No question: the part where Toni Collette discovers what happened, and there’s like a solid 30-45 seconds of her anguished screaming, is bone chilling. Like James said, the director is really good at breaking your guard down over the course of the movie. This is true of Midsommer as well. He alternates different imagery/sounds/music to not jump scare you but to catch you off guard and slightly disturb you. As you try to recover more disturbing things start to appear so that you're never at ease. The genius of it is that everything's so subtle but so effective. Things are just slightly off kilter enough to evoke a response. Taken individually each scene might not be that scary, but it's this constant bombardment of unease using different modalities that creeps under your skin.

You guys literally mentioned the three names I always use when describing my favorite horror directors of the last two decades. James Wan and Alexandre Aja are close seconds.

If you have amazon prime watch the remake of "Susperia". One of the best scenes in a horror movie done with practical effects. Tiny bit seen in the trailer. Loved that movie. Excellent remake. Was lucky to see it in a small theater downtown Edmonton last year. Was a limited theatrical release. 2.5 hours or something as well but well done.

I hope they guy who did the remake of 'Susperia' does something amazing in the practical effects scene with the dance.

My favorite thing about Hereditary is that 95% of the film can be construed as psychological. A part of me wishes it would've been more effective if it were 100%.

Pentatonic - I couldn’t move. I was glued. I actually had the son’s reaction to some extent because it catches you off guard. Having no music, just silence was brilliant.

I can see why this movie is quite divisive, as it's a slow burn that is only really scary if you care about or empathise with the family, but this movie hit the ball out of the park for me. I loved it when I saw it in the cinema, and I loved it when I rewatched it half a year later. It's not scary in the sense that you get scared all the time, but it just keeps on building tension until you wish that it would just have some monster jump at you or something because that would be less exausting. To me true horror is about building atmosphere, immersing you in a world and story, and disturbing you with realistic human suffering instead of cheap gore. Those kind of movie can be very entertaining, but I never find them scary.

Probably the only movie I've ever seen that truly unnerved/scared me and haunted me for a while after. This movie did to me what movies like the Exorcist and Night of The Living Dead did for their generations. Terrifying movie, and while I still can't handle watching it all the way through again and putting myself through that terror, I am so glad to have finally felt that way about . movie and I'm glad it exists

Hereditary was surprisingly good. Haven't seen Midsommar yet but I plan to.
@Radiohead3055 жыл бұрын
During Hereditary I kept thinking to myself "How much more disturbing can this get" while it kept getting more and more disturbing, which was a big reason why the movie is good. During Midsommar I was thinking "Why are you still there, you should have left a while ago" which is ok, but not close to how good Hereditary is.

Dont watch Evil Dead Remake then it will blow your damned mind it has way more scares and it isnt even that good of a movie! This movie seems like a ripoff of it actually because its almost the same premise, a demonic entity coming on earth through blood and sacrifice
