It's so Microshaft can charge you £180 to get it fixed., Same with Sony. Mine was just under 2 years old and was hardly used, I didn't disassemble it but threw up similar error when I googled it, it said was a bad SSD, so sent to Microsoft who fixed it and cost me 180 pound. Honestly be lucky if it had 3 months of use, it just sat most of the time upstairs next to my TV, was in standby mode though so technically could have been powered on although all auto updates were off cos everytime I did start it, it wanted updates and game patches. Smacks to me of planned obsolescence Tbh.

The heavy security on the nvme's is to stop people upgrading them to larger ones and forcing you to buy the overpriced external drives. More and more older games are mysteiously converting to 'series x' games, with no graphic/gameplay updates, just a different thumbnail and forcing it to only play on the nvme and not a regular external HDD, pushing you over time to buy the expensive external nvme.

Sony has been getting flak over proprietary PSVita memory cards but even starting from the OG XBox, their internal storage also requires "proprietary firmware" drives which cannot be easily replaced with standard of-the-shelf PC drives without modding.

And moving games from external to internal multiple times to play games has its problems it can only do that so many times before the SSD will fail as it has a write limit before the SSD cant do it anymore and it more prone to this then HDD are. So doing it the normal way is killing it slowly as i don't know what the write limit is on Xbox SSD but can bet it is not as good as the normal ones people can buy for PC.

If the key is changing, it should be stored on the security chip. It doesn't matter unless you wanted to recover the data from a dead board. If all you want is to put in a new drive, there is no hw issue. MS just doesn't allow it.

Perhaps it's time our friends over in the US started some kind of class action lawsuit over these failing SSD's. There's no way that the SSD's in these consoles should be failing at the rate they are. Which means either 1) They used a bad SSD or 2) The console software is killing these SSD's at a far higher rate than it should be. Either way this is a problem which Microsoft created by the design path they went down with these consoles!

The difference with a pc ssd is that here people install and delete tons of games with gamepass all the time, thats why they fail, the problem is not that the ssd fails the problem is that some data its married to the motherboard and most of the times the drive is imposible to replace. The only thing they could do is improve the cooling and reduce its speed, that way theh could last a bit longer, but they will die anyway.

The US does not give a single flying fudge about consumer protections. It's all corporations all the way over here in this hellhole. 2. All console manufacturers have in their terms of service/use that you're not allowed to sue, you have to go to arbitration. 3. Even if you could sue or were willing to try and have that part of the contract invalidated in court, good luck having the time and money to take on freaking Microsoft in a court of law.

I preordered a Series X and got it day one. Used it for 3-4 hours a week for about 11 months and then it died on me, wouldn't turn on, totally dead so I sold it for parts on ebay. It was never moved, bumped or anything and it died on me with very light use. I won't be buying another Xbox.

Consoles are so weird..... I know some people with Series X, PS5, they clean them..... Look after them, don't use them to frequently, yet they just die. And other pals that carry their consoles around to other mates houses, haven't cleaned them once, use them most days for hours on end and they are still alive and kicking with no issues at all.

I haven't watched the full video yet so sorry if i miss something. I've watched a couple other vids on this subject and i think i understand the majority of the issue, that being Microsoft pairs the Xbox series X(maby S too but idk) with a key code in a script or something in one of the partitions of the internal SSD and on top of that Microsoft so far changes the keycode of sorts every Update, and currently their is no known way to pair a new SSD when the original SSD dies. With that said, for repairists who resell one or more Xbox Series Xs and Ss should we default to changing the original SSD (if it still works ) via cloneing the partition or whole drive to a new and higher expected reliability NVME SSD? I think we shouldn't have to resort to doing this and Xbox is really making a problem that shouldn't exist but this particular SSD in this video starting to die at 7000 hours doesn't sound like a good lifespan when i relate to my old Samsung evo drive in my old pc that has like 16,000 or more Hours put on on it as my main use Drive and it still hasn't failed last i checked on CrystalDiskInfo. I don't know if i even feel truely comfortable getting a Xbox Series X with ought a SSD swap already done if i ,as many people, don't have the luxury of having the know-how to get down to the SSD, Clone the SSD, and never be able to long term reliably use the original SSD in a Series X thanks to the key being reset every Update.

If Phil is right then cloning is no longer possible because after cloning the disk the system fails with code E200. If this is true and I haven't tried it, it is possible that the life of the console is only as long as the life of the disk....

I'm speculating that they might've kept a unique coded copy of the keys, such as SSD serial number, of which they generate a new key from after every update so the system keeps a matching key and why a clone worked the first time but would fail again after any update since the resulting new generated key would be from a different serial number would mismatch that of one calculated based on the original Something like that I'm assuming

Yeah if the XBOX checks BOTH the SSD's serial number and its encrypted partition you are xcrewed, since you can clone the partition but not the hardware's serial number. You would need a hardware mod for that which injects the old serial number. In fact I'm surprised that doesn't check the serial number right away and doesn't allow other SSD even to boot or install updates.

If you start to apply update the sequence number and boot slot changeing in NOR and in SSD boot partition. From this point you can not use ssd with old boot partition.

Interesting that they are not repairable once the SSD fails. It’s probably so you send the console back to Microsoft for repair, but still odd. I had issues with the Xbox One S, constantly replacing optical drives. Ironically, I still have a functioning Xbox 360. Not to mention an NES and Sega Genesis (with the Sega CD and 32X adapter). So planned obsolescence is a newer thing. I used to have an Atari 2600 console too, but it got lost in one of the moves in the 90s. It’s amazing that 30 year old consoles still function properly.

I still have a working NES. It’s rarely played because graphics on the new machines are far superior, but it still works.

Planned obsolescence isn't the issue here, it's piracy. These are steps console manufacturers feel they need to take in the 24/7 current real time HD social media/IT culture we live in to secure revenue from game sales. They didn't have the huge potential of mass piracy bitd. It was there, but on a much smaller level. They are sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place tbf. What's funny though is that this level of security can't exist on PC architecture for obvious reasons and yet they seem to survive ok from the evils of piracy. Maybe they should be looking at how the PC market manages to do it. Nonetheless this SSD issue taking down a perfectly good console with no other option but to send it to Microsoft for repair isn't acceptable imho. Ironically I'm sure this will only go on to encourage hardware hackers.

@@anthonydenn4345 it’s funny, because recently (I don’t know how recently) they took away the ability to run X/S games on external hard drives. They must be on the internal SSD or an external memory card. If they really want to remain competitive, make the memory easily expandable. That’s why my kids are PC gamers nearly exclusively. Piracy does seem to be a huge problem worldwide, but having parts available to reputable repair companies shouldn’t be an issue.

No its probably something simpler like they are using the manufacturers SSD serial number and if it does not match the original then the update fails

The way that it works is that there is a small partition saved on the drive that stores the keys required to boot the console. These keys are generated every time that there is an update to the console and the old ones are cleared. If you wanted to replace the drive you would need to clone that partition. Unfortunately you cant just back up this partition because the keys change every update. This is something that xbox could easily fox in a software update but likely won't.

if they havent done anything to stop the process, id say if someone made a dual hard drive cloning tool that actually plugs into the xbox's normal hard drive slot, picture a bunk bed type cloner original hard drive on bottom and cloned one on top. with a wire that runs out to the side of the xbox witha button. after each update you hold the button and wait for a light to blink on the button. once it starts, its cloning. after the clone is done. it goes from blinking to solid. then hold button again to shut off. ofcourse you would need a way to get power to it while xbox is off. that would maybe require another cable with a usb plug to come out to the xbox somewhere so you can get some power to it. this way it doesnt need to be took apart each time you need to do a clone.

These type of hacks are probably what's coming down the line sooner or later. Maybe what you could do is have a cloned SSD on the inside of the console that JUST gets updated at the same time the onboard SSD does. Not been seen or used by the console for storage etc at all!

Seems overly complicated. You'd never be able to do a repair like this without dismantling it. BUT you could just simply get a single to double NVMe adapter configured for RAID 1, put the original SSD in one slot and a spare in the second and then update the console and you'd have a working spare drive always. Issue is you'd have to constantly dismantle the console every time you update & you'd never be able to use Instant On as it'd update without you knowing. The simplest and only fix that we need is MS releasing an update that removes the dependency of that 1st partition and whatever is in there, the same way Xbox Ones are setup. Then they'd be easily replaceable.

I bought one with an E200 error. Cloned the partition to a known good SSD and got near to where yours was on 'Applying' and then it restarted with an E109 error which isn't even on the MS website. After that every attempt to install the update got to the end of 'Downloading' restarted and immediately gave the E109 error again. So yeah, either there was a more serious issue with the console or MS has changed something.

Never had a problem with any Series X or One X for that matter. Actually other than the One S, i don't recall ever having an issues with any other Xbox. Not even the 360 red ring of death. Series X is super reliable imo.

its bad that Microsoft put the 1gb encrypted partition in the SSD with paired files. making the SSD unswappable which the SSD will fail overtime and cant be now replaced because of paired files to the motherboard. that one little SSD can render the console useless. why was this put in place was this extra security because Xbox has enough security in their consoles like paired disc drive and requiring internet connection to do the initial setup that forces you to update and add a Microsoft account. or was it that Microsoft doesn't want to fix our own consoles anymore but wants us send it in to them for a high price. i find this is gonna be a major problem like the red ring of death on the Xbox 360 if Microsoft does not update the systems to make the SSD swappable. i find this an insult of Microsoft making the SSD on the Xbox series x paired to the motherboard like the og Xbox. we should have a right to repair a console by our self

Maybe the key is written at the end of the SSD so you need to clone the whole drive, or they are just triggering E200 when a different SSD Serial Number is detected. hmm which chip is the S/N kept in, probably the main SSD controller IC. Transfer it 😉

Actually looked for a comment like this. Uptime alone will not wear an SSD, only writes will. The majority of Series X users won't even get thier SSDs to 95% health over the entire life of the system.

All my SSDs except for the newest 4TB one have well over 30k hours on the clock, and written between 40 and 115TB. Wanna know how bad the SMART health on the 115TBW drive is? 96 percent. It's barely even broken in and will be useless from being too small way before it has written itself to death. His WD in the video? 14TB written. Essentially nothing. But he wants to replace it anyway for... some reason?! smh 🤦‍♂ That said, these monolithic 2230 SSDs used in the Series S and X are complete garbage, and the fact that there's both a hardware whitelist AND the secret key makes these consoles basically e-waste fresh from the factory. The life of the whole console depends on how long the low quality SSD lasts. how pathetic

This is an error with the blueray drive, had the same error when starting the xbox after the update, the system checks whether the blueray drive is there, but if it is defective, it blocks the status and the start is built a new bleuray drive then it works back to normal as if by magic i am in contact with xbox support we have tried everything new nvme offline update but only after changing the blueray drive did it work again this check will soon be thrown out in the next updates i was assured the support itself has this to several xboxes tested from different genes and about 90% of the boot errors could be fixed in this way

Heres a funny one mate ..my series x burnt out my HDMI ports lol don't use them on full 4k if using 2.0 I've been told as it is built for 2.1 in 4k mode ..use 1440p or 1080 at 120hz ..don't use HDR or Dolby on them unless your tv fully supports them in 4k at 120hz ..been honest I think 120hz is originally 60 fps and 240hz is actually 120fps

I have series x which beeps on, stays for a few seconds and than beeps off. I removed the SSD and it stays on, but nothing happens, which I guess makes sense. Do you think SSD is faulty? I was able to read and clone it in Windows. Using the cloned SSD, it beeps off same way. Also, do you need fan/BR drive connected to boot up?

Was it opened by someone else before you acquired it? If it beeps off then it sounds like the partition is a mismatch, probably has an old key that is no longer valid. If that is the case then unless you can get hold of the original partition key, it's currently not fixable.

Still prefer Microsoft consoles. Over Sony ps5, liquid metal should never be used in a console period. As for ssd issues with series x Microsoft shouldn't of stored keys on hidden partition. I made backup of my Xbox one hdd it's updated since but backup should still work

If I remember correctly swapping a original SSD from a Series X to another would work but it would pull up the restart/restore menu. Without copying or making it a clone of the same drive or you had too delete everything on the drive and it would pull up the restore screen.

so it's been a while since i started thinking about how to help with this issue and i just came up with an idea. Can moders wire up something like a raspberry pi to the traces ,vias, etc... correctly on the Series X mainboard so that the Raspberry pi is always connected to the M.2 and for what might be the hard part, Can the Rasparry pi be set to copy the script the keycode is on(or whatever have you so long as it is economically viably small in backup storage device cost) for every couple updates and perhaps delete old copies to save backup storage space So for in the case that the SSD dies repairists can copy -paste the latest script from the automated backup storage device(doesn't need to be a m.2 ssd) to basically pair a new SSD to the console?

I expect their might be problems having the Raspparry pi recognize the partition cuz if i recal correctly from a previous video that partition the pairing code is in uses a format( i think XFS) most platforms can't read and use.

Uptime not harm your ssd, only write cycles.

A lot of uptime can absolutely harm it. Slowly, over quit a long time. All electronics can fail, nothing lasts forever.

anyone got any pro tips how to get an Sandstrom HDMI cable out of the ps5 port? That cable is the worst thing i have ever tried out, the cable got like two little hooks that hooked up with my ps5 and it`s impossible to get out. So a fair warning, DO NOT USE Sandstrom HDMI in ps5 hdmi port.
