I bought a new 2002 TRD Double-cab Prerunner V-6 with a rear locker and it was the best vehicle I've ever owned. Drove it for 18 years and sold it to my nephew with 275K miles on it and it is still going strong with over 300K on the odometer. The locker got me out of most anything I got into and it was a workhorse. I built or renovated 4 houses when I owned it and it was loaded to the gills with lumber and supplies many times and it kept on going and going.

That won't be the case this time around. Toyota's 4.0 V6 were simple which made them reliable. Now? It's complex like the competition. Expect a hit in reliability for Gen 4. No where near the Gen 2 or Gen 3

@@moctezumaaleg2008 It had the factory trans cooler that sends the trans fluid through the bottom of the radiator. A lot of people add an aftermarket trans cooler and plug up the factory arrangement because it can leak into the radiator and mix with the antifreeze and the antifreeze can get into the transmission and ruin it. There are U-tube videos on this and it is called the dreaded strawberry milkshake.

Let’s be honest to ourself, the TrailHunter is a beast of an overlanding rig but most of our trip can be fulfilled with the PreRunner.
@RedondoBeach2
@RedondoBeach2 Жыл бұрын
Let's be more honest. Back seats on all other Tacoma trim levels has always been a terrible idea. No leg room, cramped, adds weight to the truck & reduces engine performance, reduces MGP, diminishes towing/load capacity. Rear seats in a Tacoma are worse than useless. They're costly in many ways. In 2025 I'd like to see a TRD Offroad Xtracab and TRD Pro Xtracab.

I would have preferred that they kept the access cab with the storage options for the prerunners as it was a utility. I have a nissan d21 extened cab and it is a pain in the ass to reach over for stuff in the back. The access cab was a godsent idea for utility as it was easy to get stuff in the back. Even the guys in the video struggled to reach over. If you wanted to carry people in the back then get a crew cab as that is what it was made for. Keep the access cab for utility.

Is it me or did Nissan come out with the new Frontier a little to early? That thing is now kicked back a decade in tech and styling after these new trucks, Tacoma, Colorado, and Ranger just got released. Should of waited. New Tacoma is a beast. Power will be welcomed. I owned a 16 4x4 OR auto and a 19 manual. The 3.5 was a pig.

Everyone else...Molle Panel. What does Toyota do on the Pre-Runner? Peg Board! I can't even keep the hooks from falling out from my peg board mounted on my garage wall.

TRD Offroad was done dirty imo. It's like Toyota didn't want to exhibit it. Almost immediately, those bilstein monotubes will need to be replaced. They will be the same quality as the 3rd gen. I had to replace them twice until I upgraded because they leak very easy. The new Tundra came with the same type of suspension (for the trim). I get it, buy the truck upgrade how you want. If you plan on getting the trim. I would have the upgrade ready immediately and wait a year so aftermarket can catch up.

Might be a lot cheaper to get the Offroad and upgrade to OM. EMU shocks. If you want to match the Trailhunter lift it should be easy along with the stronger plates, wouldn't be surprised to see a dealer installed TRD parts. Still should end up being SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper vs the Pro and THunter.

@sunavamatata yes all I'm saying is do it immediately. Don't bother keeping the stock shocks on the TRD offroad, They will let you down. So have money ready for that Fox, Icon or Kings that's if those companies are ready year one..

But why didn't they make it so the rear window could roll all the way down like the 4runner, Sequoia and some Tundra's?

The prerunner is the perfect work truck/weekend desert runner. Casual off-roaders/overlanders may go for the Trailhunter, but it's an esoteric market. Serious overlanders will find that they can build a TRD Sport into a Trailhunter caliber vehicle with better components for less money.

If you were to add an aftermarket front locker to the trailhunter, would that void the entire warranty? Would there be any way of adding a front locker without voiding the warranty if so?

I am a Toyota guy big time I currently own a 2023 40th 4Runner ,but I gotta tell ya I think the new GMC Canyon is a little nicer looking and I do not like the fact in the upscale tacoma you must purchase it with a Hybrid power plant only and long term approximately 12 years or so you will have to purchase a new expensive battery

In February, my local Toyota dealer told me I had to wait to get the Pro hybrid Tundra (which I thought was a little ugly anyway) (I guess they weren't making any more for 2023? And the fact they dropped the V-8) so I wound up getting a Tremor this time around. I still have my old Taco, but I've been floored by the 19-20 mpg (calculated, not just looking at the dash meter) I'm getting in the 5.0 Tremor. If I drive in sport mode it is around 17, unless I'm just being stupid. That is still better than I've had in a non-diesel truck for a while. I was going to supercharge it with the Ford-approved Whipple, but I am having second thoughts. That Taco looks pretty nice, and it has more torque than my 5.0. I don't tow much though, so no regrets unless the Ford starts breaking down. Peace, Love!!

I don't think so. Not like Ford where every option is available so what's on the lot could be anything. Toyota limits options on the different versions so an SR5 will have limited options, and the Limited also will very few options to add. Therefore, two vehicles of the same badge will be likely equipped.

Toyota needs to redesign it so that it has an access cab instead of a xtra cab. It is annoying having to reach over the seat just to get stuff like the dude who just asked for help for something he could not reach. Also redesign it so that the leaves are over the axel instead of under it. Under axel leaves reduces ground clearance and also restricts lift options. I would instantly trade in my 07 prerunner for the 24 prerunner if those features were added, but it seems like I will be skipping 4th gen. Hoping a Gen 4.5 or Gen 5 will see the return of the access cab with the storage options. Will probably go with the frontier if I need to.

I'm thinking auto start stop won't be kind to a turbo charger. I've heard before that if you install one of those receiver hitch lights the auto start stop will stay off since it tricks the rig into thinking that it's towing. I don't know if it's true though. I will be turning it off every time and saving my turbo at the expense of a few cents worth of gasoline.
