I would love to see Doug do an updated review of the Ghibli, maybe the new Trofeo variant. Maserati has massively updated the Ghibli since this video was published and most of the issues Doug had with the vehicle have been addressed. It’s still far from perfect but I think it shows that Maserati is at least listening to their customer base, unlike some of its German competitors.

I own a 2015 Ghibli SQ4 but not for long. In April, a young man who is a pillar of the community and has a promising future ran a red light driving a stolen Taurus doing 80 mph and I hit him doing about 40. The doors of the '$80,000 luxury sedan' opened as if the accident didn't happen despite the nose of the car being completely ripped off, the front axle snapped, and the front frame almost ripped off. The front of the car was the radiator flopping out. I got out uninjured. And I loved driving it, Doug. It handled well and while it wasn't the quickest, it had 400+ HP did 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. The exhaust was music. I enjoyed the interior and the ride.

A colleague has one of these. He was able to get it off the showroom floor in the middle of the silicon chip / car availability crisis (at the time, the local BMW and Audi dealers had literally NOTHING new in stock). So that was nice, if indicative of the demand level for the thing. It looks great and I do like look of the interior as long as you don’t look too closely at the quality of some of the parts. Driving it in town just looks awkward, and there is a terribly small amount of space for such a large and unwieldy car. But if you ride in it, people say “I saw you in a Maserati”.

that backup camera, including the green-yellow-red overlay, are also straight out of the 2015 Dodge parts bin. My wife's Dodge Caravan backup screen looks EXACTLY the same! Also, regarding streaming music from your phone -- my wife's Caravan won't do that either. it is only able to read MP3s from a USB stick, and import them to an internal hard drive for playback. it's like 2003 tech. HecksVision a secret to be able to maintain an awesome car while not having "fuck you money" is to have a set of arms that are not growing out of your ass (not yours in particular, just saying), so i learned changing a clutch by following a forum guide... and it turned out to be a huge success, i installed a better and more expensive part while i saved 2k in labor... and learned a lot in the process, also stopped fearing get my hands dirty, before that i was only comfortable with changing oil and break pads, now i feel like i could rebuild and engine lol

Maserati is nothing more than a brand name, they don't stand out in ANY way. For example, Porsche (German company) products are in the same price range as Maserati, agreed? Yet Porsche out performs Maserati on the track, on the road, options, tech, and in my bias opinion... appearance as well. I drove the 2007 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT, i have also driven Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes, and 1 Ferrari a few years back (a California). On top of that, i was raised around these types of cars (father and grandfather have managed dealerships for cars like these. From that experience i can say that maserati is over rated. I am not here to tell anyone what to do with their money, if they want a maserati and they can afford it, that's fine, but if they want a vehicle that demands respect and can put money where its mouth is, maserati might as well be the last high end car company i turn them towards. All that aside, my cousin had been very successful lately and last year decided to buy himself a sport car. He can me a list of cars he liked and asked my opinion saying that there were three in particular he liked the most (2017 Maserati Gran Turismo being one of them). I told him more or less what ive said here and told him to check out some reviews first. I had then recommended the 2015 Ferrari 458 from the list he game me. 3 weeks later he shows me a pic of his new car and its the Maserati. To me I have a Ghibli Q4 and 2018 Levante SQ4 and the latest Porsche MACAN TURBO for the similar price than my Levante feels inside and outside way less luxurious, (perhaps the new Cayenne will be better) handling was not as solid and planted like in my maser. By then the price will have decreased dramatically because all high end cars plummet in value as soon as they are off the lot. Hell, you want a sporty car with a ton of Italian leather, get a Fiat Spider for like half the price. Alfa Romeo is a good Italian brand brand, has both fine italian leather and a unique engine sound, and are overall slightly less expensive than Porsche or Maserati. As for engine sound, i agree with you it is "unique" but most high-end brands have "unique" engine sounds. That alone is not worth a minimum of 70k in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of the Porsche's Macan, but i would recommend the Cayenne if you are looking for an SUV. Hell, if you want Electric, Cayenne does that too, though it isn't exactly a forerunner in electric cars it is still a pretty good option. Not to knit pick, but "thousands" really isn't a lot when compared to others, the reason you see so few Maserati's on the road in contrast to Porsche isn't because of cost, since they are in the same price range, but because Porsche has been a much more recognized car brand than Maserati even among those who don't know or care much about cars (i.e. thousands MORE). This is probably one of his better videos. I've learned more in the first several minutes about the (poor) interior quality of the car with all the interchangeable parts borrowed from Chrysler than any other video he's put together. Quality and reliability are important, and that should have as much time and precedence as the bling-bling and performance factors. A lot of great insights about this car - what parts were borrowed from what horrid Chrysler model. I do know cars but I did not know these facts that Doug brought up. Great job.
