I'm not saying that changing the skin colour of a character for fun or curiosity is wrong, but the double standards some people have are weird. If they were offended by the Pokémon character drawn as slightly whiter, they should be offended by the Sailor Moon character drawn as black.

I mean... At risk of sounding racist, I kinda wonder why it is, since... (Also note, I do not claim to be an expert on anything) Using this redraw as an example, anime characters are surprisingly pale and easily confused with being white when.. aren't asian people in general darker-skinned on average? And you'd think that would be a bigger part of the artist's palette due to this fact?
@anodyne46703 жыл бұрын
@@aquamarinerose5405 You do realize how large Asia is right? Northern Chinese, Japanese, Korean have light skin on average. I'm Thai and I'm incredibly pale for Thai people because of my Chinese ancestry. I even got sunburn really bad if I went out into the sun. So "Asian people average" is something that is extremely unreliable. And as for "confused with being white" that is entirely westerners' problems. People here don't confuse Asian character as white or vice versa. Also most of the time we didn't even assign race when we look that these character. We assign cultural background and origin. I'll be honest whenever characters in anime or manga have colored hair, I always took that as a design choice for their personality. In fact anime characters with yellow hair despite being japanese didnt mean that they were "blonde" to me, if anything I just took that as the artists just showcasing their eccentric or happy personallity. My rule of thumb is, unless the characters themselves acknowledge their own race and hair color( Ann Takamaki being part American and Ryugi Sakamoto dying his hair) then I'll I'll simply accept them as Japanese, but just with their hair showcasing their personality.

Naoko Takeuchi and there was no "deep thought" behind the colorings aside aesthetic. As for the art style...that's just how she draws. I think in her early design, Usagi (sailor moon) was supposed to have silver hair, but she changed it to a light blonde. Each character is just meant to represent a different type of modern Japanese girl. Rei (Sailor Mars) is her interpretation of a classic Japanese beauty, Ami (Mercury) a studious student, etc. the coloring was for the sake of variety. exaggerated features such as the large eyes is because of the anime motif of being expressive through the eyes. there's nothing wrong with it. people on twitter are just dumb.

It is a problem in general with SJWs - they often do not know jack-shit about other cultures or regions in general. They think Slavs are 'just like all white people' or use other freakin' generalizations without any real care for truth behind their words and without any real knowledge (at least outside US itself, but if I were to believe many of my US-living friends - then SJWs fail at knowing US history and culture as well)

@@wejwyj2230 Yeah, I still recall that debacle. Maybe since I'm Pole or maybe since I like to study myths and legends ~ Say what You will but Sapkowski has done his research and at least the bestiary of world he created is definitely quite distinct. If you were even to go with bit more 'eastern' *cought* Russian *cough* myths - some creatures wouldn't be here , some would look different, while others like Domovoi would appear. That's the kicker in fact: while there are some intertwined elements of mythologies of Slavic people - you have at least 4-6 mythologies out of which Polish, Russian and Czech are most expanded. The same could be said about many other seemingly homogenous by today's standard places. China would be good example where mountain tribes (highlanders?) had very distinct myths compared to plains dwellers when it comes to early, early China. To truly have a diverse selection of.. well anything really - you NEED to allow some vivid distinction (like Wiedżmin holding onto the Polish folklore and overall structure of the times it represents). World is way more diverse than ignorant pseudo-intellectual spoiled brats would comprehend. I hate terms they use like: "European culture" ... ok, which one? We have few tens of those! Heck, I was born in Poland and my main culture is Kaszebe culture which is not same a general Polish culture. If they mean "Western post Christian Culture' Then yeah - something like that exists and we call it western culture for short. But even darn United States have their own distinct culture separate from that! Americana is not direct result of Western Culture alone. Many factors lead to its creation and it is visibly different. When they transform they age, this was told in the manga but never stated in the original anime in the english or the original Japanese. That's the reason why when the Sailor Scouts were seen by their family and friends they weren't recognized. In addition they have super powers, they're not in any danger from anyone. As a kid I always thought it was weird that I thought they looked a lot better as Sailor Scouts than as civilians, then I learned about the omitted fact about their transformations years later and it made sense.

This is just as infuriating when certain Wokes try to "white knight" for POC, it's JUST that irritating. Like we *_don't_* have hive minds, we think for ourselves, we don't need to be babied and coddled and have everything handed to us due to something that happened to our ancestors. History quite literally UNO reversed itself and it's aggravating to all hell. You don't need to get offended for us just based off the ASSUMPTION that all POC will be offended by something (usually jokes, games, etc) that even mentions their race. It makes us look fragile and sensitive and it's quite literally racist. I didn't know that people overseas even noticed nor cared what these Wokes think, but that goes to show that literally people from opposite countries even find it annoying and racist.

Walt Disney is responsible for Anime. He is the reason all anime characters have the huge eyes so everyone thinks they're white instead of asian. Disney artists and animators drew a lot of characters with really big eyes, this point was driven home the hardest by their smash success in 1942, Bambi. Osamu Tezuka was a huge fan of disney animation and emulated the big eyes in his own works because he felt they gave them more character and more ability to be expressive. He created Astroboy, Kiba the White Lion, and a few other things. And everyone in japan past that point, emulated Osamu Tezuka's work and his version of animation with the giant ass eyes. It became the industry standard that is only seldomly drifted away from, but it is still the standard all anime and manga are drawn in. They just like the bigass eyes over there. Of course white folks thinking everything in the world is about them often assume those characters are white people they do have white skin and bigger, more rounded eyes than what they imagine an animated asian person should have, and boom, you have a recipe for race assumptions which inevitably leads to politics and butthurtness on all sides.
