I am deeply grateful to you, Josh, for giving voice to Silas Soule, his supporters, and especially to the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. Your narrative was well- researched and fair to all parties. Well done! P.S. My guess is that Squires was in cahoots with Chivington. Think I read something in Roberts' book that tied them together. Could be wrong about that. It's been a while since I read it.

Takes courage to stand up for what you believe in ! Well if that ant a mouth full . I could be wrong but most folks today have no moral compass as they’ve been told get what you can for yourself and dam the rest ! It’s so hard raising children to have a moral compass when the world is still pushing this ideology . Good thing we have you and the hard bunch that rides with you to show a better way. Thanks for all the work you put in to the story time.

Pretty sure I’m related to this family somehow, my family came over on the Mayflower where George Soule signed the Mayflower compact. George was an indentured servant, this story tracks with our families past and though not the same thing it would explain why we wouldn’t take to slavery. At some point an “s” was added to the end of our name, now Soules. And we pronounce it “Soul-Z”. Anyhow love your content! Thanks for all you do!

The worst part about Chivington was that the slaughter was purely for his political aspirations and thinking he'd be lauded as a hero. Custer felt the same way going into Little Big Horn, but things turned out differently.

Great episode. I agree with your take on Sand Creek. By this time, Americans should have known better. It’s definitely a horrible stain on the history of our nation. Was in an American Indian traditions class at Colorado University about 10 years ago. Did a research paper on the founders of Colorado University and found out pretty quickly that, according to the material on their website, Colorado University didn't really want us to know anything about the founders other than them being "like minded pioneers". Brought up the lack of information with the professor; he said, "Oh ya, the actual story isn't a good look for a liberal university." Long story short, the professor directed me to some public records which gave me direct evidence that the founders of Colorado University where members of the Colorado Calvary and where present for, and participated in, the San Creek Massacre. Not only the founders of CU, but also the founders of Denver University, The Rotary Club, and several other Colorado institutions which currently espouse so called "higher virtues" while actively hiding the heinous actions of their founding members. Was born and raised in Colorado; after writing that paper, it's hard for me to walk around these mountains without feeling all the ghosts that haunt them. Great take, love your show, and much love from CO!

Hey Josh, you should do a video on Walter Moses Burton. He was the first black man elected as sheriff (he was also elected as a tax collector) in Fort Bend County, Texas. He was born into slavery in North Carolina in 1840 and sold to a Texas slave owner around 1850. His new slave owner taught him to read, and after slavery ended, he started buying land from his former slave owner. He got heavy into republican politics after he was freed and was elected to the fourteenth legislature in 1874 and served until 1883. After leaving office, he went back to farming, but was active in politics for the rest of his days until he passed in 1913. Thats an insane story. Dude had all the cards stacked against him and was still insanely successful in a time when success wasnt even all that real a thing.. mostly just surviving was seen as a success story. I know you do deep dives on folks, so id love to hear about this man in more detail! Thanks a lot!

We were talking about history last night. Mostly US history and the topic of slavery was part of it. I couldn't remember when we, in Pennsylvania, abolished slavery. So thank you for that! Remember that "Native American" was a term that the Left came up with as a way of calling anyone else living in America a Foreigner... a Foreigner in your own country, contrary to every definition of the word "Native". (If you're born and raised here, you're a native.) Try First Nations or Indigenous, or even the governments LEGAL term of "American Indian". And yeah, the participants of Sand Creek were "low-lived S.O.B.'s!"
@WildWestExtravaganza9 күн бұрын
I’m afraid that’s not true. You can find the term referring to the Indigenous going all the way back to the early 1800s. Don’t think it became very popular until the Civil Rights era.
