Thanks for this awesome video, I had a great time working on this game (I did most of the AI, pathfinding, some staff combat and some player movement stuff). And you're totally right, the player movement and combat were absolutely the prototype for Jedi Outcast, which we did in 10 months (for that one I did the lightsaber combat, the force powers and the Jedi/Reborn AI). We brought over the player animation system from this game into our Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force engine and lightsaber combat was born. These are some of my favorite game development experiences.

Quake II was really amazing good, and also Quake2XP is worth playing it again today. Mageslayer is an okay game, the top down makes it special because it uses a modified Quake Engine: The Vampire Engine. Hexen was indeed to chaotic to play with all these puzzles, but the graphics and atmosphere are very nice. Hexen 2 was better but still to much puzzle. Heretic I like(d) very much, beautiful colored medievil levels and awesome weapons. Heretic II was indeed one of the best 3rd person hack 'n slash/shooter of the nineties, a shame it was so short. Nice video !

My favorite game from Raven was Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. The single player is one of the best Star Trek FPS games ever made. However, where it really shined was it's multiplayer. Quake 3 gameplay. Star Trek next gen weapons with alt fire, strafe jumping, map making tools.....great stuff. The multiplayer scene started to get pretty thin around 2008, but it's multiplayer is still my number one pick for any multiplayer FPS I've ever played.

The third person view in Heretic 2 was an innovation and had some of the most flawlessly designed animations at the time. But considering that the game was completed in 10 months, there were quite a few elements that were not thoroughly play tested. My critique of the third person was as you mentioned, the inconsistency between the crosshair and where your projectile actually hits. This issue becomes worse when you aim for enemies which are quite a distance away. Another issue was the strafing animation. Potentially this game has a lot of things to offer, but they shipped it out too early. Although I think it was a commercial failure because of the sudden switch to the third person view rather than the mentioned issues, which honestly don't take much away from the game.

I heard about this atrocity but it would be funny to hear your opinion about THIS game. Or atleast do Blade of Severance.
I tried Daikatana recently with fan-made patched and gave up quickly, and I played a dozen of mediocre, bad or average games in my life, but this? Severance - Blade of Darkness is a masterpiece, not some rolling fest in Souls universe...
@ORBrunner5 жыл бұрын
Truly one of those games that i would mind if it would get the sequel or full remake. Gore system and fair but hard balance were the brightest sides of that game. And with all respect for Dark Souls but those aspects are the things that DS series did not achieve even in the last game. The closest in fun of hack and slash (or just slash) the enemies to pieces is RUNE but it is more fast paced than SBoD and less tactical which is another very good game i guess.
@craftyyoungster45285 жыл бұрын
Rune is the one about a viking, right? It's pretty simple compared to SBoD (and at least seems pretty short), nothing complex like Severance's combos and more restricted movement but it's fun. Another simple 3rd person hack and slash game that I really liked is the first Bloodrayne. It's a little bit different with its abundance of guns (that you drop once they are out of ammo) but your main way of dealing with bad guys should still be close combat. The only problem with recommending it is that the first short tutorial chapter is pretty BORING. But once the player is past it, the game improves significantly, in my opinion. It's just so fun to run around playing a half-vampire killing machine that can actually terrify her enemies. It has a pretty nice dismemberment system too and I like how there are many situations where you find different groups of enemies fighting each other. Also, Bloodrayne 2 improves the graphics, adds more depth to the combat and platforming and manages to screw up by ending up way more boring than the first game. It's still bearable and okay to play with some breaks here and there but way worse than its predecessor. Too many stupid repeating puzzles, the platforming feels somewhat stiff and the enemies are way less fun: in the first game, you have the likes of Nazi soldiers with guns pissing their pants when up against the protagonist and you can understand why, in the second game you often get human punks fearlessly trying to punch a night monster lady with their bare hands after she chopped the rest of their buddies up with her arm blades.
