This is the closest cover to capture the essence of the song. Others tried to sing it in a manly way. This is a song a boy sings, not a man. The vulnerability is at the heart of it.

I saw Peter (Herman) and his recent Hermits last night at the Tulalip Casino in Marysville, WA. They played for only about an hour and 20 minutes, but packed all their hits, as well as a few covers, and a lot of comedy in that time. Peter's a riot! This is the first time I was aware that they covered this song that was made famous by The Left Banke. Interesting how they added a snippet from The Association's "Never My Love" at the beginning and ending of the song.

As was typical of post '67 Herman's Hermits, I expected orchestrated schmaltz, but was pleasantly surprised by the sparse guitar-and-drums arrangement with fantastic vocal harmonies.

And when I see the sign that points one way The lot we used to pass by every day Just walk away Renee You won't see me follow you back home The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same You're not to blame From deep inside the tears that I'm forced to cry From deep inside the pain that I chose to hide Just walk away Renee You won't see me follow you back home Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes For me it cries Just walk away Renee You won't see me follow you back home Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes For me it cries Your name and mine inside a heart upon a wall Still finds a way to haunt me, though they're so small Just walk away Renee You won't see me follow you back home The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same You're not to blame

It's from a canceled LP recorded in 1968 with only covers of hits. It was broadcasted some years ago in a web radio. Don't know why it was never released. It's a pity...
@MJTheDJ19649 жыл бұрын
L Conde in 1968 HH recorded 48 tracks all covers to fulfill it's American obligation to MGM who didn't want to pay royalties to the level that they did before. Some of those Noone sang lead and some others Karl Green and Keith Hopwood sang on. it's my understanding that Karl has a complete collection of these recordings in his archives, but Noone has denied that they all exist. they were all recorded in a very short time period.
@LConde239 жыл бұрын
MJTheDJ1964 Yes, I know. Andrew Sandoval played about 12 or 13 of these songs in one of his radio shows few years ago. You can download it in his website "Come to the Sunshine". I also posted more two songs from these sessions: If I Were A Carpenter and Little Green Apples.

This is a very difficult chord progression and makes vocal harmonies damn~near impossible. THIS version has the CLEAREST, PURERST vocals covered for this tune that I've ever heard. It's a depressing tune, and this is why it was not released.
