Concept: Netherite Stock Market. As of right now Netherite is the most valuable mineral, but is not used as a currency anywhere. Alternatively, it could be traded back and forth for diamonds, and the price fluctuates so you could buy low and sell high for a profit.

Both sand and netherite work surprisingly well as currency in minecraft. around the time Sahara was big in season 6 I had this idea of a sand bank (since people used concrete so damn much that season, sand was ALWAYS valuable)

Yes it looks good to start with, but 1 person will come along and trade off sand as better then netherite, sell for a higher price.. Then another does the opposite, for a higher price... After a while you get a back and forth of increases in price from those "trading" the stuff, outside the actual REAL market of what do the hermits NEED and what is each hermit willing to do to help the other. That's what the diamond system is and what money used to be in history

I think it has to do with the fact that people think Bernie is closer to completion. Part of the reason people didn't submit Leafs was because there was a long way to go till all the lights were on. Now, with it being closer to the end, people will get the urge to mass collect leaves. That and the additional "pile" of diamonds.
