T.K. Morris I did not. At a final sale price of under $16k, it was too good of a deal to pass up. I’m sure the GTI would have been great, but I couldn’t justify that big of a price percentage difference. A Jetta S manual is an excellent basic car, and an extraordinary value. It has more features standard than me 2012 Camry SE had that I traded in, which had nearly double the msrp.

Don’t forget the 35th anniversary cars come with the adaptive dampers that the other GLI’s don’t. That makes it even more of a performance bargain when compared to the GTI. You can also already find these at $3500 to $4000 off MSRP and there are some used factory cars out there also.
@epiczeus9455 жыл бұрын
The 35th Anniversary would be worth it if it were specced out like the 35th's from the rest of the world. The REAL 35th Anniversary Editions are a combination of everything in both the US Spec 35th Anniversary Edition and the Autobahn Edition all for $25k. Here we pay $25k for the 35th and $28K for the Autobahn......for less features.... I wonder how hard it is to import a Real 35th Anniversary Edition from Canada.....
@SilverShareHolder4 жыл бұрын
@@epiczeus945 I went with the Autobahn but when deciding VW made it frustrating with the lack of options, doesn't have the Digital Cockpit Navigation feature like the Canadian cars, or the rear air vents another market has (China?) Doesn't have the adaptive cruise, parking assist or foglights from the SEL Premium, can't get the DCC with leather only on the 35th, the GTI has more heavily bolstered seats, no height adjustment on passenger seat. Really like the car & happy with it, would have been happier if I could have gotten the features I wanted all together in one car.

SilverShareHolder do you know if the 2020 autobahn has the DCC?
@SilverShareHolder4 жыл бұрын
@@devn3813 It does. The 19 only had it on the 35th anniversary edition while Canada I believe had it on their Autobahn. For 2020 I believe the US Autobahn has DCC. I'm planning to go with Bilistine B16 ride control coilovers on my 19 eventually it will give me a button for sport mode & comfort mode dampening, probably put the button into the center armrest console somehow, maybe integrate it into some kind of custom change tray or something to try to keep it clean. I plan to install foglights from the SEL Jetta tomorrow, I think I'll have the first MK7 GLI with Foglights, not sure about any video but I'll be posting it on IG same username hopefully I'll have it done by tomorrow night. Right now I'm APR Stage 2 ECU Tune & IE TCU tune, Dogbone insert & pendulum mount, OZ Alleggerita rims went with those because they're 18 pounds. I didn't like the Autobahn wheels, really like the 35th anniversary wheels but they would have been expensive to order & weigh 24 pounds each so for the same price went with these. Really like the car, one of the main reasons I went with it was because of the new Infotainment but the Android Auto wired connectivity has been a huge headache for me, tried different phones cords asked dealer etc but it's hit or miss, blue tooth works but lose navigation on screen. I might switch to an I-Phone just because their is a dongle to allow wireless with Car Play but none for Android Auto want to see if that will solve the problem. I would switch headunit for aftermarket with wireless android auto but then I would use all the functions of the stock infotainment system, the sport, custom & normal mode which I could live without but I'd lose the driver seat position presets, tire pressure setting, digital tachometer etc. Hopefully eventually VW will offer one I can retrofit, seems that would be the best option, wish I could have bought the car featured exactly how I wanted without tradeoffs. I will say, as it was from factory I love the car. If you don't "need" leather & a sunroof I would say look for a deal on a 2019 35th anniversary edition, either way can't go wrong.

I drive down the road and touch the dash. Since the same car is sold in many markets, choices in the largest markets (China) determine what the US and even Europe get. In the past, Chinese market cars haven’t needed to be trimmed out nicely on the inside to sell well.......so, manufacturers streamline production options to keep costs down. I would pay extra for nicely trimmed interiors, but when the manufacturers can cut $100 per vehicle by going with hard plastics, that decreases costs by 50 million dollars on 500,000 cars produced. VW produced 6 million cars in 2017.

I mean... Spoilers and wings (which are different) are always useful for any layout whether it be MR, FR, FF, etc. Creating downforce (for wings), preventing lift, and improving drag coefficients (spoilers) is always good. it's not about what wheels drive the car. it's about overall stability, grip levels, and being able to have the car rotate around a corner properly. Unless you were joking with the spoiler comment lol. Anyways, great review. Edit: Also, spoilers don't really add any significant amounts of down force. They're really there to improve the overall aerodynamic flow of the car. For any sort of aero piece to be effective it has to be outside the cars "dirty air zone" so to speak, even though that's not a very technical term at all lol. You need clean, unaffected air to create downforce effectively, hence why time attack cars have ridiculously tall wings.

And my current 2009 Mazda 6 sSport trim V6. Yup, all my life.... Honestly, I'd rather have a GTI hatchback. Great performance, more interior cargo space, and 17 inches shorter so you don't have to spend time hunting around for a bigger parking spot. Very first time I saw the current GLI sedan was in a parking lot, at an angle. Went to take a closer look. Genuinely thought it was VW's new Mid-size Passat! It's as big as a Passat from a few years ago. I prefer the security of a lockable trunk. But this generation of the "Jetta" is too big and too long for anyone looking for a true compact car.

Love the infotainment high above the air vents, but the radio does need an upgrade. I haven’t had any issue where the hard plastics are. And if they upgraded them it wouldn’t be such a bargain. I don’t mind the long throws on the shift, makes me feel like I am really ‘driving’ the car. Although 6th is tough to hit right sometimes. Good showing on the ambient lighting. It really adds to the overall impressions. Overall value, well done VW.

I completely agree with you on this one. Currently I have two Mk7 Jetta's, an S trim from last year and a two month old 35th Anniversary GLI both with the 6 speed manual. Of course they are excellent cars but this GLI took me by complete surprise with it's performance and handling capability. An interesting fact about the GLI not only is it just as fast as my first car, a 1969 Mustang with a 351 V8, but also both Car & Driver and Road and Track both got their test GLI's to out perform the GTI's and Rabbits on the track recently. Right at 6000 wonderfully enjoyable miles so far and with very sparing use of the AC I am still getting about 31 mpg in mostly city and mountain road driving. Super fun and quick on the back roads but I did feel the factory muffler setup was too quiet for me and since no catbacks are currently available I had a local muffler shop replace the resonator and mufflers with a single glasspack. She sounds about perfect now. The adaptive dampeners or DCC is extremely effective with keeping the roll under control and still can be soft enough to every day driving. Nice interior, love the ambient lighting and seats but agreed on the materials could use some upgrades. Not bad at all and way nicer than the base S trim of course but yes, more soft touch would have been great. Does have an upgraded sound system from the standard S trim plus some nice safety features my other one didn't have. Highly recommended for a high value performance car that you can still impress your mom with and take to autocross on the weekends. Plus at $1600 less than a Golf GTI it is a better performance value or if you just prefer the sedan look this is your vehicle. Also in the Pure Grey I actually get quite a few lookers and people asking me about the car and many compliments. It's been great fun, love the VeeDub life. Thanks for the extended review Nathan!

@@MeltingRubberZ28 this car is seriously awesome! I also notice that reviewers do not know how to drive this car properly.. 1 simple tug back on the DSG gear selector (after the car is in drive) puts the car's transmission into sport mode .. this is the transmission only which makes the revs way different and changes the turbo boost timing. All of this in normal drive mode w/ just the transmission in Sport... then when DCC is selected and Sport mode activated you now have Sport mode with optional sport or normal transmission options (transmission mode indicated by either a little 'D' or 'S' in the middle mini digi display and it's activated by the little tug back on the DSG gear selector). So regardless of whichever DCC drive mode you are in you always have instant Sport mode transmission option .. so far I have not seen 1 reviewer show this feature. This transmission option is very noticeable and rad. Enjoy the new GLI35! 🤙

The US spec gets the adjustable dampers also. I know because I own the exact same car that is in this video (but with dsg). I like the US spec GLI better because it costs a LOT less and I don't like leatherette seats and I hate sunroofs. I MUCH prefer cars with cloth seats and no sunroof). I have no need for a digital display either ( probably super expensive to repair when they start getting glitchy). I have adaptive cruise in my Pacifica and never use it (I don't like it because I like to set my own pace...not follow other people's pace). As far as Nav goes...this car comes with apple play and android play...so you can just hook up your phone and get better Nav for free). Or you can purchase a Garmin car GPS and save a ton of money. I would like having the bigger screen for the entertainment system...but the bigger one is not THAT much bigger...so I'm fine with the 6.5 inch screen. I got my 2019 white 35th edition GLI with DSG for a little over 24K (almost 5k under it's MSRP). Try getting the Canada spec version for anything close to that. I am very happy with this US spec GLI. Because the rest of the world ONLY GETS 2 GLI Trim levels, the S and the 35. The US market gets screwed. That is why I’m fixing to pay Border Buddy to handle the Customs and Import paperwork and fees so I can purchase a REAL GLI 35. The Canadian Spec 35 is around $35k CAD which is a little over $26k US + $1600 to import it with border buddy, which puts it around the same price as the autobahn. As a former Volkswagen sales man out here in Germany I would recommend that you purchase a Toyota or a Honda. The TSI engines make trouble and it's not the question if the DSG makes trouble, it's the question when does it make trouble. My Golf engine didn't last a 100.000km. Almost everybody I know that drives a Volkswagen product (VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat are the main brands) has or had trouble. But my fellow countryman are a little stup.. and still buying german brands (almost 50% just for VW, Mercedes, Audi and BMW in 2019 so far). They still think the reliability with german cars is like in the 80's. Get something different. If you want one of those, get a manual.

DAILYGRIND and that’s where you are so wrong. This isn’t the mk4 generation anymore lol. The mk6 and 7’s are notoriously reliable, basic maintenance bits like brakes last twice as long then Japanese counterparts, VW will go well over 100k miles before pads and rotors need replacement. A WRX will need new brakes by 40k, the EJ engines are high maintenance and will require timing belt changes, headgasket replacement, water pump replacement by 100k miles. The 2.0t has been refined, it’s not uncommon for these TSI engines to go well over 200k miles without any issues. Good luck getting that out of a WRX....

DAILYGRIND Just because a Toyota Corolla/Camry will continue to drive with broken/malfunctioning parts doesn’t make them reliable. 20 years from now, are you going to be able to get parts for your Toyota Corolla 4cyl, or your VW 2.0L turbo, cheaply, and more reliably? Yeah, VW all day. Also, This A888 4cyl are being pushed - reliably - way north of the 300HP mark all over the VAG line, AND that 7-speed DSG has had a LONG, long run in Europe and has been made reliable enough for the US market. Finally, the MQB architecture that this is based on just about guarantee reliability AND that parts availability will be well into the future.
