I don't have any experience with the Barkeep, but I do have one of the Rough Riders, with a 6 inch barrel, and I love it. It's actually on of my favorite guns because it is so accurate, it looks good, and it feels good in my hand. Good job, Heritage. Thanks Mixup, it's always a pleasure.

Fun little gun. I ordered and installed a birdhead grip on mine. Also bought a .22 mag cylinder. It makes a fine "kit gun" for snakes with CCI .22 mag shot shells. I use a small flat head screw driver to eject spent cases. It is useful to tighten screws.

It's great to see you fellas finally get your hands on a Heritage revolver! A Rough Rider was the second gun I ever bought. I've had one for years and I've poured well over a thousand rounds of .22 LR, WMR, and even .22 short through it. I did have to send mine in for repairs last year, but they took care of it fairly quickly and it's working just as good as new now! One thing I will mention is that the faux-case hardening on mine came off over time when cleaning it. I'm not sure if it just didn't react well to the gun oil or what. I don't mind it though, as mine looks like it has a patina now. But you might want to be careful about what sort of gun oil you use to clean the Barkeep.

6:46 I own three Rough Rider revolvers and had to bend the front sight on two of them to hit dead center and even then all three differ in height from rear to front sight visual sight picture. No complaints, fixed iron sights on most old west guns need bending and that's it.

I think guys like us have been bending the front sight on single action revolvers ever since Sam Colt invented the revolver in 1836.
@mamolden42143 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, I think mines little off could a pliers at the range get the job done ?
@megatrends3 жыл бұрын
@@mamolden4214 You could but I wouldn't recommend it. You'll mar the metal. If you can usea hard plastic on the plier teeth to protect the surface it would work. I understand doing it at the range is the easiest way. The good news? If the front sight pops out as they are just pressed in at the factory you can put it back on by whatever technique a gunsmith would use for that. If you bend it too much too often the sight will come out. But you should be able to get a couple of bends considering it doesn't have to move much to change your grouping. And make sure, you probably already know, that you bend it in the opposite direction you want the grouping to move. If your grouping is too far left bend it left and the grouping moves right with front sights.

It's an awesome firearm developed in 1865 from Colt for the Army, the first click was the originally the safe carry locking up the trigger with all six rds , not good enough for today's standard, in those days most were single shot. The thing I really like are the custom parts you can get on their website too make it your own, Very Cool ! And affordable way to start your collection, my first of many is on the way. The 6.5 was Army issue, most cowboys carried the 4.75 quicker draw , 3.5 barkeeper's for in your face action, they also have 9" , 12" even 16" . 22mag cylinder come in some packages or can be purchased separately, there are a lot of etched engraving cylinders also available and many grip designs to choose from. Worth noting 22 magnum ballistics reports are as effective as 9 mm up too 50 ft .

I enjoy my Rough Rider and have been looking at the Barkeep for a little while now, so your video is right on time. I recently bought a magnum cylinder from Heritage with an etched Snake design on it. Being a fellow desert rat, you might like the Snake cylinder and they are inexpensive. Taurus owns Heritage and they use their plant in Bainbridge, Georgia. It's always great to see your son in the videos with you. The targets seem to love to fire back at him, lol. He gets down and dirty and seemed to really have that Kentucky windage down on that revolver. LOVE THE BLOOPER!!!!!!!!!!! A few days ago I did receive that Dickinson Shotgun we talked about but it's just been too hot to get out to the range. It feels good for $229 but I'll let you know how it shoots. I did order an adjustable stock they make for it so some of the youngsters can enjoy it a little more. It was pretty cheap ($45) and still holds the extra shells. I'm not sure if you already knew, but I didn't know that Dickinson makes some really nice high end over/under and side by side shotguns besides their inexpensive pump acton shotguns. Stay in the shade. Great video. 👍🏼

I picked up a Barkeep a few days ago. Actually, the day after you released this video. A couple friends were at the gun club on the 24th, shooting their Rough Rider Buntlines, and I'd been thinking about getting one. Well, I went to the gun shop, and they only had the version of the buntline with adjustable fiber optics sights, which I didn't want. I saw the Barkeep there... the one with the Barkeep style wood grips. Just fell in love with it, had to get one. It's actually my second Rough Rider. My old one I got back in 2003, and it came with the magnum cylinder as well. And here's the story about dry fires... After a while with that gun... and untold thousands of rounds through it, it started to malfunction. The malfunctions were because, over the years, I had occasionally accidentally dry fired it. Usually because I had less than 6 rounds left from a box, so I had a couple empty chambers. Well, I'll tell you this. There was absolutely no damage to the cylinder to be seen. The firing pin, however, looked like a total mushroom. I ordered a replacement firing pin, and had it replaced by the gunsmith at Gander Mountain. (That right there tells you this was quite some time back! They discontinued gunsmithing services long before they went out of business.) Other maintenance issues I had with that old gun were all barrel related. The barrel screws in, and is held in place with thread lock. I had to reseat and glue the barrel in once. Years later, I did something stupid and broke the front sight off. I managed to get a replacement barrel off eBay (Heritage won't sell you a barrel, by the way) and replaced it. Now it's a 19 year old gun I paid $100 for, and it's still going after $40 in repairs. Can't complain. (the firing pin was about $5, plus $10 for the repair work. I got the barrel for $25.) I actually put about 300 to 400 rounds through that Rough Rider every time I went to the gun range back in the day. I want to get a second, identical Barkeep. I'd like to use a pair of them to do Grumpy Buckaroo some time in a cowboy action shooting match.

Empty chamber? It has a manual operated hammer block safety, what's the point of that and an empty chamber?
@mixup983 жыл бұрын
I'm just relaying what the owners manual says. I carry one way or the other but not both.

I noticed that the federal punch 22 lr rounds were very similar performance wise with the 22 mag cci hp rounds. So thats an option if you don't have the magnum cylinder.

The bar keep is a interesting little firearm, I think I'd go with the wooden grip. My sister has a heritage rough rider that has a faded flag grip but after a little use the flag started to wear off , that's her only problem she's had with it. I was thinking of getting one , but I picked up a older colt police positive in 32. As always good watching you guys and your both fine shots , have a good day

I noticed on the Heritage website that they have a nice selection of grips for sale and I just might have to get a nice set for mine. I'm jealous...I would love to pick up an old Colt revolver someday and do a fun video on it.

If you're shooing to the left shouldn't you be adjusting the front sight to the "right".?.?
@mixup983 жыл бұрын
Good question Tom. A good rule of thumb to remember when adjusting sights is to move the rear sight in the same direction you want to move the impact. Adjusting and moving the front sight is just the opposite therefore I would move the front sight to the left to move my impact to the right.
@edwardkawecki81013 жыл бұрын
F.O.R.E. Front opposite, rear same.
@edwardkawecki81013 жыл бұрын
Correction F.O.R.S. Front opposite, rear the same. Front if shooting left move sight right. Rear, if shooting left move sight left.
@victorboucher6753 жыл бұрын
Think of it this way: You move the sight to where the bullets hit.

@charlene24003 жыл бұрын
the only 22's I trust enough to keep around are old mechanical action types- revolvers, bolt, or lever guns. This barkeep model reminds me of my H&R 922

@Prepared HomesteadLife I've found Heritage guns need to be "shot-in", to group decent. I have the H&R, JC HIggins 90 (HS double 9), Arminius hw7, 9-shot heritage, Chiappa 1873-22, RG-23, Soviet M1895 Nagant, but sold the Wrangler.

You guys need some snow, they're talking record heat in the N.W. I picked up a RR in January w/ 6 1/2" bbl and it shoots nice and it's accurate, btw, you can dry fire as long as the hammer block is engaged, I ordered the Magnum Cylinder but have not shot any yet, I found some CCI Maxi Mag TNT 30gr for $14.99 for 50 and some Maxi Mag 40gr pointed soft points for $20.00 thanks, I enjoy your videos but don't always comment! 👍🇺🇸

I just bought a Heritage Roughrider. I haven't fired it yet. I looked at a Ruger Wrangler too. I read very good things about it, so I thought what the heck. Its certainly cheap enough.

I also own a Ruger Wrangler and I really like it. The Heritage comes with more options, and a .22 magnum cylinder is also available, but the build quality of the Ruger is better. You can't go wrong with either one.

If you've gotta leave one chamber empty, then what the hell good is that damn hammerblock safety supposed to be? It doesn't stop the hammer from cocking, doesn't stop it from dropping, and apparently it will not stop the hammer from striking the firing-pin either, the one thing I thought it would have to do as to be called a hammerblock safety. Either there's something very wrong with the design here, or they've got one of their lawyers breathing down their neck as they're writing that. For the given length, they could have easily fit an ejector-rod housing on the thing, but I get that they're going for the specific aesthetic of one of Colt's old 1873 variants.

It’s one of those “spirit of the age” issues plaguing the market, kinda like the new fad of magazine disconnects for autoloaders. Everyone is so terrified of lawsuits from accidental discharges that they include 100% redundant safeties, even on weapons which it doesn’t make any sense with, as perfectly demonstrated here. I’m not bothered by it personally - what bothers me more is the people whose stupidity and recklessness, coupled with the other people who are all too eager to sue each other, made stuff like this necessary. At least it’s a safety that can be removed!
@victorboucher6753 жыл бұрын
@@brotherbruno1783 New fad? Had a 1908 Colt's pocket hammerless, Type VI and it had that "Mag disconnect and it was made in 1937. I would say this is more of the social engineering to condition us all to think of the "authorities" as our parents and to accept absurd orders without thinking for our selves.
@brotherbruno17833 жыл бұрын
@@victorboucher675 not to say mag disconnect safeties are new by invention, just that they are a lot more common nowadays. And that might also be part of it, the good Lord knows how much of that is going on too. On the surface, at least, I think the most obvious reason is to avoid legal liability for new and reckless shooters having negligent discharges.
