The worse thing about this story, in my opinion, is that Sanctuary was introduced and destroyed all at the same time. Sanctuary is a really interesting idea, and could possibly be an on-going series in and of itself.

I don't really understand why Lois would _have_ to publish the video confessions. Wouldn't that be a violation of patient confidentiality? Aren't there laws requiring the consent of the people in the videos? Wouldn't they be under police jurisdiction? Journalists may have a duty to keep the public informed about things that are happening and affect them but it's not their job to dispense confidential information that's crucial evidence to an ongoing investigation. This whole thing feels like a really dumb excuse to kill off a bunch of people just to make a murder mystery. Very much not my kind of story.
@TheAntiSanta
@TheAntiSanta 5 жыл бұрын
Lois publishes an article about Sanctuary. She doesn't post any of the actual videos or what was talked about in them. It's only about what Sanctuary is and what they do there (and also where it is, which is kind of fucked up and shouldn't be included, I don't know what they were thinking when they put that part in there). She does this, because she's sure if she doesn't at least acknowledge the existence of the facility, whoever is sending her this stuff, will send it to some other Reporter, and that person will just post all of the Videos Online and ruin/reveal the identities of all these heroes.
@shelinam
@shelinam 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would have been a violation of patient confidentiality. There are only four legally allowed reasons to break confidentiality: suspicions of 1) child or 2) adult dependent abuse, 3) suicidal or 4) homicidal concerns.

A few problems with the analysis that I want to bring up: 1. A lot of people agree with your notions regarding Wally and hope, but that is on a meta sense and is NOT something that would be brought up in the fiction itself, which happens during a flashback. 2. Speedsters have the ability to process information much faster than an ordinary person and an overload shouldn't have happened. It's how Speedsters can run around without hitting things and read books really quick, AND it's how Reverse Flash was able to temporarily survive a bullet to the head after the Flashpoint movie. 3. Wally might be the strongest Flash, but the comic argues this by stating that Speedsters restrain the Speed Force in their bodies and that slipping up causes the SF to lash out. That is not how Speedsters work; Wally's outburst is built on bullshit. 4. Some of the confessionals are played up as jokes and based on their subject matter, they REALLY shouldn't be. 5. They explicitly chose characters to kill so that most were minor enough that people wouldn't demand their return. There's a real possibility that Roy's death will be the only one that gets reversed.

I think Drake and Dylan made the timeline a little more confusing than it needed to be when they said there were two timelines. Although, it's still pretty complicated and I hate that they saved the wrap up until the last couple of panels. The way I see it, after rereading a bit, is that it isn't separate timelines so much as it is the same timeline intersecting itself. The only paradox that exists is the bootstrap paradox, in which one event creates itself in a never ending loop so it can never be determined where the loop originated. ---------Truncated version of events to make the list that follows easier to understand: Wally jumps forward five days where he meets an older version of himself > Wally jumps back 5 days > Wally waits 5 days where he becomes the older version of himself and greets the younger version after that version jumped five days > After younger Wally jumps back five days, Wally continues in the normal timeline as the only Wally. ---------So the events are as follows: 1) Wally kills everyone then sets up the chambers to trick Harley and Booster in a panic. 2) Wally jumps forward in time, seemingly at random. He pops out to see another Wally (henceforth referred to as "Old Wally"). Wally then has the intent to kill Old Wally and use his body to decorate the crime scene then taking his place waiting to get killed by a younger Wally. 3) Before he can do any of this however, he gets interrupted by Blue and Gold and the Dynamicer Duo. It is at this point that Old Wally reveals that he knew all of this would happen. Old Wally knew they'd be interrupted and that Booster Gold would give the speech. And so rather than killing Old Wally, the plan becomes confusing the trail enough for Wally to get the word out on Sanctuary. 4) Following Booster Gold's suggestion, they jump forward several centuries, clone Old Wally using future tech, then take that lifeless clone and drop him off as the dead Wally from the beginning of the story. 5) Wally then does that and waits five days as he slowly leaks information about Sanctuary to Lois and finds that rose. Five days pass and Wally is now Old Wally where he greets Young Wally fresh from having just killed people and panic jumping forward by five days where Old Wally tells young Wally everything that just happened above. 5+) And now a lot of the stuff, like forging the crime scene is where the bootstrap paradox comes in. Because while they explain the forging was to buy Wally time, he also does it because the Old Wally did it and he needs to keep the time stream constant, hence bootstrap paradox, because the idea seemingly has no origin, it just exists because of itself.

I really loved the premise but was so disappointed in the execution. I wish it focused on the psychological trauma involved in being heroes. It could have been an excellent way to delve into (and demystify) the therapeutic process and the heroes’ responses to the “treatment.” Instead, the convoluted resolution took away the true potential of the story. I personally would have preferred focusing on just the Justice Leaguers and the Trinity pitching the idea of the Sanctuary to the rest of the team, with the JL serving as guinea pigs in a sense to determine the efficacy of the endeavor. As with any intervention (or product, for that matter), there needs to be evidence that it works before it is disseminated to the public. As it was, it was a wasted opportunity to explore the concerns about confidentiality and privacy while also addressing the need for social support. The system as it was presented was horribly set up. An AI may know or have the data to say the right things but there’s immense value to the human interaction in therapy, individual or in group. Furthermore, the simulations are just another way to re-traumatize the heroes without appropriate processing of the experience. All things considered, I think the focus on Wally was a good idea. I just wish it was for the right reasons (i.e., dealing with loss of his family and tragedy of being erased from people’s memories.) There was so much to explore there but was merely glossed over, and that is the greatest shame of all.

Past Wally goes to the Future, to kill Future Wally. And then he goes right back to the Past, to put the Future Wally's Body in the crime scene. Then he goes through the motions. That's Past Wally's Crazy Murder Plan, though. Booster's is replacing the the Future Wally's Body with a Future Double, and the real Future Wally goes to Jail. Past Wally still goes back to the past and does everything after the massacre all over again.

Heroes in Crisis treated the legacy of Wally West's character like garbage. Wally has been a hero since he was a pre-teen. Under no circumstance, would he ever lose control of his powers to the point of killing people. He was is one with the Speed Force. He reacts in incriminates of time that are one millionth of a second. He would also never fake a murder, even his own. This story simply shows a complete misunderstanding of the character and feels like an attempt to just wipe Wally from the board.

Every problem I have with this story goes back to every problem I've had at least since Flashpoint/the New 52, if not Infinite Crisis onward, with DiDio and crew's darkening of the DC Universe and taking all of the fun out of the DC Universe that drew me to it as a kid (as fun as a story where Batman hunts down a killer of the homeless with gold coins can be mind you) and kept me invested in the DCU for most of my life. Killing beloved characters because DiDio doesn't like them, trying to be more like Marvel instead of doing what makes DC great, and finding all the writers to push his vision and undo Rebirth' s attempt to fix what he did wrong.

Alright, so, I read mostly Marvel comics, and I haven't gotten into DC because it feels too complicated for me. I know, it's kinda hypocritical seeing as Marvel's continuity history is also complex, but still I least have nostalgic attachment to them. I know a base level of DC though, I've grown up with Batman and Superman, seen a lot of the shows and movies and have read Flashpoint. Now, watching this video without having read much DC comics left me surprised; the way this was explained still made me feel like the continuity was confusing, BUT I actually want to go out of my way to understand it better now. You've made me quite interested in the stories of how Wally West returned, and what's been happening in the past few years to the Trinity, Booster Gold, Harley Quinn and so on. So I might be going more out my way to experience more DC stuff, as it's been recommended by others to me. Thanks guys, looking forward to hopefully more of this series.

I'm pretty interested in reading it, honestly. I want to see the more psychological parts of the characters and hear more from Lagoon Boy and others.

TopHatBat, don’t, most of the phycological confessionals are out of character, sure there’s Laggon boy, but he’s really just talking about what happened at the beginning at Titans (2009)

Wow, my only other exposure to this story line was my friend who was one of the people angry that wally killed every body. So I was led to believe that was a bad thing, that being said listening to this i think the major fault of this was wally killing his other timeline hisself and framing Booster and Harley. I think i will try and read the trade when it comes out in libraries.

I binge-read all issues before the last one released, and wow, what a way to drive so many nice ideas against a wall at 300 mach. Biggest problem definitely was that whole time travel crap, and Wally framing Harley and Booster for seemingly no reason. If it weren't for that, and he would have simply killed those heroes accidentally because he had a mental breakdown it would have been fine imo I am excited for Flash Forward though and hope that King fixes the problem this whole series had. DC really should stop butchering stories because reasons.

Flashpoint does involve time travel, but in the story (the original, not the CW version or anything), time travel is only revealed as the creation of the Flashpoint universe at *the end* of the story. So it’s more of a “what if” or “elseworlds” story than a time travel story.

The only quality Heroes In Crisis maintains is the art, its blindingly gorgeous. The writing is atrocious. Its everything that is wrong with Tom Kings Batman run, mischaracterization of established characters & continuity to fit a morose, nihilistic contemplation on what ultimately is Kings own fascination with suicide, death, & mental illness. His heart is in the right place, and Sanctuary as an idea is novel and interesting but its all ruined in service of a half baked plot that makes no sense emotionally or narratively. Between this & him getting “removed” from his 100 issue Batman run on issue 75 it is apparent that King is not good at dealing with continuity and ongoing storytelling. The man is a brilliant writer of contained mini-series like Mister Miracle & Vision, but I for one think HiC is the final nail in the coffin when it comes to King and ongoing comics work. I stopped buying Batman after issue 50 because I couldn’t entertain some of the bad ideas being put forth in a story that jerked its audience around for terrible narrative reasons. Theres a reason the Hulk book outsold Batman this year & frankly its because of Kings writing.

I had an idea of the events of Heros in Crisis through fandom osmosis (I'm a Robins gal, I don't pay much attention when there's no Nightwing or Red Hood to keep me interested). Though I feel like the impression I got was a bit skewed, since I thought that the plotline was more that Wally had, like, gone crazy and killed everyone ON PURPOSE, which from this explanation doesn't seem to be the case? I suppose this way it's less of a character assassination. Once again, the impressions I got from other fans was that this had butchered Wally's character and, while the "I went crazy and did a bad thing even though I'm a good guy" plotline is a bit meh overall and overused in order to make hero character do bad things for drama, it's at least satisfactorily built up to here. I would probably go a bit loony toons too if I was stuck in an alternate timeline where everything was different... Also, how dare you remind me of the three Jokers, you bastards.

ALSO, also, I would KILL for a series based entirely around, like, the Justice League in therapy sessions talking through their issues. Just me?? It could be so awesome! Like, have it run concurrently to the other comics, so characters can discuss things happening in their lives in "real time". Batman talking about being heartbroken after Selina left him at the altar, Superman discussing the troubles with being a father and the usual loneliness with being one of the last of his species, Wonder Woman complaining about the others being big whiny babies *cough*. There's a lot of potential there, I feel like.

I like the idea of this format but it needs more structure to set itself apart from ComicPop’s Back Issues. Maybe establish the premise for the book first then a round of back & forth questions followed by a retelling of the book & a response from the non reader? Turn it into almost a survey to see if the person likes or dislikes the book. Also I think you should have 1 person that likes the book & 1 that doesn’t explain why they feel that way to represent both sides cause you were both quite positive in comparison to others that had serious issues with HiC. In all great ideas, cant wait to see more. Cheers.

I was really very excited about the story and the way Tom King writes. However, only up to and including issue seven... After that it was only half-hearted time travel bull#%! For usually I like time travel stories. But here it was just confusing and illogical. And Wally definitely deserved better. And Booster and Harley too...
