The engine in the Bugeye isn’t stock, the velocity stacks on the SU carbs are a give away. The original SU’s are 1 1/8 inch ID, those are 1 1/2 inch ID from the later MKII MG Midget/AH Sprite. To make the bigger carbs work it surely has a higher lift/duration cam, probably head work done to make it fully compatible with unleaded gasoline along with a bump in compression. Love Bugeye Sprite’s, I own one now that’s next on the restoration list come fall. Easily my favorite vintage car ever and this one looks like a good buy at $20,000 US as prices for these cars have been rising the last year.

Tyler just learned something that the sports car industry has forgotten, that horsepower isn't everything. The horsepower and 0 to 100 sprint races are ridiculous because that is not the way most people drive, even Porsches. The Sprite gives thrills because it is open, agile and low to the ground; the 356 is elegant, quick enough to cruise the highway, and oh that air-cooled engine note. However I am amazed that the British produced Sprite has stayed ahead of the rust.
@rustler08
@rustler08 3 жыл бұрын
What? First off, the car industry has done an amazing job of making performance-focused cars that handle well on a track. Even the Mustang GT and Camaro SS are very decent track cars, and the ZL1 and GT500 are downright amazing, also the Porsches are certainly monsters on the track. Even Tesla put work into making the Plaid model a decent car on the track after hearing people complain about how lackluster the Model 3 was. So, I have no idea what you're talking about. Sounds like you're stuck in the wrong decade, or you just are completely oblivious to modern times. Second, if you're talking about small cars that are fun, there's the Fiat 500 Abarth, Miata, 86/BRZ, Porsche's own 718 GT4, etc. Either way, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I can now say that Hoovie finally caught up with my wife and I. We have a '61 Bugeye and it is beyond cool. At car shows, everyone stops and love it. We let little kids have their picture taken in it and the grins are overwhelming! The only problem we have is that in our 70s, it is kind of hard to get in and out. Congratulations Hoovie.

You will love this car Hoovie. Making the frog eye go faster is easy. The A series engine is a very simple engine to breath on and it was used in almost every Austin and Morris car for fourty years. The Mini shares the same engine and switching it with a 1300cc block is easy and bolting on a pair of big Strombergs gets the Sprite shifting like sh*t off a shovel. I remember many nights bent over my Sprite in my dad's shed. The only problem was upgrading the brakes. Back in the day there were very few options so mine got launched over a hedge and came to rest in a plowed field while hooning around the back roads of Kent. Lovely little car.

I took a ride in one of these about 30 years ago with a friend who was considering buying it. I have a 1976 Triumph Spitfire that on a good day maybe made 60 hp. I take it on the highway all the time and once I get up to speed, and have a bit of momentum, I'm always yelling at other drivers that there's no reason why I should be passing them.
@docgiggles130
@docgiggles130 3 жыл бұрын
@@danieljennerman7549 The computer controlled CVT the Caliber has is draining power to try to save fuel. Your 60hp is more than enough to pass a Caliber because you don't have the cars computer trying to stop you from entering the power band. It is a weird feeling to drive though. They put a tach in the dash, but when you push on the gas the RPMs hardly move. You just start gaining speed because the computer is adjusting the CVT 'gearing' to make you go faster. Don't yell at the driver of a Caliber for their slow acceleration. Pity them because they have no say in the matter.

Genuinely, I have been following your channel for a while now, but this latest purchase is by far the most exciting thing you have bought! It's not a car you get in to, it's a car you put on. I've had a few similar type cars, classic mini's mainly, which are so much fun to drive. Not quick by any means except in the corners. And then seeing the looks on people's face when I get out....I'm 6'6.. By the way, you can easily tune these up....engine swap to a double carb 1275 is easy.

The frog eyed sprite is absolutely a product of it's time, there were no wide roads and gentle curves in the UK back then, little C roads no wider than two of these mirror to mirror, and faster B roads where you could wring every ounce of it's 40hp out. These cars were built to go fast around corners and get you from A to B with a grin on your face! There are mods to get these to go faster, bored and stroked engines, different carbs, but all in all these are perfect to feel like a driving God

@@tawesssoabbox absolutely, but it would be hard to get the weight balance right.
