@@forrift7845 Its power without the weight. To me they sound great, but I'm used to shifting at 9,500 rpm on a rotary engine, which due to how they fire is more similar firing speed to a 2 stroke where every stroke fires so it sounds more like 19,000 rpm. That engine NA is pretty high power for fitting in a little 18" box and weighing under 250 pounds for a car engine, and they can handle an absolute thrashing (how you need to drive them actually). You can make an engine have a longer bore, but even though its larger displacement its lower power. If you take an engine and make it shorter stroke even though you loose displacement you gain power typically.

I appreciate it as a novelty but I think when people said they were interested in seeing high revving small displacement cc bikes of the early 90’s make a come back, they didn’t expect to pay full on 600cc prices for them.

It's cuz they're all actually a bunch of noobs or with a skillset of a noob tuned to needing the instant torque of a twin to operate the bike--- so many ppl ride a 600 and either get scared off by the high rpm blast past 8k or never wring it out and think it's a weak bike compared to the boring twins that give them torque starting at 2k rpm. It's contributed to the decline of the 600 platform and rise of the p-twins. I'm extremely happy to see a new I4 as I'm an I4 guy. I live for the I4 power band lol. Most riders are interested in: wheelie's and going in a straight line.

Finally someone knows the value of this bike and what it can offer. Also people don't know that Kawasaki had to upgrade their exhaust from the original underbelly to side mount because they had to add another catalytic converter to meet Euro 5 emissions which added more weight. As an ex Australian Superbike racer who started out racing on track in the Australian 250 cc production series (basically full of Suzuki’s RGV-250’s) where the only changes you could do was take all the road going parts off (leaving just the tacho) and replacing the fairings with race fibreglass ones. This was, and still is the best class I ever raced in as all bikes were basically equal and you were limited to the best street legal tyres for all conditions. Luckily, I still have the first out of two I raced. It just hasn’t been started in over 25 years. Purely based on lap times from my old home racetrack being Phillip Island, the cut off lap times to just qualify for racers is faster than what the occasional track day rider achieves on an a new R1 to put it into perspective. Great review Hero and well explained as like Kawasaki did for the inline 4 cylinder 400 Suzuki gave the little v-twin two stroke all the goodies it had at the time. It’s also the same class that most of the Australian World Champions started on when they finished racing dirt bikes. 👍😎🇦🇺

My only complaint is if it is so track and supersport oriented, why didn't they do a aluminum frame, removal aluminum subframe and swingarm? This could have got the weight down under 400. Also forks only have rebound, but they could have made them with all the adjustments of the ZX6R. This bike should be 7-8k tops with those things. But you are right, regarding the engine and actually doing inverted forks in a 400, Kawasaki got this right, but for 10K i want aluminum frame, swingarm and subframe that is aluminum and bolts up. Forks could be sorted with the right cartridge kit, but again you will be looking at $1k+ for Ohlins NIX, KTech or Andreani EVO's, so make that $9600 at $10-11K before tax and crap. This bike is for me........but at this price without those mentioned things they tease me and think I am a dummy? lol Its like they got 10 foot before the finish line in first place, then stopped to celebrate an early victory. Maybe they will do the next one upgraded with those items......one can only hope. Or Honda brings back the RVF400R modernized and does it right 😉

I’m guessing they don’t plan to sell a ton of these relatively speaking since it’s “only a 400”, and many riders today just want a bike with a large engine to brag to their friends about while it sits in their garage, or for going fast in a straight line.
@Bristecom
@Bristecom Жыл бұрын
An alloy frame would be a lot more expensive. Steel has its advantages in durability and feel/flex while only being slightly heavier so I think they made the right choice. However, they should have at least made the swingarm alloy and could have made the subframe removable for easier repair. And yeah, they definitely should have added compression and rebound adjustment for the forks - it's stupid that they didn't as that shouldn't cost them hardly anything extra since it's the same fork.

Making a piston smaller doesn’t save much money. That’s why the cost is so close to the ZX6R. I’m sure the steel frame is the only reason it doesn’t cost over $10k. The people that can’t understand this are the same ones that will complain about the cost of a fairing as it’s “just a piece of plastic “ but don’t see the cost behind designing it, having tooling made, painting it, storing in a warehouse, shipping, other overhead. The ZX6R might be a better value, but where else do you want them to cut cost? And as far as weight, people are also wishing it had a 180 rear instead of a 160. Again, where do you want weight cut? Using fancy materials to make it lighter will only add more cost.

For a long time we had makers making the best bikes they could by capacity. Pretty much every category had something with top drawer components. Then the usual bang for buck crowd got in there and it was the usual race to the bottom for quality and price followed by price hikes back to more than before - meaning you're paying more now than you would have for better bikes before. All the best bikes used to be affordable (if not cheap) and the best sellers were often full blown superbikes. Kawasaki themselves used to have the KR-1S, the ZXR250, ZXR400 and ZXR750 - all basically a set of rubber and taking off the road gear away from being full on track bikes. Then there was the ZX range of 4R, 6R, 7R and 10R - again with some of the best components and some of the most powerful engines - each generation getting much more power and higher quality chassis. Then we went through a phase where we've had ever increasing prices and only really electronics to seperate one year from another for around 10 years - all while some of them have been dropped altogether. The inline twin craze is almost an insult to riders. Almost all of them are just commuter bikes with a fairing lashed on. Hardly any adjustability on their low rent suspension and chassis/engines lifted straight from the commuter bikes they're based on. The one stand out is the RS660 - bespoke engine (which is now used in other bikes but it was developed for the RS first), top end components and the full chassis/electronics suite. For me I think the only thing the ZX-4R is missing is an alloy frame to get rid of a bit of weight. On the other hand there are good reasons not to go that way for racing - if a minimum weight is in force for example the extra flex and traction that provides is very useful. Maybe they intend it to race in a category where those rules are coming? Or maybe they did it on the H2 and realised weight isn't everything. I wonder if we will every see a supercharged version...

@@Blakezilla594 I'm aware, my degrees are in aerospace and mechanical engineering. I do however love duct tape and have made all sorts of things work that really shouldn't have and have a fondness for the redneck engineering I used to do before getting a degree (you learn a lot by just doing and trying things, then analyzing). You can relatively easy run 2 engines to a single output, OR you could do something like have one engine drive a left sprocket and the other a right sprocket (very easy to do with 2 strokes since you only need to adjust where the ignition is to make them run backwards, but still not impossible with 4 strokes either). Easiest way with 4 strokes is to have 2 stacked sprockets (just like your pulleys are stacked on engines for driving alternator/fan/water pump/etc on old engines) and have 1 engine sitting right above the other with about an inch more left and voila you've got a standard wheel, standard engines, and only thing you had to do was weld some spacers to stand off 2 sprockets. Easy. I've also got a couple front wheel drive motorbikes that I've designed and they work fantastic, so really you don't even need the rear wheel to be driven, just saying.

A quick breakdown on how/why the ZX4RR weighs 50 lbs more than the Ninja 400: - thicker, more strengthened engine cases to deal with higher internal stresses, forces and loads, along with having a longer crankshaft with more pistons, connecting rods, cam length and valves to deal with. - a heavier-duty rigid frame structure derived from the ZX6R platform - heavier-duty, larger diameter front forks and rear shock to handle significantly higher speeds, accelerating forces and braking forces - heavier duty chain and sprockets to deal with significantly higher final drive torque output. the ZX4RR is almost guaranteed to have a larger overall gear reduction ratio from the engine to the final drive due to its significantly higher operating RPM range. - more purpose-built wheels, along with larger and more brake rotors and calipers as well.

It is targeted to people living in Japan, wanting to ride their bike on the twisties and go to the track as well. In Europe or the US I would rather take a 600cc bike over this, since the licenses are not by displacement of the engine. The reason I believe they didn't want to make a 400cc inline 4 is that it doesn't make any sense for Kawasaki to spend more money on the heavier engine and more moving parts. More moving parts equal more maintenance, all this for only 25lbs of torque. So they try to offset it by selling it with leftover suspension components? Mild suspension upgrades, NOT racing suspension. Mild brake upgrades, still not racing spec'd. No Ohlins, No Brembo, No DDC, Not even steel brake lines. But a Premium price? Pay for the Squish huh? This IMO is not a race-oriented bike, it's Race INSPIRED. Which means class stock racing or track day weekends and street curves. But if I started on a Ninja 400, this would be the best next upgrade, then onto something with double the torque. Great stepper bike IMO... But we'll see...It's the motor sound that is going to make is sell.. Honestly, they should have made it electric...lol would have been faster.

That's a very fair comparison. Although, as a manufacturer, they don't need to spend on the original parts for comparison. So I would have liked to see this end up the low $8K price range. While that might seem low in your comparison, at that, I think this would absolutely become the de-facto bike - trouncing the competition in sales. At it's current price range, I am a little worried it will get just low enough sales for there to be a risk of them to pulling after a few years. PS this is absolutely the bike I am looking for - for daily riding! If it were priced as I had hoped, I could easily sell 1 bike and add a bit to get it. At it's current price, it's a bit more than I can justify splurging on (will be saving up that splurge budget instead). I wouldn't be at all surprised to see these used 2 years from now still hanging at above $7K, because people won't want to get rid of them.

The fact that the 600 is only a grand more makes the 400 way less appealing. If they priced the new bike at around $7-8k it would be killer.

That torque is quite low. My cb400 makes much less hp, like 55, but high 30s in torque. Really hoping they bring it back in a new and greater form to the global market, as it was pretty criminal how they barely sold the cb400 outside of japan.

To your point, if this bike is made for track riders who want a "slow bike" to go fast on and will spare no expense, the RS660 for $1800 more is the better choice. It has the liter bike IMU with Race ABS, and other electronic things that come with an IMU. The RS660 is much lighter and the 80% torque at 4k rpms gives it a better overall performance in the rev range. And to add to the reliability portion, track riders hardly care about blown motors. The warranty on both bikes are similar and the bikes will both break at the track. The RS660 is the better choice for the track. But I think the zx4rr is also a good bike..I just don't think it has enough value. If the power to weight of the zx4rr is better than the ninja 400, the power to weight on the RS660 is even better than that.

I was always a Yamaha Fan with Honda and Kawasaki and Triumph close second depending on what one is looking for.. But since owning a 2018 Ninja 400 I am in love with the capable little thing especially on little damp backroads in the United Kingdom and respect for the Kawasaki brand has grown... And I agree... Smaller Capacity bikes are just more fun... It's not always about power.
