What a lovely bloke he was. I'd just driven back from Germany and had stopped at Watford services. He insisted on buying me a coffee and a sandwich before I drove any further as I looked so knackered. Had a great chat with him. A really great bloke.

The guy was a genius and right for his time like every other comic back then. Don't try and bring these guys and that period into today's woke snowflake times because it was a completely different thing just like this period will be looked back on and pulled apart by future generations. I'm just glad I got to grow up and experience the 70's and 80's because it was a joy.

@@martinnevey7258 The real reason behind Childline was so that when victims of abuse by paedophile elites called up to report these offences the matter wouldn't go any further to protect the elite paedophiles and the unwitting victim's believed that something would be done now its been logged with Childline and left it at that. The innocent volunteers on the end of the telephones would take down the details and pass it up the chain who then took no further action. Obviously paedophiles were caught through Childline but not politicians, royalty or celebrities. I don't know how deep Esther Rantzen's involvement was.

You have to admit that some of his humour was intrinsically racist compared to today, but it was the norm then. Efforts were being made in the 70s and 80s through comedy to combat racism. Whether right or wrong, the intentions were good. But still many people think his act was just a night of racism. It wasn't at all. As the man said, he told jokes about everyone, including his overweight self. He was a very funny man, with a great gift of timing. The harsh humour came from the very harsh environments he lived in of the 30s to the 70s. That's why he appealed to working class people. He identified with them. He would deliberately wind up people who couldn't take a joke, or who focused on the occasional racist-type joke. On the Mrs Merton Show he just went along with the accusations out of resignation, but sadly it back-fired on him.
