Howard McNear as Floyd was a great character, some hilarious lines. He was quite funny on The Real McCoys as a junk dealer, and on by Donna Reed Show as a neighbor. Such great memories of Floyd, “You know, in Mt Pilot, there’s a barbershop with 5 chairs “. 🙋‍♂️🙏

Rafe Hollister should have starred in a movie about Babe Ruth. He looks and sounds like the Babe.

TODAY THE IDEA OF A BARBER WEARING A TIE WHILE CUTTING HAIR SEEMS RIDICULOUSLY UNIMAGINABLE!!!!!

He was in two Elvis movies. Blue Hawaii and Follow That Dream. In those movies had a lot of Floyd's mannerisms. Which of course made it that much more enjoyable watching him

Howard McNear was great. He showed some of those mannerisms. There was the music teacher on I Love Lucy. You've mentioned his appearances in Elvis movies. One more serious role was as a doctor in the Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy of a Murder. He also voiced Doc Adams on the radio version of Gunsmoke. He was funny even in short scenes. One was in Divorce, Mountain Style. Barney and the white horse ended up in Floyd's front yard. That scene sometimes gets cut in syndication. Eugene Levy once played him in a Godfather spoof on SCTV. His performance was very good.

It was sad about Howard's declining health but even with a stroke...His mind was still sharp and Andy knew that he was a part of the Mayberry family and he wanting him back with the gang...say what you want about Andy but he was a good man.

If you listen to the Gunsmoke radio show, McNear played "Doc" and you'll notice he carried many of his mannerisms with him to the Andy Griififth Show.

In college in the early 1970's, I had a professor who I thought resembled Floyd. Not in mannerisms but in looks. One day I came to class, sat down at a desk and saw "Floyd the Barber" written on the desk. I was not the only one. We all loved Howard.

This might sound odd, but I thought he was funnier after his stroke. The speech pattern and half sentences were hilarious. He was great in the episode where Andy didn’t get that job and he didn’t file for reelection and Barney wanted Floyd’s support.

Howard was Floyd the barber in real life. Even if you look up some of the other shows and movies that hes been in, hes pretty much the same character. It worked out well for him though.
