I live on the isle of Wight where tory voters come to retire. My vote is thrown away EVERY ELECTION because the incoming retired outnumber everyone else. I am sick of non representation. PR is the future us voters need. MP's don't want it, all the more reason to have it! GET THE TORIES OUT NOW!

@davebaker8362 No actually. Yes Reform would get a few MPs, but so would the Greens, but more important is centrists like the Lib Dems would have considerably more MPs, thus the balance shifts to the centre. All the highest functioning governments world wide have a form of PR. Not an opinion, a statistical reality. For those saying "but the Netherlands" Wilders may have the most seats there, but he's unlikely to be able to form a government, and even if he can, the concessions he'll have to make to do so will essentially hobble him. Besides, fptp has consistently shown itself to be unfit for purpose.

I can't praise Carol Vorderman enough for all that she's doing highlighting the injustices facing this country. She's becoming embolden in spite of the attempted character assassinations by the right wing and Conservatives and really cutting across to members of the electorate who would not normally be too involved in politics. Always a pleasure to see you featured, especially your conversations with James O'Brien.

I moved to Scotland nearly 20yrs ago, and for years I didn't voted, I just watched and learn the difference between Scotland and England and looked into each political party. I then decided to support SNP, however, since 2016 I haven't voted. The last time I voted was for the Scottish referendum and this dumbasses voted to stay in the UK despite knowing that they will be ripped out of the EU by the English a few years later. I, as an immigrant could see that! Then, of course coming from an EU country, I, despite paying my taxes, being forced to do jury duty - what I despise, wasn't allowed to vote in the EU referendum. Looking how things progress and considering right now I'm lucky working on a 18 month project where I get paid very well, 2025 is pretty much the definite year I will leave the UK.

There was a similar incident with the same guy in the same pub at around that time regarding his very pro Brexit views. A few years down the road, tories have been caught with their hands in the till & it's becoming increasingly clear that Brexit is a dead parrot. I don't understand why it has to be a perceived authority figure making these claims before people will listen. All you've got to do is look at the evidence & connect the dots, but I suppose then they'd have to admit they were wrong. About all sorts of things. Something about celebrity status seems to shock some people out of their echo chambers & start to listen I guess.

I Was saddened and shocked by Keir Starmer crediting Margaret Thatcher as a leader who effected ‘MEANINGFUL CHANGE’ in the Sunday Telegraph.Has that IDIOT forgotten the damage she caused to industrial communities such as mining communities? These sort of comments are why there are people who won’t vote Labour because the believe Starmer is ‘TORY LITE’! Dozens of different parties fighting like two cats in a bag for weeks & sometimes months ,trying to get laws through their books ,can you imagine that here ,our politics are bad enough without all the pain involved in that mess ?. And as for Vorderman - she was a rabid Tory ,until she thought the Labour party would put her on a clearer track to a Damehood or a bigger part in Labour"s day to day affairs - like Lineker just another attention seeker after a career downturn ?. @@yorkiegilly4355so we should let a minority-elected government act as a dictatorship by giving them an 80 seat majority from a minority (43.6%) vote. Bring on the debates and what you call fighting. The buggers can argue until they find a sensible solution and in the meantime will do less damage. FPTP is simply undemocratic because not all votes are equal.
@scooby1992
@scooby1992 8 ай бұрын
@@davidmcculloch8490 Exactly , in so many seats a vote for any other party other than the incumbent is wasted. If I needed any other reason to support PR it was when the tories scrapped the election of Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners from being under an AV system to back under FPTP . there is only one reason they have done this and that is because there are generally ( Reform aside ) two or three different parties of the centre and left fighting each other for many of the same voters where as the tories by and large have the right wing vote sown up . The biggest fear I have is over the vote for Mayor of London , a predominantly left leaning , progressive city . The voters from centre and left have a choice between Sadiq Khan for Labour , the Greens and Lib Dems . If George Galloway and or Jeremy Corbyn stand as left wing independents it complicates matters further and could see the diabolical Tory Candidate Susan Hall win with as little as 30% of the vote .

I was first able to vote in 1979, and have voted in every GE since. In my life I’ve moved around a lot, and in every GE I’ve found myself in a “safe seat” one way or the other. Therefore, not once has my vote actually mattered. Not once. And the same for the majority of people in this country, while the decision on the future of the country is determined by a couple of hundred thousand people who happen to live in “swing seats”, rather than the millions who don’t. That doesn’t sound like a functional democracy to me.

The proper loony Tories don't have another right wing party to vote for so they win more often.

I live in The Netherlands and we have proportional representation, and I can tell you that PR isn’t utopia, although preferable to FPTP. We just voted in the national elections and we had 26 parties to choose from. The ballot paper is bigger than the ballot booth, unfolding and folding back the ballot paper takes more time than filling the box in front of the right candidate with the red pencil. We elected 15 parties in the Second Chamber of parliament. Forming a coalition government is a lengthy process because of that. I think a mix of both systems is a better system.

Two caveats regarding PR. Firstly, the Labour Party has always opposed it and has to be brought on board to support it. Secondly, the form of PR that is adopted need to be explained clearly to the electorate and needs to be a form of PR that really ensures every vote counts. Last time 10 years ago, when the Lib Dems tried to introduce PR, it was such a bad form of PR and so poorly presented and explained that the electorate rejected it.

There has to be some sort of change because at the moment politicians can just lie and lie and get away with it. Whereas a party can come up with a set of policies at election time, what must be avoided is someone being elected on a single platform and then if elected being able to pontificate on all sorts of subjects

Why isn't anyone truly making an effort to convince non-voters to rethink their stance? Why isn't anyone trying to understand why they don't vote? And why isn't this then showed on prime time TV?

The 2 main arguments of non voters are quite valid. 1/ there's no real difference in the parties 2/ my vote doesn't count under fptp in a safe seat Address both those issues and I suspect voting would increase

The UK's political system is outdated and fundamentally flawed, as such it's not fit for purpose. Unfortunately the reality is there seems to be little support amongst the parties to actually drive forward meaningful change. Hell, as it stands now the two main parties of the UK represent far right and right. Carol's voice is one sorely and desperately needed within the UK and we need more like her with the reputation and platform to drive for positive change.

Max you're spot on about the tactical voting. I would love to vote greens. Now that i can't vote for them as a second choice id have to vote labour. This pains me but the tories need to go.

Labour need to stop being pricks to the other parties on the same side of the politican spectrum as them. They should be trying to earn tactical votes from them rather than constantly denigrating them and then trying to play the guilt game "if you vote for SNP, Plaid Cymru, Greens, (whatever), you're just helping the Tories stay in power". I want to get rid of the Tories, and I would definitely vote tactically to get rid of the twat in my constituency, but Labour just keep finding ways to make it difficult for me to morally make that choice.

Completely agree with you.They should be getting the likes of the Lib Dem’s, the SNP, the Greens and the rest on side to oust the Tories.I’m afraid the problem is the leader,Keir Starmer.He made a comment in todays Sunday Telegraph, crediting Margaret Thatcher as a leader who effected ‘MEANINGFUL CHANGE’. What is Starmer trying to do when he praises Thatcher...DRIVE AWAY POTENTIAL LABOUR VOTERS?! This is the reason why people don’t trust him, and say he’s ‘TORY LITE’. While I too want those Tory shysters out of number 10, Starmer does himself no favours praising one of the most hated Prime Ministers in British politics.

And replace the Lords with an elected second chamber. That would mean discredited has-beens like David Cameron would not be bunged a peerage in order to enable them to sit in Sunak's cabinet.

The message about getting rid of First Past the Post becomes ever louder, which is encouraging for reformers like myself who have been campaigning on this issue for decades - what was once a ripple of discontent has now turned into a veritable tsunami of rage - we need to make electoral reform (as an integral element among general Constitutional Reform) THE number one doorstep issue - every single time anyone from a political party engages with you, the first thing you utter should be something akin to: "Do you endorse a fully proportional voting method to elect Westminster MPs - if not, why not and you can forget my vote until you do" If everyone does this, change will come, much quicker than we ever thought possible!
