I thought the very sa me. Dirty rider, cheap shot punch , bumping and lugging into the 11 horse. Should have been a DQ. I even had the horse on my tickets. But stewards are the biggest of crime. Now I'm wonder if they were directed to not let the japanese horse win an american event as big as the derby. I've seen some dirty races but this one really had me take a good look at why this happen and the jockey getting away with it and only a $2500 fine.

@@ericpkingston1327 Well, I'm probably a little older than most of you guys, maybe not, but anyway, I've seen a lot of racing from before 1960 and on and it could have been a lot worse. Crazy worse. It has really cleaned up. That's not even arguable. It's never gonna be perfect even if the purse was $500k or $5 million. How they handle the fines is a whole other question. But how I saw it during the actual race was both horses were giving no ground bumpin and bangin close to the top of the stretch and on to the finish. I personally don't take issue with (some) of that. That's simply competitive racing to a point; however, when a jockey reaches over to plainly, obviously impede the other jockey, that should simply be grounds for disqualification considering how the rules are written.

Yet Sierra Leone has been ridden to herd the other horses over toward the rail moving from the middle of the track over toward the rail. It would be a shorter distance for him to be ridden straight because ground is lost in the move to the left. IF Sierra Leone had been ridden straight to the wire from the middle of he track he might have won the race. Regardless, Forever Young was not so easily bullied. If the judges disqualified a horse for a racing incident of that type, , there would be even more outcry. I feel the jockey was protecting himself. or his horse. I respectfully disagree! Tyler Gaffalione is a world-class Jockey! He has won big races and titles at big tracks. What you say, Sir is not true at all. The trainer should've changed the racing bit in the horse's mouth plain and simple. The horse lugs in. That statement is a fact. You should give your horse and Jockey the best chance to win. Changing the bit and giving the Jockey power steering with a better bit, not a loose ring snaffle. A Houghton bit or a burr. Chad Brown is to blame. He's a world-class trainer, but didn't change the equipment to help the Jockey, knowing that the horse would have to circle the field and he lugs -in! A better bit would have helped keep the horse straight!

It's too late for the horse to be taken down from second place. They already made the race official shortly after the race was over. The fact that there was no objection by the other jockey is why the stewards didn't review it at the time and possibly move up the 3rd place finisher to 2nd. An American jockey would have objected to the finish, but perhaps the Japanese jockey was being gracious and did not do so or didn't understand the rules. So now, all the stewards can do is fine the jockey after the fact for his race riding.

The level of corruption at Churchill Downs and with Kentucky horse-racing in general knows no bounds. First, it was the heavy drug use by trainers and their corrupted Vets on these wonderful horses, and sadly record number of horses breaking down, now it's Stewards who look the other way. Outrageous behavior and is only hurting the overall reputation of the sport. The entire nation saw multiple fouls - even by the winner bumping and pushing his way through on the rail - not to mention the stretch run - yet 3 Stewards saw absolutely nothing. It was the outcry after this injustice that forced a later review of the 3 blind men, and then a mere slap on the wrist as a "fine".

I am going to comment as someone who rode and trained racehorses for many years. This situation is quite common on the race track. Because they were in the home stretch and the cameras were on them is the only reason there was a fine at all. There are sometimes all out brawls between jockeys in a race. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean this is not a common occurrence. Yes, the Japanese jockey could have called foul but didn't know he could. Jockeys get whips in the face and horses get punched and pushed. When you are riding a 1,500 pound animal in a pack of other horses of the same size going 40 miles an hour it can get quite spicy at times.

@EMPRESSGLADYS The way I view the race,on the turn entering the stretch Forever Young veered out a bit, which is normal around turns, making contact with Sierra Leone but after than Sierra Leone repeatedly bumped and impeded Forever Young the length of the stretch to the wire. I respect your observation I just don't agree with your analysis.

No, it did not. The Japanese jockey did not raise an objection after the finish so the stewards didn't look at it to determine if the order of finish should change, so it was made official at the time. Under the new law affecting racing they review all the jockeys' race riding to determine if they struck the horse too many times with the whip or exhibited some other type of dangerous riding. All they can do is fine the jockey and/or suspend him from riding.

@@suzanneyoung8011 The stewards can D.Q. a horse on their own. They don't need the Jockey to file an objection. They have the say in the matter. They should have filed an inquiry sign, They are taught this at the Steward's school under ROAP, and the ROAP CE classes. It's common knowledge for all horsemen. The stewards are the ruling body on the racetrack.

@@abc12356659 I'm aware of that. I heard they didn't do that because the jockey didn't file an objection. They may have thought there was bumping by both horses so left the order of finish as is. Under the new law they are reviewing all the riders to see if they violated the whip rule, and this situation probably came to light at that time which is why they are now issuing the fine.

The Japanese side didn't file any complain for fault after the race, infact the Japanese jockey Sakai even defended them and said that there was no problem and everyone was just trying their best, and he found it didn't affect the race. Forever Young was pushing and pushing Sierra Leone farther and farther out away for no reason and without the intervention by Sierra Leone's jockey, both horses would have went down in a very ugly mess. Sierra Leone would have one the Kentucky Derby if Forever Young's jockey knew how to ride a horse in a straight line not across the track. Forever Young would not have won the race and that horse and jockey should be thankful for the intervention as it saved both horses lives. So come on Naysayers lets hear the flack.... ugh Ha and just maybe Forever Young was just sent to the Kentucky Derby to ruin the chances of Sierra Leone being another Triple Crown horse as he most surely would have been just can't believe penalties were not given to Forever Young as well ....
