My boyfriend and I (together for 6 years) made a joint (savings) account so we can put down for a house when we get married. We’re engaged now but it’s good to start early if you guys both agree on the path you’re going. Now when we get married we have some money to start our lives. Edit: I refuse to call him fiancé so don’t mind the use of boyfriend. I usually refer to him as either boyfriend/husband. Something about the word fiancé I just do not like 😂

I did a joint account with my boyfriend, now he's my husband. It was a small account for date night like a couple dollars($20 or $30) from our checks and we could do dinner and a movie kinda thing. Nothing more. We were already discussing marriage and planning for the future though. Got engaged not long after. But I wouldn't suggest it if you've never discussed future engagement or marriage though. I completely agree with Steve on this one.

Joint accounts are for married people. Separate accounts are for “single-minded” people. If I need to have money to myself so that my wife doesn’t say anything to me about spending money, I married the wrong person. I hear what Steve and the ladies are saying, because they’ve been scarred. Everybody’s situation is different. What ever works for your marriage, go with it.

My husband and I were senior citizens when we married. He was a 67 year old bachelor, I had been single for 14 years. I had children and grandchildren, he didn't. At his idea, we keep our money separate, we set up a third account and each one of us puts money into it each month for household expenses. If it is a big ticket item like carpet we discuss what we want to do. That way if I want to spend money on grandchildren, or fabric, or he wants to spend money on wood we don't have to ask permission. I do tell him if I am spending a lot of money on something, to me it is a courtesy. He is welcome to look at my books and I am welcome to look at his books.

Agree with Steve... no secrets, money that goes into the joint chequing and savings account either pro-rata as per earnings, or put the entirety in the chequing account and siphon out a predetermined amount into individual accounts. According to Dave Ramsey, divide savings into 2 or 3, an easily liquidatable instrument for emergencies, and a long term high yield investment for children's college, retirement etc.

In the end, it is all about having your own life. Whether you are married or single. I don't agree with a relationship based on money only that is not the right way. But sadly people are trapped in this money based relationship and as a result, lose them integrity. A relationship should be built/based on love, respect, knowledge, and admiration for each other. It is high time to set the clock right for a quality life.

Before my husband and I got married at age 23, we agreed on having the 4 bank acct rule and that was without an accountants advice. It only makes sense that if you are married both parties should bring what they have to the table, take care of the important stuff first then we both get an allowance. It’s really not that hard to understand or except.... and if you can’t except that simple remedy then your spouse may want to rethink staying married to you 😒 because that only shows how selfish you are.

I really think it depends where you are in life as a couple that influences how the money is split. Early in the relationship you might want to have what's yours. When we bought our house I decided that I really didn't feel well knowing my gf had less money than me. So we did just what Steve advocates. We pooled the money, some went to bills, some for saving to travel which we do a lot. But most importantly was that we both had equal amount to spend on ourself. When buying the house I put in a lot more but now with kids I don't really care. If we ever would split and she takes half I'll know it will be used for our kids. She's a great with or without me :).

Percentage is the key. What ever the percentage of the mutual living expenses is to the total of both incomes, then that's how much they should each put into the joint account. If mutual living expenses is $3,000 and both incomes add to $5,000, then each has to give 60% of their income to the joint account to pay the common bills. They each keep 40% of their paychecks for themselves.

They're not married. There's no legal protection (conjugal property). That aint safe. But i get steve. My husband and I have 3 accounts. Savings, his and mine. We pay utilities in cash. We put equal amounts of money in our savings account but at times I earn more so I put in more than what we initially agreed on. He does the same when he gets extra money. Then when someone is short on cash, we give the other extra. We make joint decisions on making purchases involving our savings account. But whatever we get, we dont feel compelled to say to each other in detail. He just finds out I get bonuses when I put in more money in our savings but we are both open on divulging the amount if asked. I never felt I had to keep a secret on how much I get and he's the same. Marriage is a partnership. It's different with each couple but our system works for us. However, I would never share a bank account with anyone Im not married with. I like the fact that we are legally binded with each other. To each is own though.

What I find funny about this is that they are all for splitting the money and everything until they start making more money than they don't want to split it. I love women, hell I'm even married one. But I think it is absolutely hilarious every time you get to that point where they can either be honest or they can be a hypocrite and they almost always choose to be a hypocrite when it comes to money. Is that a man should share things with his wife, unless it's money then she should get more.

People put EVERYTHING before marriage. Why in the hell would you want a joint account with a man not your husband. Stop already.

So many people on here upset that she has a joint account when they're not married...why does that matter? Most serious long term couples have joint accounts before marriage...its called convenience and intelligence. I love how if the man is making more than he should pay for more...but if the women is making more then nah its 50/50...ahah WTF

Bet you if he reversed the question and asked if they'd split 50/50 if the man made more then them, the answer would be unequivocally, YES!!

I like this idea. It what I don’t like is that if the tables are flipped and the name makes more then he would be obligated to split half

They started off wrong(which i already knew) they needed to ask these questions first(is it her money and does he put all of his money in the joint account) if he puts all of his money in the joint account she is completely wrong not for making a separate account but for not telling him.

Is there such a thing as a savings account that takes two signatures to move it? For a married couple married forever... wondering about joint savings and investment accounts the minute you decide to separate and walk out? Any way to freeze and get arbitration before you leave the house and split it up then and then let the courts do the exact math later? Just feel the minute it goes south the transferring and spending will be unprecedented. Also what if she argues she needs to continues to take care of adult children? Also what about inheritance from one side that came in before the separation?

This is why relationships don't work...women. they've become not just independent but also much more selfish. A marriage is a union, a partnership. There's no one individual, therefore no room for selfishness

Always have your OWN Bank account. Trusting is great... Not trusting is Greater. Have a second one with your Partner that you put only a small part of your earnings. Keep your INDEPENDENTS. Plus. You don't have JOINT bank accounts with your BOYFRIEND!! Only with your SPOUSE!
