I think it would be cool if you put black, grey, purple, or red glass in between the holes at the sides of the bedrock crater to make it seem neater while also having a cool effect. You could even try some sort of a gradient going from the outside rim of the hole to the inside :>

You should make the nether base a huge lava pump (of doom). Like, a pump going from a huge lava lake to the ceiling, with big glass pipes full of lava, going around a central structure. (aka the OMEGA PUMP). It'd take an insane amount of time (maybe too insane), but it would be worth it.
