Well... I couldn't help but see the "for sale" sign in the back seat... Hope, if it has to go - it goes to a good home. I'd hate to see it resto-moded into something with yet another SBC in it - instead of some version of the 'Studebaker' V-8. Everything shouldn't 'always' be about..... "more power"

In late 1962 I ordered a Gran Turismo Hawk! The dealer advised me of some coming options that would soon be available! Seems he had a mole in South Bend! What I eventually wound up with was a '63 with an optional R-3 supercharged 304 CID Avanti engine, front disc brakes, 4 speed, beefed up suspension, and other goodies. The Avanti engines had some modifications not found on the stock engines such as special camshaft, valve springs, etc! As I recall there were less than 100 built with that engine option! Car was very stable at high speeds, held the road unlike anything I had ever driven. It would peg the 160 MPH speedometer, Had it over 30 years, put over 240,000 miles on it. Sold it in '93, still running. Been kicking myself every since!

I really, really - really! Wanted an Avanti... as did a lot of people. So much so that even after Studebaker closed; The Avanti was revived 3, 4 ... maybe 5 times? The hawks as well as the Avanti, could be purchased with an early version of the Paxton centrifugal supercharger, from the factory. Gear-heads still lust after them - they were really one of the first cars to get into streamlining. ... as a kid, me and a few buddies actually pooled our limited funds (from summer jobs) and bought a President (a 4-door sedan made by Studebaker) with that same 289 Studebaker V-8... we ended up selling it, for parts - to some collector, who was restoring '54 Hawk - at least it died a "noble" death!

Dcc357 it was probably shot on 35mm film which can be easily converted to HD or 4K. I feel bad for shows recorded "live on videotape" for example "All in the family". If you watch the reruns, it's always blurry, and you can not make out objects in the background, and even close up shots lack even basic detail.

I think they had 3 performance levels on that engine too. R1, R2 and R3. The R3 set land speed records at the Salt Flats if memory serves. No cop car could catch them on the open road!

THANK YOU BOTH_! I'm fast pushing 80 years, & started bonding with Dad as his "go-ferr" in 1943. The smells of repairing. The polishing of all the Carome, & of horse-hair stuffing. The car my Dad gave me was a boxy red & white Nash/Rambler. I tweeked it with rubber bands & coat hanger wire to get 3rd gear going right. even now I feel alive as I slip from my walker to slide on plastic under a car. What a delight to see a young fellow so avid & aware of real true cars. Thanks U_2 again. I'm still a Shade Tree Manic, now Tweekin a Montero Sport 2000. what a pleasure, wish I could have had some real shop training. Dad, was my brains he did NOT have to use--- books__ I do . The Hawk restyle for 1962 was an afterthought. Sherwood Egbert, new president of Studebaker-Packard inherited something of a financial mess when he came on board in early 1961. He immediately saw the need for a complete redesign of the '61 model line, hoping that it could be ready in time for the '62 model year. He brought industrial designer Brooks Stevens ("...the seer that made Milwaukee famous..."), known for pulling very frisky rabbits out of very shabby hats) in. Stevens simplified model offerings, facelifted and revised the Lark line (which had its origins in the 1953-model sedans) extensively and had the new models ready in time for the autumn introduction. Most importantly, the Lark design and tooling came in under budget. There was little money or time to redesign the Hawk (Stevens later remarked that the budget for the entire Studebaker redesign was about the same as for a Plymouth door handle), yet he made the Gran Turismo Hawk look entirely new with a new roofline, simplified rear quarter panels, and some carefully styled trim bits (notably those taillights and the stainless band around the grille tombstone). There was no money in the budget to revise the rear deck stamping (a complicated panel with narrow horizontal ribs). Stevens' solution was the simple stamped stainless steel panel, textured and painted to echo the tombstone grille mesh. Brilliant, beautiful, and it looked expansive but actually saved money. The '63 Hawks got a face-lifted grille and front trim, along with a revised stainless panel for the deck lid. In '64, Stevens managed a complete reskin of the bread-and-butter Lark-type models (now called Challenger, Commander, Cruiser, Daytona, and Wagonaire), and finally had enough budget to smooth the deck lid for the limited final run of Gran Turismo Hawks.

Some 1962 hits are "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" by The Four Seasons, "Ramblin' Rose" by Nat King Cole, "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Ray Charles, "Can't Stop Falling in Love" and "Return to Sender" by Elvis Presley, "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs, "The Locomotion" by Little Eva, and "The Monster Mash" by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and the Crypt-kickers.

@@alanblanes2876 Great year for cars in general, yes. Great year for Studebaker specifically, no. The Chevrolet-Ford price war basically crippled all the remaining Independents and the fact that Studebaker was completely unprepared for the demand on their lovely coupes didn't help matters. 1953 was really the moment when Studebaker was doomed as an automaker. Everything afterwards just forestalled the inevitable. However, that element of creative desperation is exactly why I love my '62 GT Hawk so much. It's just great!

A car never heard of? Your kidding, right? Maybe non car buffs, but people who know cars from the 50's and 60's would know the fabulous Hawks. The GT, or Gran Turismo models were the first GT's, and were as classicly designed as a Packard, or Duesenberg from the 30's. It's low production will make it more and more coveted over time. Compare it to say something like a Rambler Marlin and you'll see it's beauty, elegance and grace. Other similar cars of It's era were of course the Thunderbird, and the Chrysler Turbine.

That GT Hawk is a beauty. I owned a 1957 Packard Clipper (made by Studebaker) from 1998-2002 with the same 289 motor and used the thing as my daily driver...it was surprisingly reliable and actually never left me stranded. thanks for sharing with us.

What a GREAT kid! And such a nice Stude! And for all the Schmoes commenting below on "how the kid looks/dresses/thinks", etc... THANK GOD he's not "like"" 80% of "normal" people, who could actually care less about most things... This guy is truly interested in our AMERICAN CULTURE. I'm turning 52 and have been in to Rockabilly since I was about 14.... I had/have the haircuts, clothes, cars, motorcycles, boats, homes... All the "real" AMERICAN STUFF... Man, was I considered goofy back in the 1980s! But STILL haven't changed, and yes, Virginia... I'll keep on till I'm dead! I believe that "modern day" folks have become kind of complacent to and with the consumer krap we're fed constantly, in all respects... Like "needing'" to have the flavor of the minute THINGS, all while squealing about what absolute JUNK most stuff is nowadays... So we then turn around and BUY MORE JUNK... this kid TRULY "GETS IT", at least for now... Glad to see this!!!! Cheers!

Well, it sure is nice to hear such kind words from the older folk here. My first experience with classic cars was with a rather plumby 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk. III and a 1979 MG Midget that liked to set herself on fire when she was feeling just the right flavor of pissy. From there, I migrated to Big Three stuff, but I soon realized that those cars did not suit me at all. No…what I needed was an Independent. As for how I dress, I simply like to do it. It is out there while still being dignified and classy. Thanks again for the comment.

Fun fact to all of you gents: The GT Hawk when new had a MSRP of $3,095. While that was a quite a chunk of change for the period, the only competitor to this car (the almighty Thunderbird) carried an eye-watering price tag of $4,453 before cracking open the options book. If anyone thinks that this car is "unneeded", I can name plenty of things that are more so, knockoff Twinkies being one of them.

In mid 1962 I went to a Studebaker dealer to order a GT Hawk. I have always been the type that avoids a "Me too" life style, so instead of buying what every one else did, I chose the Hawk! Dealer convinced me to wait for the '63 model because it would be available with some very interesting options and upgrades! What I wound up with was one of, as I recall, less than 100 built with the Avanti R-3 engine option! That was the fastest car I have ever driven, was capable of pegging the 160 MPH speedometer, cruised effortlessly at 80, averaged about 22 MPG at that speed, and held the road with tremendous stability. Absolutely no "float"! I sold it in '93, still running, with over 240,000 miles to a fellow who has restored it! Engine was top overhauled just under 200,000 miles! Wish I still had it!
