Dude I traded my 2017 GMC Canyon which only had 15,000 miles in April for a 2020 RAM 1500 Laramie Sport Edition. They tried to give me $22,000 but I said no way and they finally offered $26,000 which was blue book for a trade in. I even detailed it myself for 4 hours before they came out. The deal was done all over the phone and they came out and delivered the RAM. Didn't care about the Canyon and drove it away from my house without even doing a walk around. The Truck was very clean so I guess it didn't matter. This was during the height of the Pandemic so I think they were really desperate for a sale in April. Also if you know what the trade in value is for your car then they really can't low ball. Of course the dealership told me they were super busy but they weren't. Desperate dealers don't care and just want to do the deal. I ended up with a great deal on the RAM. Funny back story. I was able to track the gmc online as they listed it for $34,000. They ended up making it a pre-owned certified truck. They ended up dropping the price to $28,000 after a couple of months so they basically made nothing on the trade in. I believe it sold after that because I couldn't fine it anymore.

It is better to sell your car to another person than trade it in to the dealership

Youll probably get more if you sell it to a person but then you need to rent a car for a few days and lose any tax advantaves that come with trading in at time of purchase so the answer is "it depends". It depends on the numbers. Make a spreadsheet.
