I think one of the best general summaries of why the Shaolin Monks became such legendary fighters was given by the narrator of the show "Deadliest Warrior" when the Shaolin Monks were featured on that show: "The Shaolin wanted nothing more than to live in passive solitude. But the outside world would not leave them alone."

My main problem with the For Honor version: No kung fu. Mostly staff work with a few kicks here and there. I studied Hung Gar kung fu (southern style Shaolin) a few years ago and from my first lesson, I was in utter pain from all the stretching. But I still know most of the positions I was taught.

I think if they implemented unarmed combat, not only would that be an unfair advantage, but as far as suspending your disbelief while playing For Honor, that would be way too far fetched. Especially since most of the warriors are armoured. How would a simple punch, even at its most powerful given the amount of kilojoules of kinetic force or whatever, it would not be enough to put a dent into the armour. So sorry if this version isn’t up to your standards, but I have a feeling you would complain about the lack of realising even if they only gave him kung fu moves

I kinda feel bad that he didn't bring up Shorinji Kempo, a martial art whose creator were a big fan of the shaolin temple, even quoting a great painting in the temple where monks were fighting together happy, and today exists as an idea to spread both understanding of selfdefense and in order to build strong people in their spirit as well

Hey there nice video! There were a few things that I didn't know about such as female shaolin and I thought that there were none of them, hence there may have been a lady's sect which is a sister group to the shaolin or at least in age of wushu, if it's real. As for the training being reserved for higher masters, I do believe it as well. I don't know if its true or not, but for every dot on your head, the more complete your training was, with 9 being the most. The shaolin we have in the game seems to have 6 on his head implying that his training may not be complete all the way which is justified in ranton's video. Ranton did address how inflexible and how bad our shaolin from the game is compared to real life. I love this dude and all, but I only play him for the namesake. I don't like how they made him like a psychotic murder though. But nice video though!, Keep it up!

That was almost perfect man. I actually spent 6 years with the shoalin. I wouldn't call then shoalin Buddhist as not every monk is Buddhist. I myself was at the time but there were those there that wasn't. There's defintly a lot that they do for the press for ex I've never heard one of them say anything like "it's cause your not balanced in your mind that your not achieving this" or any "spiritualism" like that. In fact very little of my actual stay there was spent training in the temple itself. There's a good number of shoalin themselves that don't belive in chi or anything like that. It was extremely brutal training I do remember that. Now as far as the weapons I can't say they would never a weighted staff. Maybe not traditionally but as far as I know in war you use what is most effective. Not to mention that they also teach several other weapons many of which involves blades. My preference was the staff but I leaned towards that becouse it was so versatile. Meaning you could use it to disarm, create distance, reach new heights in some cases literally. I can say as far as shoalin women. Well for thousands of years there wasn't not even a mention of them. Until that was mentioned but there was almost no proof presented with it. And I do know politically they are trying to become more progressive I guess is the right word. I'm going to let you fill I'm the blank with that. As women generally were not treated well among that time in China. So I really doubt that is true. And it defintly would be the first lie the temple told (insert Mr qi master blowing out candles with his "energy of the qi in his palm" here). I was however extremely disappointed to see that many of the martial arts was cut out with the monk. And some monks were allowed to have hair. That is a commentment you choose to make on your own walk not something that was forced upon you. If you are forced to do it, it looses its value. And there are seperate monks in the temple who are there entirely for the Buddhist aspect but are not shoalin warriors they are the shoalin Buddhist. But that is more of a newer thing back then almost all shoalin warriors would of probably been Buddhist.

The wax wood staff is indeed the standaard shaolin weapon but the weighted ratang staff like shaolin uses is actuely one of the weapons in the shaolin arsenal and I'm not 100% sure about it, but I do think acording to legend this was there war staff sow keeping that in mind the shaolin in for honor go into war sow that makes sense. The wax wood staff was there travel, training and selfdefence staff not there war staff.
@RavenKnightYT
@RavenKnightYT 3 жыл бұрын
Ive never heard of Ratang staffs, but I did look up rattan staffs which were staffs made of rattan wood in some bow staff construction, increasing their flexibility. I found no evidence of weighted staff usage in Shaolin martial arts. But I can’t be sure without further research.

Even if it isn't accurate, I do like the whole monkey personality, since it is supposed to be used to taunt the opponent and annoy them. I think the weights in the FH's Shaolin is due having to fight both physically bigger, technological advance opponents. Sure, you can bonk someone on the head with a stick and still would hurt, but if that person is wearing LB armor.. Good luck doing it without any extra weight
