In this video I'm driving the Civic Type R Sportline - the result of many people's requests to have a slightly toned down version of the Type R. However, I ask whether the car is now improved, made worse - or if it fails to do enough to justify being called a new model?

I normally agree with your reviews but not in this case. My 2017 car is extremely responsive, especially at 4k revs as tested here. Admittedly I have a cold air intake and cat back exhaust which has probably freed up the mid range somewhat but it was not particularly laggy before. My other car is a 997 carrera s so I know about engine response. The benefits of 20k miles on the clock perhaps. Furthermore, the aircon is extremely effective at all times and on a run I have seen well over 40mpg when sitting at 80ish. Again, an engine which is properly run in perhaps. I agree about the in car electronics though. I can understand someone buying the gti if they can't abide the looks but in every other way that matters the civic is on another planet.

I own a FK8 Type R and I have to say on road it gets a lot of positive attention and thumb's up ... admittedly a large proportion of those people are teenage boys 😂. About that gearbox. Aftermarket TypeR specialists solved that issue. Gearbox is fine but it need heat shield and different oil. You should do both of those thing immediately after purchase. Have to say i disagree with you on this one quite a lot. Looks are subjective I like it, to me it's a lot more interesting than the same golf design that's been around for about 10 years now and quality seems to be getting less. But I've always felt that the media have gone to far saying they don't like this car. that's your opinion let people make there own mind on that. The engine (i have driven quite a few type r's and leased one for about 4 months) is one of the most interesting to drive modern units I've driven it actually revs out rather than running out of puff at about 5.5k and i used to get low 40's out of it on my 120 mile weekly commutes. Also disagree with you on the steering feel. Yes its an electric rack which isn't great for feel. but find a modern high power front wheel drive hatch that's better. You can certainly find a large number that at completely lifeless in comparison. As for the sport line I agree it could of been better executed. However, even it had of been I still don't think it would have sold with any real numbers as I don't think it would ever tempt people out of a golf or focus or megane. If they didn't get that the civic was like that to be different they wouldn't get one anyway

The Fk2 19 wheels with 245/35PS4S as fitted to the SportLine make a big difference to the usability and ride of this car on our pothole riven roads with no change in handling. I agree somewhat with your thoughts here James. Honda should have stuck to keeping the Type R as an out-and-out B road monster, wing and all, whilst pushing the Si as the "grown up" sports hatch. That way they can still do what they do best with the R, whilst taking a slice of the Golf money. I'm surprised at the MPG though, as I manage mid to low 40's in my FN2 Type R and use it as a daily. That comically huge boot makes it far more practical than such a fast hatchback has any right to be. Couple that with it being the last generation of 9k RPM N/A screamer, and I think you'll see why although I respect and admire the later Turbo cars for thier raw grunt, I feel Honda have left behind part of what made the R something truly unmatched. Honda made a hatchback for those who are comfortable with being thier own person and owning thier passions, a subdued and meek design is the antithesis of that.

Excellent video, I spied several times from a different 'perspective' one of Harry Metcalfe's favourite corners for his road tests, lol, it's a great area for cross-country driving.

LOL, it's not that the market is strange 15:02, it's that all (worldwide) FK8 were produced in Swindon, UK, and that plant shut down (forever) at the end of July 2021.

Too many sharp angles. The design would be better if it got rid of the BMW shark fin that every car has these days. It breaks the roof line too much esspecially when they went to the trouble of integrating the first spoiler into the roof line. The design overall does look shit though, looks like something bloody Ali G would drive. It's very gaudy and tasteless.

From watching this video James, my guess is that you will not like the GT3 Touring when you get to drive it on your regular test roads. I'm not sure about the 991.2 GT3 Touring, but I heard that the 992 GT3 Touring shares the same suspension settings as the 'regular' GT3 with a big wing. So what was meant to be a more subtle/discrete GT3 with a name that implies 'for the road', happens to have the same stiff ride as the track focused winged' brother. Looking on the Porsche configurator, the 991.2 GT3 Touring was pretty much a 'package' that you ticked in the option list, but for the 992 GT3 Touring - they made it its own model in the 911 line-up.

The criticism of the interior and features seems a bit unfair considering how much cheaper it is than something like a Golf GTI. The important stuff (excluding the turbo lag) is very good and I'm sure many people would rather put up with some lower quality switchgear and a low res rear view camera to save that kind of money. BTW, I don't get the need for high res cameras. If you can't see objects you're likely to hit in the lower res cameras out there, then you shouldn't be driving and should be visiting an optician.

In North America the new generation is out (for non-Rs). It's much less of a boy-racer look, I wonder if the Type R will also look more restrained.

Yes, you can find spy photos if you look. It's just like the Civic but with a medium sized wing. Bigger than the sportline, smaller than the GT.

After Jay missed the mark by a country mile with his first GR Yaris video, I don’t think I see him as a driver that reviews the way cars handle. He’s more a casual car ‘enjoyer’. So in that regard, his opinions on cars aren’t taken too seriously here.

I was going to buy one of these but the 2nd hand market went crazy and wasn't worth getting (over 40k for one) so I ended up getting a 1.5 sport instead. After driving it for a few months I can say I've made the right choice it's much more comfortable and imo looks better as I'm not a fan of the boy racer look of the og type r. I just wish honda made a model in between the sport and the type r (like the old type s). My plan is to make my car like the type s they never made by using a ktuner or hondata to hopefully get a power figure in between the 2 models.

superb review. Even the 19"wheels are stupid if you don't want to eat rims. Yes awesome handler but still not adult. Have had 3 Hondas and quite frankly the company does not "get it". Think it was commandeered by millennial. Where are cars like my old 84 civic S? Or my 94 Accord Ex 5 speed manual wagon!

Those are 19 inch wheels? They appear rather small on the car. This is due to a high waistline, common on many modern cars.

That wing & sharp edges are why I didn't buy one. I was invited down to Honda to have a sneak preview before it was put in the showroom. The tech was good but I just couldn't see myself in it, well I could but as a little 'tit'. Now a toned down version in styling, great! but now all the small bits you mention makes me think, that's what I like about your reviews. You get it all so thanks.

Tbh o think you’re wrong on the gearbox - it’s more than capable of handling the power, in fact the standard box and clutch will take 500nm. The problem is how you’re driving it, far too many people slam it into gear and expect the gearbox to just take it, sadly this probably the outcome of DSG/zf8. Nobody cares for a box anymore. I wouldn’t say the error is with your friend as he probably can drive excellently, but the sad reality is that he bought it secondhand, likely from some yobbo who used to slam the gears like they owed him money😂 This seems to be a massive thing in the American community where they all claim the gearbox is shit, but funnily enough the problem rarely rears it’s head in the UK. Obviously there are the odd lemons but I can honestly say I’ve never had an issue with mine

The problem with Hondas these days is their body styling is terrible. It's almost like they never worked out how to smoothly style the swollen body dimensions required for modern crash testing, compared to all the old sporty cars etc Honda used to make in the 90s. I really don't know how Honda are still in the car business, because, with the exception of the Honda E, the last 'good looking' car they made was (in my opinion) the 7th Gen Accord Type S from 2003. Everything else more recent has just been bloated and generic.

Even with a COVID mask I will still feel embarrassed driving a Honda type R, i I’d rather own a GR Yaris if I am hard pushed. Edit: Honda along with BMW lost their identity with the bastardisation of bolt on blowers in their cars, Honda was the kind of four pot cylinders and BMW used to be the king of stra8 six, not anymore. I concur with you JayEmm.
