrysler Corp. Cummins couldn't sell any LD or SD/HD engine to any other marque until FCA rejects the offer. Once FCA rejected both engines then Cummins offered both engines to Nissan, who took them gladly (the 2.8L hasn't yet been installed in any of their vehicles at the time of typing). Sadly to say, the 5.0L wasn't an option because FCA wanted lower fuel compsumption numbers than the 3.0L was able to offer, besides the fact that it's theirs (probably at a lower cost as well) and FCA felt that an I4 (they already had a VM Motori one of similar size to Cummins on their Jeep Liberty and overseas Wranglers) was insufficient for a full-sized pickup. If FCA got the 5.0L Cummins they would've need another lower output / more fuel efficient engine below it anyway...

Dawson Strachan not entirely true. This engine was nearly completely design with Chrysler for the 1500...but then 2008 happened.

The VM Motori 3.0 V6 Eco-diesel has been powering the Jeep Grand Cherokee since 2011, and several Maserati models too. The Cummins 5.0 V8 has ofcourse a lot more torque. I hope we will see it as a marine engine too, in competition with the Yanmar/Toyota 4.5 V8 and the Mercury/VAG 4.2 V8 diesels.

Anybody else notice that Doug never really mentioned the fact that this has a Cummins v8 turbodiesel? At one point, he calls it "Nissan's turbodiesel". It's a good review, but I feel like he should probably at least mention that this particular diesel makes the Titan XD MUCH more capable at towing than the Nissan gasoline v8. He kind of skims over the fact that it is a Cummins, which is a pretty big deal to a lot of people.

Not really a problem since he... showed that it was a Cummins engine? So there is no need to say it's a Cummins engine? I mean, I agree it's definitely not "Nissan's" V8 but still. Edit: Now that I have researched it, it's a joint production between Cummins and Nissan. So no, you are completely wrong.

Its sad that Nissan isn't taking off with the Titan. As someone who has owned the American trucks and now owns a Titan Platinum it is definitely worth it. A solid competitor that deserves more attention. It has a far better warranty than the other offerings, better towing and bed capacity. In my opinion it looks better and the platinum reserve trim is definitely comparable to the F-150 King Ranch or Platinum or the Denali. It is definitely not perfect and the other trucks are great too but it atleast deserves respect as a solid contender now with the big three.

It's probably been covered, but the shift buttons are typical for most truck/truck based vehicles with a column selector. It isn't so much for manual shifting as it doesn't lock you in the selected gear. Instead, it sets the maximum or highest gear the truck will shift into. This is useful for towing (avoiding overdrive gears) or crawling (going down hill and using engine breaking).

Doug is dumb, he doesn't realize those huge lists of time zones are part of one (or more) standardized databases. He probably thinks Nissan just randomly came up with that list. One thing to note is Canada/Saskatchewan has been deprecated in favor of America/Regina. This essentially holds true everywhere - it's now Region/Capital. So Manitoba would be America/Winnipeg. Nissan is probably using an old or custom version of the database which still uses some of the more common (deprecated) zones like US/Central.

love the vids! couple points: this technically falls into the "heavy half" category. most recently it was occupied by the silverado 1500HD. basically it's a 2500 frame and suspension with a 1500 chassis rating - because let's face it: a LOT of users overload their trucks. difference is GM (and dodge when they used to make one in the 70s and 80s) cobbled theirs together from the parts bin while nissan designed this truck from the ground up to be a heavy half. in pickups the "tapshifter" isn't so much for shifting as it is for locking out higher gears. it's called an electronic range selector. allows the trans to shift thru all gears up to the selected one, so if you're towing close to GCWR and don't want to stress the overdrive gears (5 and 6 in the Aisin trans in the truck) you can select 4. it's also helpful in keeping exhaust gas temp and coolant temp down while towing on hills to use a lower gear with higher rpm. the cummins engine is an evolution of the 5.0L v8 bluebird has been using in busses for over a decade now, so it's a pretty robust engine. the transmission is the same that was used in the last generation dodge 4500 and 5500 cab & chassis models. the axles are AAM 9.25 and 11.5, same as currently used in ram and GM HD trucks. the transfer case is the same New Process unit used in current ram and ford HD trucks. this driveline (the primary reason to buy a diesel) should be pretty darn bulletproof with basic maintenance and clean fuel...

This is a higher trim model that did not exist long ago from your frame of reference. Pickups have changed drastically in a way that makes the top trims more expensive. The base models are still cheap for what you get. You can find a new Nissan Titan for 35K new. You can buy a Ram with Cummins for 40K. And that is a lot more power 2X from 20 years ago. You can thank the EPA for a lot of the diesel cost added. There is about 10K worth of crap that most folks take off that helps reliability and MPGs. I drive a F250 and think it is worth every dollar. It is a truck designed for over 250K in miles and the scorpion engine is claimed to last for 1M miles.

You say that the shift spot is stupid. That's the same location and method used for the big 3 HD truck manufacturers in the United States, for the past several decades. My 2008 Silverado 3500 had manual mode like that and my new 2018 F250 has it in the same exact spot. Its not for downshifting to pass, its purely for towing convenience, locking out the higher gears to allow the engine to rev up into where the power is.

Even with no trailer, this is a VERY comfortable truck. LOVE our XD and will be hard-pressed to "upgrade" to a typical 3/4 ton or higher, standard truck. I used to be a Ford guy, but this truck moved me to Nissan. I hope they bring it back to the 2017 PR Level in the future. Until they do, I'm sticking to my 2017 XD (PR). Great truck for its range.

Alex West I’m confused so if you use the column shifter on M then when you shift to 3 it’ll will only shift up to 3 and won’t go any higher?
@JingleBop
@JingleBop 6 жыл бұрын
You set the column shifter on D. Then you can limit the top gear by using the buttons. Example: use the buttons to select 3rd. The transmission will only shift from 1-3. Set it on 1 it'll stay in 1st gear. The button only limits the top gear it'll be using. I assume it has a 6 speed transmission. On older 4 speeds the column would roll thru PRND321 (3 limits it to 3rd gear and under, 2 keeps it in 2nd no matter what, same with 1st). On the new 6, 8, and 10 speed automatics that'd be ridiculous to have PRND54321 all on the column shifter. The buttons just simplify it.

Just added this truck to the collection and I am extremely happy with it! I almost like it more than my Ford Raptor... which is something I never thought possible as I LOVE my raptor.

I just thought it was more funny to insinuate that Jay Leno was the mom. But seriously though, doesn't he remind you of Leno, at least in looks?

For a diesel I expected more towing capacity, this isn't a powerwheel with a 12v. Makes the Ford Eco Boost look like a bargain.

Like doug said its kinda a risk to jump right into a heavy duty truck because the only people that buy it are people that need a truck like that. They want to make it more universal so they can sell them and continue further into the truck scene.

Thing is diesel have that high torque so when towing it still maintains its power plus the fuel mileage would be better that the EcoBoost while towing

Guys, my experience with Ecoboost is at 41K miles both turbos failed and timing chain jumped a cam link. This engine is a Frankenstein and designed to fail. I have been told by a couple Ford mechanics not to tow with it. Hard on the turbos. Not bashing Ford because they paid under warranty. My issue is that would have been my cost as soon as it was out of warranty. I am praying to not deal with the same issue on the Nissan with the Cummins diesel, but time will tell.

Expensive, for a truck! Is it the drivetrain, costing so much? None ot its features or looks appear to be worth much to make and install.

Dan Daman ??? Relatively reasonable for a truck. Ford is about to release, or just did, an F-150 Platinum edition, completely loaded, just over $100 grand for you to take it off the show room floor
