My husband and I were senior citizens when we married. He was a 67 year old bachelor, I had been single for 14 years. I had children and grandchildren, he didn't. At his idea, we keep our money separate, we set up a third account and each one of us puts money into it each month for household expenses. If it is a big ticket item like carpet we discuss what we want to do. That way if I want to spend money on grandchildren, or fabric, or he wants to spend money on wood we don't have to ask permission. I do tell him if I am spending a lot of money on something, to me it is a courtesy. He is welcome to look at my books and I am welcome to look at his books.

In the end, it is all about having your own life. Whether you are married or single. I don't agree with a relationship based on money only that is not the right way. But sadly people are trapped in this money based relationship and as a result, lose them integrity. A relationship should be built/based on love, respect, knowledge, and admiration for each other. It only makes sense that if you are married both parties should bring what they have to the table, take care of the important stuff first then we both get an allowance. It’s really not that hard to understand or except.... and if you can’t except that simple remedy then your spouse may want to rethink staying married to you 😒 because that only shows how selfish you are.

I really think it depends where you are in life as a couple that influences how the money is split. Early in the relationship you might want to have what's yours. When we bought our house I decided that I really didn't feel well knowing my gf had less money than me. So we did just what Steve advocates. We pooled the money, some went to bills, some for saving to travel which we do a lot. But most importantly was that we both had equal amount to spend on ourself. When buying the house I put in a lot more but now with kids I don't really care. If we ever would split and she takes half I'll know it will be used for our kids. She's a great with or without me :).

Percentage is the key. What ever the percentage of the mutual living expenses is to the total of both incomes, then that's how much they should each put into the joint account. If mutual living expenses is $3,000 and both incomes add to $5,000, then each has to give 60% of their income to the joint account to pay the common bills. They're not married. There's no legal protection (conjugal property). That aint safe. But i get steve. My husband and I have 3 accounts. Savings, his and mine. We pay utilities in cash. We put equal amounts of money in our savings account but at times I earn more so I put in more than what we initially agreed on. He does the same when he gets extra money. Then when someone is short on cash, we give the other extra. We make joint decisions on making purchases involving our savings account. But whatever we get, we dont feel compelled to say to each other in detail. He just finds out I get bonuses when I put in more money in our savings but we are both open on divulging the amount if asked. I never felt I had to keep a secret on how much I get and he's the same. Marriage is a partnership. It's different with each couple but our system works for us. However, I would never share a bank account with anyone Im not married with. I like the fact that we are legally binded with each other. To each is own though.

For a married couple married forever... wondering about joint savings and investment accounts the minute you decide to separate and walk out? Any way to freeze and get arbitration before you leave the house and split it up then and then let the courts do the exact math later? Just feel the minute it goes south the transferring and spending will be unprecedented. Also what if she argues she needs to continues to take care of adult children?
