I can get behind him accidentally killing peeps. I can get behind him being traumatised and depressed over the unexistence of his family and kids. I can get behind him releasing the info of all the heroes, with blurred faces, to show the world that heroes struggle too. What I can't get behind, is him setting up this elaborate murder mystery, framing two innocents, seemingly being a master criminal that can dupe both Barry AND Batman, the WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE, running so fast to grab the data bits to hack his way into watching all of the deleted confessions,,, it's just too much. It makes no damn sense, if he really did do this from trying to rectify his mistakes. Wally is a good person. Even if he loses control, he won't just run away from this. Time traveling into 5 days in the future to kill his future self? What would that accomplish?? If you're already messing around with time travel, why not just go BACK in time to stop yourself from killing everyone??? It's a hacked explanation over the scenario, like Tom King laid the groundworks for the mystery but didn't know how to wrap it up when going over it. At least that would explain the alternative covers and extra issues needed - King didn't go in with the exact killer in mind, so he wrote himself into a corner. At least, that's just my theory. As for the series itself, honestly it's a chore to read through. King's pretentious half/one-word sentences and the repeated use of this fake chirpiness in the confessions was especially aggravating. It made sense in Vision, not so much in Batman and Heroes in Crisis. I get King's schtick is to break down characters and explore their philosophy, but honestly it really feels like he's writing about the same character when writing monologues. Vision's internal thinking felt very similar to Scott Free's, feeling very similar to Batman's, feeling very similar to Wally's now, especially when talking about depression, suicide, self-punishment, if they can ever be happy, or the nature of existence. As for good points, the art is gorgeous. My only complaint is that it can feel very static, like there's no motion to the panels at all. And it doesn't help that the framing of these panels makes characters barely move at all. Like, they push out two different sentences from the same character into two panels, with the only change being a slightly different facial expression. Did I mention I hate most of the confessional parts? To me at least, it slows down the pacing considerably, and it makes each issue feel like a lot of fluff was stuffed in with progressions in plot and characters. At least that's just my thoughts. To me, the killer's reveal made some sense until it completely didn't, King's writing is pretentious and dialogue feels very forced, and the art is stunning but extremely static, with unnecessary panels bogging the pace of the story considerably.

I'm thinking I agree with you like 95% about the bulk of this. Great layout and rundown in this post come a very sensible reasoning. Yes, I agree, the last half of Wally in this book seems wholly out of character.

THIS. THIS is how I felt about his Batman run. I liked it at the beginning, but the monotone, robotic and repetitive dialogue with the characters was aggravating to read. I hated the whole “Bat” and “Cat” shtick. I enjoyed Tom King’s Omega Men, Vision, and Mr. Miracle; but at some point, his writing became very same-y and dry. There’s neat stuff, but it all seems very repetitive.

The whole story is based on actions that are so contrived It's just not coherent and this story pissed off fans. I REALLY hope they undo these deaths because it just feels like a random. It could've been anyone. I think it's a GREAT idea to show how PTSD effects people like Superheroes and what it makes them do. BUT! Heroes in crisis handled it terribly. If the story was simpler and not based on a murder mystery, then I wouldve preferred that. If wally had the ability to time travel and didnt care about consequences. He wouldve stopped himself from ever losing control regardless of the consequences.

So just a recap, last issue: Wally poses bodies, jammed teeth down another heroes throat, framed 2 other innocent people for murder, staged a crime scene, and placed his own body next to Roy’s cause it, “Felt right”? Seems TOTALLY in character to me.... If The Flash’s alter ego was Ted Bundy maybe. What stinks is that it’s going to be an Ant-man situation with this. No matter how much time passes, no matter how many retcons occur, Hank Pym is always the Ant-man who is the wife beater in people’s eyes. The same kind of stigma will always follow Wally West now because of this dumpster heap of a story. He’ll always be the, “Killer Flash” now who poses bodies.
@Junya01
@Junya01 5 жыл бұрын
Nah, there's something extra dirty about domestic abuse, sexual abuse, and abuse involving kids. It's why Hank Pym is the wife beater hero after all these years. At least King made it so Wally accidentally killing everyone is sympathetic, and he glosses over the details in staging the crime scene in issue 8. The only time we see its grim reality is with the first issue I believe, which most fans won't remember much of. This whole series is dumb. I don't know why King decided to go in this without a killer in mind, because it's quite clear he laid the groundworks for a mystery, but he wrote himself into a corner.
@drummerelite

Josh O Him being a killer is accidental, sure, but him posing bodies and framing 2 other people for murder was no accident. Him killing people won’t be remembered as the main headline really, but him posing his comrades like dolls in a dollhouse might be though. @@drummerelite I have to say that I highly doubt this will stick with him like a haunting past, considering peeps are already numb to vanilla murder in fiction. As for him playing with the bodies, again even I forgot what the fake crime scene looked like, and King didn't focus on it in issue 8 to make Wally seem more sympathetic. As for examples, remember Hal Jordan's parallax days? When you think of Hal Jordan, it's green lantern. Not scourge of the universe, killer of millions. They even retconned his insanity by saying Parallax the fear entity infected him. They can easily do a similar thing to Wally, maybe Dr. Manhattan manipulated Wally's mind while he was away or while he was in sanctuary, or better yet, Wally wasn't the one to really kill those people - think about it, when was the last time aside from this a flash ever lost control and made a a speedforce thunderbomb? Its never happened before. A few years down the line, they can say Doc Manhattan was observing Wally and decided to experiment, messing with the chemicals in his brain, forcing him to constantly remember his unexisted family, that he oversurged Wally's connection to the speedforce that it lost control, or even that Wally wasn't responsible for killing everyone - the thunderbomb was really just Doc Manhattan trying to trick Wally into thinking he did it. I highly doubt King will bring in Doc Manhattan this late in the game, but as long as King doesn't absolutely trash Wally further next issue, future writers can easily retcon this trainwreck.

@@Junya01 To be fair to Hank Pym he didn't really abuse Janet, he was having a pyschosis fit ( no one knew he suffered from schizophrenia(I think) and depression at the time) and Janet approached him and he slapped her while turning around. Instead of getting him help the Avengers ostricized and alienated him causing him to sink deeper into his psychotic state and to do an ever increasing series of stupid things to try and get the Avengers to like him again. He only ever hit her that one time and he wasn't even fully aware of it.

I'll be honest be honestly the only reason I'm keeping up with this story is to see how it ends, so maybe I'm bias. I'm okay with Wally accidentally killing the other heroes. I'm okay with him leaking the information. I'm even okay with him killing the other/future Wally as a way to punish himself. I'm not okay with Wally framing Harley and Booster Gold at all. I think Wally framing them is an interesting idea. I also think i would have had less of a problem with it if this series didn't concentrate so much on murder mystery portion and actually concentrating more on wally showing us his though process, how he is coping with what he did, what exactly he's hoping to accomplish by leaking the information, or why he didn't go to one of the other heroes after he killed the people as sanctuary ( I can understand him not wanting to go to Barry after the events of Flash War but why not Dick, Donna, Iris or Clark). Overall I dislike this story and i don't think issue 9 will change that, I think the story is an interesting concept but the execution is flawed. Also, Sorry if there are any misspelling or grammar errors I'm using speech to text and I'm not exactly sober.

Dope, unfortunately I agree with Andy, I can believe he lost control but wouldn't frame the others especially since he wants to share the secrets to show that everybody isn't alone, but by framing Harley and Booster Gold he's making them experience more pain and loneliness. Kinda goes against the whole hope for everyone schtick....

Wally if he accidentally killed people I think he would’ve had a mental breakdown probably hide the bodies and isolated himself, blaming himself while thinking of ways to fix his mistake being too ashamed to tell anyone If the killer had to be Wally I would’ve like them to find out quick he was the killer cuz Barry seen how lightning effects the body and narrowed it down and the rest of the story was trying to find and help Wally before he had another mental break and repeats what he’s done and Barry having to come to terms he’s failed Wally and should’ve done more to help him find his family and that be what a Wally West Flash spin off would be about Wally finally finding his family or at least his kids Cuz since titans split up and since flash war I’ve been feeling dc has forgot Wally was suppose to be what brought the pre flashpoint events back and ignored him until Heroes in crisis which I’m surprised people have read up to the recent issue I dropped off quick

Maybe you should blame Dan didio for your feeling that DC has forgotten what Wally West was brought back for, which was to solve the pre and post Flashpoint New 52 thing. I've heard it in a lot of corners of the comic community that things haven't exactly been great after Geoff John's stepped down from his executive role and other people took over the jobs he was doing safeguarding some characters.

I don't follow Wally so I don't know how bogus they did him from a narrative standpoint. BUT! As a story of mental health and suicide, it is a common trope that whoever we lost feels alone despite the fact that everyone around them feels light and love every minute. Take Robbin Williams as an example. When everyone associates you with hope or whatever, but all you feel is pain and isolation the cognitive dissonance can be life shattering. Add to that the fact that he let go of his self control for just a moment(hours in flash time) and killed a group of allies, at least one of his close friends among them, and he was just done with it. He paniced at that point. It's a horrific story but one that plays out in real life all to often. I think all the readers who are angry are having a very valid response similar(if on a smaller scale) to those who have list someone in real life. ALTHOUGH, it is weird that he doxed everyone in sanctuary in order to validate his trauma.

just one nitpick about the way Wally time-traveled. He couldn't time travel through time with the Speed Force anymore. After the events of Flash War, they were unable to do so. Though Booster was able to do this with his tech. After Wally put Booster in the VR, who would experiencing the death of everyone by Harley, Wally used Boosters Tech to travel back and forth the kill himself of the future to frame Harley and Booster. it's just a small detail, but it really bothers me that everyone thinks they could use the Speed Force for this while that option is no longer there after breaking the Force Barrier(s)...

Im with Benny on this one. I think Wally had a complete mental breakdown and was not himself throughout the story, that he was rationalizing with a panicked, fractured thought process that wouldn't allow him to fully connect the right things to do. I also read someone else's review and they were like it's Manhattan that's messing with everything, manipulating Wally and others into doing all this crap. Either way, I still have faith in my boy Wally, and he will collect himself somehow and he'll always be my hero

the problem is not that he had a complete breakdown, but EVERYTHING ELSE. this is not how you deal with a mental issue. talking with a camera, revealing your problems to everyone, not seeking PROFESSIONAL HELP. this comic is atrocious, not because it made wally into a killer, but because it worked REALLY HARD to show that mental issue is a disease that cant be treated, and the best you can do is tell others, so they can avoid you.

I doubt Benny would ever see this but I’ve got this theory and it could make for a cool whiteboard video, so in the spider man trailers mysterio looks like a hero ,and if you’ve ever read a comic book you know that this must be some sort of trick ,mysterio has always been a villain, and pretty much the entire internet is in agreement that mysterio is going to be the villain of the film, well my theory is that what if mysterio is actually a hero, that they pull a similar twist to the skrull in captain marvel , could be an interesting twist on the character, the only think is I don’t think marvel would pull the same twist twice in the same year, but idk this could at least be cool to think about

DC killed hope once before. Black Adams wife that sent him on a rampage. The difference is, BA was a past villain trying to make good, Who relapsed due to his wife’s death. Wally is a hero who would not falsely accuse another if it would put the accused in mortal jeopardy. Harley stabbing Booster? Booster thinking he was a killer? That only works if Wally had the Jokers version of a bad day... in which case, that’s not only not Wally... that can never again be Wally.

The best thing I can say about Heroes in Crisis is that it's trying. It feels like Tom King knows what he's talking about, just maybe editorial shenanigan's got in the way of the story he wanted to tell. There are good moments in the book, Superman's speech shows what King wanted to say about PTSD and it is really good. Also this might be subjective, but I actually do like the confessionals from the characters my favorite being Gnarrk. There just sitting down and talking about their problems and trauma. I like it when stories do this and get to the core of its characters. I know that's not the case for everyone, since not everyone likes every character, but it's an attempt to humanize this figures if you ask me. That being said, I do admit that Heroes in Crisis is not a good story. Those confessionals do drag down the pace of the story (you can skip them and it won't effect the main narrative) and the one with Hal Jordan asking what is willpower is just dumb. I can by Wally killing everyone, but everything after that is a big no. Heroes in Crisis just has to much going on in the narrative to work and I feel that if the mystery was dropped and instead focused on Wally dealing with the consequences of his actions and coping with his trauma it would have been really good.
@marcosdheleno
@marcosdheleno 3 жыл бұрын
i disagree, it feels like he heard about it, but didnt actually bothered to looking into it deeper than a quick google search. not only did the story go out of its way to show that mental issues cant be helped(even going as far as making most people who did seek help died because of it), but it ended up by saying "you should seek help, it wont help, and it will probably leak, since even superheroes couldnt keep theirs secret". finally, what they had was NOT help, not every mental issue can be solved by talking about it. its the reason why shrinks and psychiatrists are 2 COMPLETELY DIFERENT professions.

It’s clear what this is all meant to do. Dan DiDio (The DC editor) clearly hates Wally West and wanted to get rid of him. He tried in the New 52 but everyone lost their minds. So Geoff Johns brought him back in Rebirth. Dan couldn’t just erase or kill him again, so instead he decided to use character assassination and he had Tom King make Wally do something that would stain the character in the way that Hank Pym was stained by what he did to Janet Van Dyne.

The reasoning behind revealing everything was also ridiculous and framing innocent ppl? Garbage. They're gonna blame this on the batman who laughs or something just like marvel did with hydra cap and the cosmic cube. Boring. Sacrificing great character traits and values for a sub-par story and shock value. This story had so much potential and Tom King is the new Nick Spencer.. which is not a good thing. I think that people are so quick to dismiss all that Wally has lost since his arc in Rebirth began. He lost a life - wife, kids, friends. He was a hero that everyone forgot. PTSD and depression often lead a person to do things that other may deem out of character. Wally made a mistake and, in trying to fix it, made more mistakes as we all often do. He needed time so he could let the world know what he had done (and he may have felt like he should have died with all those people he accidentally killed). Wally West was and is a problem solver, but between the loss of everything and speed force shenanigans, he couldn't fix what he had done. I'm not justifying it but I also see him reacting to a situation rather than plotting the demise of Sanctuary. We all feel alone and that loneliness can be overwhelming. Grief can make us do terrible things. The heroes we look to save us suffer more than the regular person because they walk into the line of fire, into danger willingly and repeatedly. That theme is repeated over and over through out the book when you see the 9-panel confessions (of which Batman's broke my heart the most). No, I don't think a "sane" (sorry, not the right word but I left my thesaurus at home) Wally would do what he did. But a Wally suffering from depression an PTSD might. Sadly, I think Wally's troubles are just beginning...

I am with Andy in that I can see this as plausible with Wally up to a point. I definitely agree with it being a PTSD hallucination where he mistakes the heroes for enemies and accidentally kills them. I can then see him faking his death and sending out the secret recordings as a means to cover up everything due to his immense shame and anger at himself and the universe for how messed up he has become. An unintentional byproduct of releasing the videos would be shedding a light on the mental turmoil and coping struggles heroes endure and the world having to acknowledge his trauma, but he wouldn’t be thinking about that. What I cannot see as part of his character is framing anyone- especially a fellow comrade, even if it is someone as unhinged as Harley. Personally I hope this eventually becomes an official Elseworlds story because the idea is actually really interesting. It’s just if this is in cannon I don’t know how they can redeem Wally anytime soon.

The guy on the right, Andy I think his name was, is correct. I'd even argue that Wally West would NOT have revealed everyone else's secret to the world, cause where as before they had Hope, and he KNOWS they needed Hope, he just took that hope away. You don't look at someone for hope, realise they are suffering too and go "Wow, I can relate to that. I guess everything is better now." That's not how it works. You realised "Oh my god, even our heroes can fail. There is no hope. One day they are going to snap, they are going to die cause of their trama. There is no hope anymore, we're just waiting to die." And that is my biggest problem. Heroes are meant to be icons, someone to trive to be, to improve yourself, to better yourself. Making the heroes 'Mortal', 'Hurt', and 'Suffering Mental Issues', does 3 things. First, It removes them from being the best of the best in humanity and earthlings. Secondly, It brings in fear, that at any point they too can snap and go crazy. Here in reality, people snap all the time and usually at most kill 1-2 people, maybe their family and sometimes worse like serial killers, but they are all mortal. A Citizen, a Cop, or other adult person has the power to defend themselves and stop these people. But in a Superhero world, no random person on the street is going to stop Superman, or Batman, or Wonder Women if any of them snaps. Wally snapped and killed an entire host of heroes instantly and it was by accident. What if he snaps to Joker levels and actually did decide to go out murdering people? Who would really be able to stop him? Third and the worse of all, It makes people not want to strive to be a hero anymore. No one likes Trama, no one likes having a bunch of problems thrust onto themselves. No one goes out looking for tragic accidents waiting to happen. But that's to be expected of Heroes, it's just not explored or brought to the forethrought or mentioned very often. Having it all aired out in the open, publically, that doing good will fuck you up so badly? No one is going to want that, no one is going to strive for that, no one will willingly take that chance. And that, to me, if the worse part. It didn't GIVE hope, it KILLED all hope in the world. People can no longer look at Batman and call him a Hero, he's been proven to be a damaged vigilante who will kill everyone if he sees too much, or deals with too much. They just gave fuel for all those organizations all about killing the Super Powered Beings, if this was Marvel this would be the exact point in time that the Superhero Registration Act would happen as the people and governments can no longer trust ANY Hero. And unless they can prove without a doubt that they are able to wipe away all trama from all heroes in the whole world, there is no turning back. This series FUCKED the DC universe, as no one should listen to heroes anymore, Heroes should now become Enemy number 1 around the world. Regulated, Monitored, Contained and even Killed if too powerful. The entire planet now has a bunch of unbeated time bombs walking around, just waiting to snap and kill everything and everyone. And that's not a good thing.

“You want a Robin costume?” brilliant. I am with Team NO. Except I like your hair. No problem there.
