Something else to add: Just because we watch anime, play JRPGS, listen to Jpop, and partake of other Japanese products DOES NOT mean that we idolize Japan. Most of us are aware of the overworking, suicide rates, and bad things that happen there. Most of us don't see Japan as some holy land to be worshiped. We simply enjoy the entertainment media that comes out of that country, and we partake of it.

If anyone was wondering, the protest in Japan with 200 ppl is real, it was about how a police officer injured a Kurdish permanent resident when trying to restrain (not sure if this is the right translation) him. They asked to search his car and he refused (because he had a dentist's appointment), so the officers dragged him out of the car. Apparently, there’s a video of it, with him saying that he didn’t do anything and that they could just talk. So yeah, we do have political issues, like every other country in the world. It’s nothing new. There are lots of other issues, like stuff about Koreans and Chinese people, “half” people (as in part Japanese part “gaijin”), having the most patients in mental health facilities (even though their conditions are not severe), etc. Some people are just more aware of it than others, like in any country. Also, I think people are generally warier of protesting in Japan because of the history of student protests in the 1960s and 1970s. There were a lot of different types of protests, like anti-war protests, protests against high college fees, other political protests, and so on. It got really crazy; there would be different organized groups kind of fighting each other. Some groups were based on politics (socialist, communist, Marxist, leftist, etc. Sorry, translations probs not 100% accurate), others were based on college, and others on the type of subject you studied (kind of). There were kidnappings and lynchings. There was even an assassination of one group leader by another. Like, it wasn’t even just violent conflict between the protesters and police/government, it was basically like a war between different protesting groups. So, I mean, considering the history, in addition to the general characteristic of Japanese people not wanting to cause trouble and “fit in”, it's not surprising that Japanese people, in general, aren’t very political. Welp, if anyone read to the end thank you for reading my essay lmao. I don’t even know what exactly I wanted to say, but I thought it might be interesting for someone haha. Edit: thanks for the likes and comments! didn't think so many people would be interested and engage. Additional Edit 4/4/2021: If anyone would like to know, a little more info about the incident... 1. The Kurdish man was stopped due to traffic violations. He accelerated past a driving police car, did not use a signal to change lanes, refused to show ID when stopped, and drove off. He later stopped in the middle of traffic, got out of the car, and stood in the median strip. When they tried to search his belongings, he resisted, which led to the police restraining him. The police found no issues with his belongings, so they just gave him a verbal notice and let him go. 2. The Japan Kurdish Cultural Association released a statement that basically says that they do not support the protest that occurred in Shibuya. This is because the people that attended were not people that generally support the Kurdish community and were people that joined just because of the sensationalist news coverage of it. They stated that if the man had not committed traffic violations and followed the instructions of the police, there would have been no issue. They feel that this protest was held in ill faith by people who don't actually care about the well-being of Kurdish immigrants in Japan. 3. The Japanese Security Police (公安警察) have stated that there were bomb threats made to the Shibuya police station etc. regarding this incident. This is thought to be done by violent far-leftist groups, and not Kurdish immigrants, but it has created a bad image of Kurdish immigrants (negative comments like "go back to your country" have been sent to the Japan Kurdish Cultural Association). 4. It's been reported that many Kurdish protestors left midway through the protests because it did not align with their beliefs and sent a bad image about Kurdish immigrants.

Let's flip it. "American people generally care a lot about politics." It's about the same as saying "Japanese people are generally apolitical." I don't think this is a phrase people should be upset about. Based on my experience with both the Japanese and American people, this generally rings true.
@MoostachedSaiyanPrince4 жыл бұрын
You know, his mini-rant about what happened with that person who wanted to discuss politics seemingly for the sole purpose of their own validation raised an excellent point. Most people who talk about politics don't want to actually discuss it, they just want the other people to validate their opinions. They have no confidence in themselves or what they supposedly believe in, which is why they lash out so severely when they encounter someone who believes differently, because all they want is validation from others, and because they think that all decent people think the same way they do, if you tell them you disagree with them, they think you're either a terrible person or that you're deliberately trying to antagonize them.

Well Bully, They all need to hear the truth, about how others can have their own opinions. I've been living in Japan for maybe 8 years now. There's a lot of stereotyping and racism here. As far as morals and whatnot, it's pretty interesting because they'll publish manga with all kinds of insanely bizarre sexual stuff then censor Cyberpunk 2077. I've always felt that there are a lot of people who have a romanticised image of the country and culture. I see people outside train stations raising awareness and protesting different political issues, so I wouldn't say people are apolitical, but at the same time, there are a lot of people who don't engage with the political process at all. You're not going to find many people who have 'arguments' with here since people usually stick to non-contentious issues and avoid confrontational responses to maintain harmony. You'll find that the most common topic of conversation is the weather.

I have nothing important to say because I got here through KZbin recommendations but I believe the sign that guy is holding in 1:50 says something along the lines of "Why kick someone that's being held down?"

Now that is taking too far. You have insulted the High Order of Weebs and the Anime Community, 'tis time for War. Tbh, Normies are STILL disgusting to me, this video proves it. Normies in the Video (exclude HeroHei) ARE destroying the Japanese loving and Anime Community.

I've lived abroad in a number of locations, there's a big portions of expats who are misfits in their own country. They're often abroad because of substance abuse problems, legal/financial problems, and bad work histories often because of friction with co-workers. These people are often angry at the world especially the society they transplanted themselves to. Before social media their rants were only heard in crappy expat bars. It's best to avoid and ignore these people.

I'm so tired of those "activists" giving virtual signals. If they're aware of politics then why can't they do that in the real world instead of pushing their agenda on entertainment or anyone's hobby for that matter? Nobody's here to lecture.
