Hey guys! Today I am sharing with you some tips on how to find the perfect neutral eyeshadow palette. Picking out the right neutral tones can be tricky- some shades are gray and dull, others can pull too warm and orange. But I am going to show you some of my favorite neutral palettes and share with you where they fall on my self-created neutral scale, along with swatches and tips! I hope you find it helpful! Thanks so much for watching!

I wish every creator did this! I’m a cool tuned girl. When reviewing them , maybe stating it’s a warm or cool tones would be a big help to us viewers. Or maybe help us understand how to see cool or warm tones in a palette. I always have this issue. Now it’s makeup and if u wanna have fun, totally have fun, but when ur trying to make something stand out understanding the tones to me anyways is so much easier.

@@annadominguez9897Yess! And that's ALL of them. There are literally no light neutral shimmers that are actually cool-toned anywhere. Same goes for light mattes but you can at least find some mid-toned ones you can apply lightly and it can work. But it's incredibly frustrating to see palettes being called cool-toned and not being able to create one full look with them that is actually that. Cool undertones in neutrals are not a fad, we need them specifically for them to look "neutral" on us. If it shows up yellow on me, then it's not a cool-toned neutral.

OMG - thank you so much for talking about the elephant in the room! I have a slightly cool undertone and consistently when someone says a palette is cool-toned, I get it and it’s too warm for me. Going Coconuts is one where influencers said “it’s cool-toned neutral,” but on me, it’s just warm. You are spot on about lighting and the reviewer’s undertone, and I would so appreciate if reviewers did a ranking of where on the cool to warm spectrum a palette falls. Soooo helpful! Thank you again for your great content!

Love your videos and using a scale makes my marketing researcher’s heart flutter. Suggestion, if you don’t mind: make your scale a 9 point, so you have a true middle (5). In your notes, put the number before your links so if one listens, they know what those numbers mean, but wouldn’t otherwise; this will allow me to come back and quickly find what I was looking for. And just rate using whole numbers. (I know, I’m guilty of wanting to go in the middle at times too, but it always makes me feel that I haven’t used the right scale.) If you continue with scales, can you also do one for level of shimmer/glitter to matte? This is a critical factor for me in deciding what to purchase (I lean more matte, but do love a good shimmer at times.) Thanks so very much! And I hope you know I was trying to help, not being critical.

Just a recommendation but keep a matte palette of bright but deep hues of red, blue, yellow, orange etc. You can use very small amounts of these to cool/warm the tone of any other color. For example if you have a brown that's just a little too warm you can add very small amounts of dark blue and it will create a cooler brown color. You can also use white and black shades to change the depth of a color. It may take a little more time and some practice but you can create any color you like using your favorite formulas
@tomjones2157
@tomjones2157 2 ай бұрын
@tinahickman6300 Doesn't work for spring skintone (bright, warm, light). Spring doesn't like any black or white or dark shades as this mutes down the color depth and makes everything look like grey mud. We want to remove the greige not add to it or warm it up.

As a cool toned girl I was actually surprised that you didn't rank the Soft Glam even higher on the warmth scale. It's always been raved about as the ideal neutral palette, and that probably what made me get it, but I struggled with it every single time I tried to use it until it made me actively hate it. No one buys a 14 shadow palette for a transition shade, a deep brown and a black, and other than that there isn't much there to create a full neutral eye look

I definitely prefer eyeshadows in the 5-7 range. I’ve made SO many mistakes purchasing palettes that are too too warm or too cool. It’s just amazing how a neutral shadow can bring liveliness to your skin or deadness. The super warm, orange or yellow shades just look tragic on me like the ones with too much gray.
@stacyechelberger
@stacyechelberger Жыл бұрын
Natasha Denona glam and persona identity are both waaaaay too warm toned on my cool toned skin. Natasha is actually about a 6-7 for me. It actually gets more straight up orange the longer I have it on. It almost oxidizes. No matter if I use a primer or not. The persona mattes are completely unusable on cool skin. They’re more of an 8 for me. A lot of times, these “cool toned palettes have some wearable shimmers but then they skew the mattes more neutral/warm than the shimmers. It’s so frustrating! I always have a companion palette of very grey toned brown matte shades to use with any other palettes. Grey toned browns look neutral on my pink/grey skin. Strangely enough, that’s taupe is much more wearable on my skin than ND glam.

I love this idea! Everyone reviewing neutral palettes needs to refer to your scale! Although as a cool toned gal I think your whole scale leans a bit warm. My favourite neutrals are rare to find - pink toned grays! Grays with zero blue tones in them. ND has too much yellow in her "neutral" eyeshadows for me, even if the shades don't lean warm, the yellow makes them look off if I'm not careful.

Good topic to talk about Mandy! I will give perspective from someone with a warm-ish olive GREEN 💚 undertone. My beige's and brown's have to be very warm. Even when they say they are neutral, they all pull gray on my eyelids. From drugstore to high-end. I look horrible in gray , zombie or sick looking lol. The joys of being green 💚. Let's not even talk about foundation shades.

@@lauraswensgard3703 it depends if you are cool, neutral, or warm olive green. I lean warm and look good in fall harvest colors. But most Influencers on here ... So many fake tan and you can't even tell. Hanna Louise Posten is a very light green, idk I think she is more neutral? There is a KZbinr on here that has some good info , Merriam styles. There are others on here ... That don't know what they are talking about also, watch out. NYX soft matte lip cream in Rome , and ELF lip gloss in black cherry are some newer lippies to me that I love. Reds I hate , except brick reds, aka brown reds. Maroon or burgundy, only neutral ones , or ones with a brown undertone. Even some berries , but not pink or purple. Neutral ones or ... Brownish berries. I am a fall season , but the more tan I get I look more yellow. The tan hides the green. Then I can wear some spring colors. I gave up on foundation years ago. I use concealer blended out well and some powder foundation on occasion. I would rather my own skin show though. Then everything pull , pink, yellow, or ashy on me.

The thing that people do not understand, is that there is no such thing as neutral. As soon as you put warmth in to a cool color, it becomes a warm tone. This is not the same for a warm tone when you put cool into it. Cool is cool all alone and warm makes everything warm. The warm family has its own nudes which maybe some would call them neutrals. Cools have their own nudes but they are only cool toned. And I confess, I am old schoool. If you are a warm season, you are to wear warm tones from soup to nuts make up wise. NO COOL. Cool outdates a warm season. The same for a cool season, they should remain in their family of cool tones and if they add warmth, they will add years to themselves and they will look dated as well.

I have the Alter Ego Shadow Kiss palette which is the alternative palette to the Natasha Denona glam palette. I love it and use it quite often! I definitely lean more neutral-cool in my preferences. I don't mind the occasional warmer look and I have been known to mix cool and warm tones together as well (I know what a total faux pas!). I also have the Alter Ego Harmony palette which is the alternative to the Natasha Denona Retro Palette. Alter Ego isn't quite as pigmented as the ND shadows, but for the amount of money I'm saving ($17 vs $69), I'm not going to complain about having to blend in an extra layer of shadow!

Anyway, I had to learn how to paint a 3-D canvas that is skin not canvas material, but color theory never changes. The Natasha Denona Glam palette is my GO-TO neutral palette. It’s really versatile. There ARE some ‘holes’ though that I’ve filled in with singles. Soft Glam is MUCH too WARM. Neutrals ARE a challenge. Colourpop’s That’s Taupe is COOLER than Glam but VERY GREY. Maybe TOO GREY. The highlighter Flexitarian is a pinky silver that’s a amazing lid or inner corner highlight. Kush is a cool beige that’s beautiful. Both are the Supershock formula. Sephora Collection has some lovely singles. At $10 NOT cheap but some good formulas and shades. I just bought Chestnut(dark neutral matte brown) and Chock Shock, a SMOOth metallic in a neutral to cool undertone. I want to get a dark matte grey. The eye crayons, SPECIFICALLY the one in Grey is actually a cool silver grey.

This is fun! On my skin tone, the ND glam pulls so cool. I can get a neutral look that I like, but most shades look so grey and dull on my skin tone. The ND bronze and the ND zendo I love in the summer. They are both so warm. I love them in summer, but in the winter when I’m more fair it’s not as flattering on me. The ND My Dream palette, however, is perfect for me all year! It’s neutral enough for me in the winter, and it can pull warm in the summer. It is the most perfect year round neutral palette that I have. And it’s got a little color. Hands down my most favorite ND palette.

I find this type of discussion about neutral palettes very interesting and it's good idea to make a video about. For example as someone who has fair skin that leans to having a rosy cool undertone it usually means that neutral palettes that suite me are those palettes that are either very in the middle of cool and warm axis or almost bit mauve leaning. A too warm toned orange bronzy palette will look bit off on me, just as anything too close to silver/ grey cool tones will make me look just very ill. Since the neutral palette has been done so many times and we have so many in the market, I would really appreciate that in the reviews there would also be a focus on to which type of preferences in terms on undertones the palette falls into, aside from evaluating the formula and textures in the individual palettes.

Also Diamond District has only one shimmer, but it's a real interesting taupe, almost a creamy formula. And there's a very different teal blue in there with a berry-purple. Nice chatting with you!

This is so useful! Would love to see you rank Sigma Ambience, Moira Endless Moonlight, and u know it’s old, but Hanging in Hawaii is still my favorite neutral. I always travel with Feeling Bubbly and CP charm school. Glad you talk about it, no one does!

An even cheaper and easier to process alternative to ND “Glam” is the new 5 pan/6 color palette from Essence “Don’t Worry Be”. It lacks a bronze, but other than that it can pull off the majority of looks you can do with “Glam” for under $5.

Loved this video format!!. I have olive skin tone and only like warm palettes and this was soo helpful. It took me a long time before I realized that cool eyeshadow palettes don't work on me even thou I love the colors but not for me . Warm colors looks best. This is one of the best videos that was most helpful for me. Thanks.

There have been quite a few times I disagreed with palettes or colors being described as warm neutral. Since when is straight up orange, red & yellow considered a neutral(even if they are slightly muted)? I think it's difficult to judge a color without comparing it to another color or swatching it on your skin. Colors can look very different on diferent skintones or when surrounded by other colors in a palette. That's why a contrasting, complementary color is often added into a palette (blue & orange/terracotta, purple & yellow/gold, green & red/pink) It will catch your eye more than a purely analagous color story will (all blue/green or orange toned browns for instance) My sweet spot is a neutral palette with warm & cool shades & a definite Light/Med/Deep shade range of mattes with shimmers being light or midtoned.

I wish I would have found this before I bought my pally. I bought the Urban Decay Naked. I’m thinking that I lean more towards warm tones and my eye color is green/blue. Gosh it’s hard to tell. I’m 64, does it really matter 🤔😁 Thank you for this video!

Hi. Ok, so my question is, if I’m a neutral in foundation, can I wear both cool and warm eyeshadows.. some look too Orange so should I stay away from warm tones. I’m just having trouble figuring out warm and cool on me! I still haven’t found a foundation that actually is my color! I’d say I’m light-medium. Also I’m a newbie with make up! In learning process!! Thank you for this video. So many questions! Thanks! You’re awesome!!

I have watched, liked and commented on many, many of your videos. I just realized last week I wasn't subscribed and did that quickly. Please do a video on cool toned palettes, especially from Colourpop or more affordable options. I love the Natasha Denona palettes but, cannot pay that. I know you mentioned the Of Quartz palette and I will give that one a try on my next palette. Thank you for all your videos. I'm about the same complexion as you but, I am definitely cool toned.

This was great. Thanks for creating a great scale. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Natasha I need a nude and color pops stone cold fox. I’ve looked at them several times but haven’t bought either yet. Also can you recommend a cool toned pallet from Sydney Grace? Thanks again for going the extra mile. I love this format ❤️

What a great video concept. Have not seen anything done ever in a video Me Mandy. I'm a cool complexion so this helped me immensely. Thanks 🙏 for helping me understand this a bit better because truthfully I don't have the eye to know the difference. Your's did the trick. You do a great job. Keep them coming.

I think this scale is a good start, but cool/warm is only one aspect of undertone. Undertones are also affected by the strength of yellow, red, and blue coloring so that we have undertones like neutral, pink, golden, yellow, cool olive, warm olive, and blue (not sure if this = cool olive tho) undertones. The cool/warm scale in this vid seems to measure cool/warm along a grey to orange scale. Orange = red+yellow, but yellow has less red. I have a yellow undertone, so I am very warm, but most warm palettes just amp up orange saturation to become more warm in their books, but these will look more red-orange on a yellow undertone. Most "neutral" palettes make me look dull bc they're cool in an unflattering undertone and bc "neutral", "cool", and "warm" are relative terms. Someone extremely cool toned will often find even most cool toned palettes too warm. Taking into account my yellow undertone, my neutral colors are peaches, yellows, and a little bit of coral (but not pink). Based on this grey-orange scale, even if the warmth level was chosen correctly, most palettes (drugstore or luxury) would either be too cool-brown or too pink. The color aspect of undertone also affects how colorful shadows look on u. It took me a while to fig out my colors, but I found that yellows and peaches look the most natural on me. And u would think only warm colors would look good on me colorwise, but it flips w blues and purples. Warm blue (teals) turn green on me, but cool blues and dark navy look great and make my brown eyes pop. I can wear warm and neutral greens, but cool greens make me look dead unless paired w a color that helps it. Warm purples (red leaning purples and magentas) look like bruises on me, but cool purples (lavenders and dark eggplants) look really good on me.

Lovely. I am a Nars Yukon. Very pale pink. The ND glam is great and Tarlette is fine because I have brown eyes. Almost all palates are too warm. Could you help out us pinkies? Finding cool palates is hard, paying $$$ and only use a few shades. Thx. Love your channel.

Another great neutral palette… that’s also quite affordable!!! is the mini Wishing You palette from the Sephora Collection. (It’s no longer showing online, but you may still find some, in store.) It was $8 and I bought several as Christmas gifts, during the last sale. They’re well loved, by me and the people I got them for. 😊

I love that you are going to use the cool to warm meter going forward. What a wonderful idea! I love those beautiful warm looks on you! Unfortunately, they just don’t look good on me. I tend to lean more towards the cool toned and neutral pallets. Great video! Thank you! 😃

I finally realized that warm tones don't work for me when I bought ND mini nude palette! I'm still hoping that I'll find a bronze or a warm champagne shade that looks good on me but I don't think that will happen. Great video as always!!!

Can we just start with understanding- what is a neutral color? They’re being discussed as warm or cool. That’s not neutral in my mind. You remind me of a high school teacher I had once. She confused me the whole semester. Years later It dawned on me I got advanced degrees & license in that field. Maybe photos of model wearing the eyeshadow with a declaration of what the models’ skin tone is? I dunno. Neutrals can be warm or cool😜. What does neutral mean.😞. You did do a fine video though for folk that are already knowledgeable.

I love this! Thank you!!! Have you ever used the Smashbox Minimalist Palette?? It is my favorite nude palette and it looks so great on my neutral olive tan skin tone. I just can’t tell you why. However it’s so small I wanted something along the same neutral range but for the life of me I don’t know where it is on the scale and what else is comparable. I am like you that if I go too cool, it is not flattering. 😅

I bought the empowered palette yesterday it’s my first palette I’m really excited for it to arrive 😊 I’m a beginner and need to buy brushes ugh no idea what to get but I have some fluffy eye brushes. I usually used my bronzer as it’s was orangey warm toned as an eyeshadow and loved it. Or my darker contour shade to smoke it out :) I want the abh soft glam next. Or anything warm orangey etc as I don’t like too cool toned
