Hi, One of the examples of how diverse the city of New York is with its architecture (not only in the face of New York Skyscrapers, but also in the face of many other styles, types of New York architecture), culture, characters of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and other parts of this city. I went " Forest Hills Gardens" in the Queens, years ago, because of my job those times. I called this place little Netherland, because of the architecture of the houses, in the place with the church, which also reminded me of the historical fact that at the beginning the Dutch appeared here and for a short time this city was called New Amsterdam before the appearance of the British, the British, respectively, the city changed with name New York. Also, despite all these social and other problems in this city ( wich also means that New York City is so expensive to live for most, ordinary people), after we lived 24 years in this city, New York will always be part of our life with its pros and cons, with its diverse characters, diverse beautiful architecture, cultures of different places of Manhattan, Brooklyn and other parts of New York. One of my favorite places of New York City are im Manhattan: " Gramercy Park" area, Upper West and East Sides, Greenwich Village and others, in Brooklyn: Greenpoint, Brooklyn Heights and others... Sincerely, Alex

It’s really not great anymore. Tons of trash on the street, lots of extreme mental illness. As with a lot of rich neighborhoods in NYC, there’s a huge element of “decay.” So like people whose parents or grandparents were rich but they themselves just inherited a house and never did anything with it.

I grew up in Elmhurst but went to school in Kew Gardens. My school bus used to drive through Forest Hills and (just like Tim) I grew up dreaming of living in one of these houses. Hanging out in Forest Hills on the weekend was always such a treat. I’m based in Asia now and it’s been years since I last walked down these streets and I’m amazed how everything is just as pretty as I remember it (maybe even moreso).

i grew up in Forest Hills Gardens. great memories. the smell of leaves in autumn. winter nights. summer walks. you should also see the beautiful elementary school: PS 101. And the Community House, which has a pool. One more thing: parks. It has beautiful parks. Some you can see -- some are literally hidden and only truly accessible to the houses that surround them! Those were perhaps the most amazing thing. Finally, the celebrities: the nurse in Rear Window, Jimmy Breslin, Geraldine Ferraro, Dale Carnegie, Helen Keller -- and more.

My family lived in this part of Forest Hills, outside the boundary of Forest Hills Gardens. The stadium also hosted US Open Tennis before it moved to Flushing. Before I came along, my parents and sister heard the Beatles, in 1964, play at the stadium and were brought in by helicopter. They opened the windows of our home all the way to hear the concert. After I came along and before moving to another part of Queens, our parents would take us to the stadium to watch some tennis. In 1960, my Mom a new immigrant to the USA, saw JFK campaigning for the 1960 presidential election in the Forest Hills Plaza.

I lived there for twenty years just around the corner on Austin street. I remember the beautiful landscaping at Springtime... and at Christmas, the green wreaths on every lamp post. There is a magnificent Art Deco building I think was called the Leslie, and a small Carolingian style church in the Gardens I sometimes went to. Leaving the busy commercial Austin street & entering under the archways, is like stepping back in time. Jon thanks for the video...well done.

I've known about Forest Hills for decades, but I never read up on it, so I always had an image in my head of something similar to a wealthy Fairfield County, forested town. Now that I've seen it for the first time in this video, the image in my head hasn't been too far off. The homes are a bit closer together than I imagined though, which means I envisioned that it looked LESS like NYC than it actually does.

I hope security isn't going around asking random people what they are doing there still. They did that to me for two years straight when I lived there. Mind you I was living there with another Army veteran after we got out and we are both in our 30's. We were simply using our G.I. Bill for school and both had nice jobs working from home. He is Mexican and I am Black. He's from TX and I'm from CA.... I've never had a speeding ticket in my life, much less been into committing crime. Even when I lived in Hollywood, off of Sunset BLVD in a very nice neighborhood twice as nice as this, no cops ever messed with me. Forest Hills was an experience of security and cops harassing us, and neighbors watching us. Our direct neighbors loved us though. This kind of stuff really happens to us. I'm very political, but I am an Independent. I say that to let people know this happens to us in areas Republicans view as too liberal. And it happens in places Democrats see as too conservative and racist. I love your videos, btw. I'm watching them more again because I am thinking about moving back to get my Masters in MIS. I actually do not mind people messing with me; I think it's hilarious making people look stupid for judging me. I just don't like it when people mess with people I care for. My friend hated it and said he will never move back.

If you want to see very expensive Tudor Style homes in the NY Metro Area, checkout Westchester County especially Scarsdale or Chappaqua where the Clintons live.

Not as wealthy Sunnyside Gardens close to the Queens borough Bridge is another gem without the elitism of FHG. My family has lived there for 40 years. I went to 2 concerts at the old US OPEN Tennis Stadium in Forest Hills. Peter Gabriel and then Genesis in the early 80's. David Berkowitz aka Son Of Sam lived close to my present home in Westchester. Spike Lee's movie Summer Of Sam is spot on. I remember it well. The blackout from around that time was also a big event in NYC history.

Can’t disagree. I accidentally walked and discovered this area when I was searching in forest hills for a condo in 2005. The gardens were way over my humble budget. Due to the co-op rules in forest hills,I decided to move to a small condo in the best neighborhood in queens. Best decision I ever made. Overall if I had the cash and retired I might consider this area, however if I ever return back to nyc to live it will likely be in Astoria.

@@TrainsFerriesFeet can’t rent for 2 years. Need board to approve anything. Condo means you can do anything you want except Airbnb. Co-op selling also requires approval. Lot of hassle

True but most co-op boards in NYC are tough. I bought way back in 2006 and although it was tough, the building is sooo well kept. even though the board annoys me lol.

@@Privateuser9999 I'm moving to NYC or Hudson County when I retire and Co-ops have sounded like they're too strict, which is a pain, IMO. I don't want a SFH, so a condo definitely feels like the best option. Renting an apartment sounds risky from a rent increase standpoint.

You are on point. There are pros and cons of a strict co-op board. If managed appropriately, the outcome is a clean environment, with tenants that view the building as a community rather than a free-for-all mentality. I lived in a co-op across from shopping areas, overlooking beautiful blossom trees. This was in the neighborhood of Rego Park (bordering Forest Hills) in Queens. It's one of the many well-kept "secret" family oriented neighborhoods where apartment prices are still within reach. The strict co-op rules also result in tenant safety by not allowing unvetted renters or airbnb visitors. Having 24/7 doorman is a luxury as well and we never had any our packages stolen unlike other buildings that we had lived in with constant package thieves. Anyone interested in buying a co-op where a single family home is outside of their budget should look within the Rego Park area, bordering Forest Hills. I am not an RE agent. :)

I grew up here! The Gardens have always been beautiful. There are actually 2 streets that you can park on without a parking permit Ascan Avenue & 71st Avenue (Continental Avenue) are not private streets. Too bad you couldn't see the Tea Garden. It was absolutely magical. Sometime is trying to raise funds to bring it back again. & there was a Mafia kingpin who used to live in the Gardens over on Greenway down from the Church in the Gardens. There's also a mansion over by Deep Dean that's fantastic

That is not true on the parking bit. If you park on Continental from Station Square to the "gate" between Harrow and Groton, you will get booted. Same on Ascan (not sure of boundary there) I have to put a placard from CITG to take my daughter to Scouts .
