My dad worked with the people from Honda at Cowley, when they were working out how to put the Honda Legend together. The managers welcomed the workers everyday, and asked the team who were putting it together for their opinion on everything to do with the car. With that attitude, it is no surprise that they get it right.

There's still a lot they got wrong as well, though.. from the factory, anyway. Of course those issues can all be fixed with aftermarket parts but there's some things that should have been done differently, imo.

Would you say the Honda Legend Saloon/Rover 827 Fastback was a better car on the whole than the predecessor Rover SD1? it's ironic that the classic V8 RWD SD1 is far more collectable even though the 827 Fastback is roughly the same shape and is objectively better in every way (more powerful, faster, more interior space due to FWD, more fuel efficient, possibly more reliable etc). Car buyers, particularly classic car buyers, are not rational. 🙂

@@TassieLorenzo For sure you’re right the Honda Legend/Rover 827 (Honda engined as you’re no doubt aware was a good collaboration with the Honda engine & gearbox which is what Honda do brilliantly coupled with the Rover experience of ride/handling & suspension experience and good seats & interiors. The 2675cc Honda motor I think from memory was much torquier than the previous 2.5L version which was lacking in torque. The 2.7L engine was a longer stroke version I believe with offset crankpins so it’s a 90 degree V6 (more normally 60 degree for inherent balance) to obtain a lower bonnet line. I loved the Roy Axe design especially the non facelifted version, so uncluttered lines. I once fancied buying one. An interesting fact I believe a standard 2.7litre can’t remember if it was the Honda or the Rover 827. Nevertheless with just minor upgrades presumably for performance and safety, think the car just had upgraded brake pads, slick tyres a fire extinguisher. It was piloted by a helmeted Tony Pond and achieved an average speed of 100mph which was no mean feat back then.

@@TassieLorenzo Yes I definitely would. You're not wrong there the price some classic cars go for are crazy. I am subscribed to 'CAR Magazine' and its funny but some of the top designer/engineers of our generation when asked, modern car or classic often choose the modern car due to better brakes safety handling etc. Looks is always subjective i suppose.....

I have just taken delivery of my FL5, after owning two FK8 models. The sum of all the FL5 tweaks, although small, makes a noticeable difference. To say I am loving this iteration of the Type R is an understatement. Such an enjoyable car to drive. Admittedly, the small boy in me liked the crazy look of the FK8, but the adult in me assures me the more refined palette of design choices was the right move by Honda.

I seem to always have to correct some reviewers on the following. The front bumper side "fake vents" (as they call them), are actually a functional aspect of the aero setup. They are air kickouts, to maintain a laminal flow of air past the front wheel well, rather than sending a turbulent flow that gets sucked into the wheel well. Reason is because they have air rams in the front to pump cool air into the front brake setup, and a vent in the back of the wheel well to let that air out - it maintains a low pressure zone without letting high pressure buildup which leads to front end lift. If they didn't have these side air kickouts the air going around the front bumper would get sucked into the wheel well and interrupt that low pressure flow. The other point is he claims the rear diffuser isn't functional. That's also incorrect, the bottom of the car is almost complet flatly sealed. In particular the engineers paid attention to the rear diffuser this time around and made it even more functional than the FK8. All the aero on this car is functional, none of it is just for show. That's another thing I love about this latest generation Type-R.
@jeremyb4493

The color along with the rear end and the wing on this Civic Type-R give me some Alpine A110 vibes. Fun review to watch and the nice little slow motion shot at the end was a nice touch. 👍

On the previous FK8 Type R it's very easy to get 40mpg on a motorway run and average of 35mpg on normal drives. This new Civic is clearly a step up in quality and I see Audi A7 side on. As much as I like it I'll be holding off a year and seeing if price drops for a low mileage.

mmm pity about the GR Corolla. Harry said the GR Yaris sounded better than the latest Type R. From the outside? doubt it; inside, the Yaris has piped in sound - hopefully the Type R doesn't!

One company very much flying the flag for traditional combustion powered, manual front drive hot hatches at the moment is Hyundai, and most of the motoring press, including Evo, have been waxing lyrical about both the i20N and i30N. Would love to see Harry’s take on these cars. Seriously doubt they are as polished as the Civic, but I wouldn’t bet on them being significantly less fun.

Honda could sell everyone of these that they make, twice over. The phrase "well, it's a Honda" pretty much says it all for benchmark reliability. Add "Type R" and you just know it'll be something special. I wasn't a big fan of the angular "transformer" looks of the old model but they've put that to bed nicely with this one.👍 A bigger car than the Yaris and some 140+Kg heavier which might well give the little 'Yota an edge in tight twisties but maybe not as practical as an everyday driver.

Good review as usual, great cars presented, many references in their categories. I do regret not seeing a review, in the same fashion as these other hot-hatches, of the Ford Focus RS Mk3 in its stock form. I think, as a proper Ford Performance product, it deserves a say on the channel and be objectively put in the balance with the other players (golf r, civic, gr yaris etc.). I do not know the reasons for not being reviewed but for sure it will complete the channel's reach and coverage of milestone chapters in automotive history. Looking forward to that sir!

I can't see how anyone can claim to be a hot hatch fan and ignore Hyundai at the moment. Just as people say the Civic Type R is what Porsche would build if they made a front wheel drive hatch, I'd argue the i30N is what BMW's M Division would build. Or would have when Albert Biermann was running it, anyway, given it was engineered by the same guy who gave us the E46 M3 and E39 M5

Some of those corners you didn't need to drop all the way down to 2nd. Drop it to 3rd and ride the torque, less spin and faster exit speed. Had the fk2 for 5 years and was incredibly impressed with it. I can only imagine this thing is sublime.

I’ll be the American… the Ecoboost Mustang has the 2.3 at 310hp, 330 on factory tune based on the Focus RS. This is rent car spec. Yet, the press raves about the Rtype engine. Yes, daily I’ll get 23mpg but when driven right over 35mpg highway. Anyway, I’ll end lamenting that the next Gen Ecoboost Mustang will be 10 speed auto only for fleet sales.

The vent behind the front wheels on the FK8 is a functional vent. But it vents the warm air from the engine room that gets dragged along by the air that goes into the DACA scoop in the bonnet. And the ones on the front are functional as well. The side ones are creating an air curtain around the wheels and the horizontal ones underneath the grill are for brake cooling. The FK8 gets way more hate for the fake vents than it deserves.

They're asking ~£55k for this now!! That puts it in the same league as a high spec BMW M340i. For the same money the BMW crushes it on quality, fit, finish, kit, refinement, space and that amazing straight 6. Honda have lost the plot on this one.

As a happy Honda FN2 type r owner, I'm really happy they have continued to make a petrol version. It'll be the last of its breed, a car made for the people by engineers who listen to its customers, Be interesting if Harry sets the suspension to comfort but the rest of it to what setting he wants in the r mode, Be interesting if he took the Yaris on track and this and see the comparison. I think Honda has the advantage though because you can take all your friends and your luggage on a European tour and take it on the track at the same time.

Like all Honda's, it's not what the car looks like outside, but what's under the bonnet that makes them so good. As a marque they have to be some of the most reliable cars ever made and the Type R epitomises what's so go about Honda's when it comes to performance.
