Magawa wearing his little medal on his harness is one of the cutest things i've ever seen. What a beautiful animal and friend! I'm so glad he was so well looked after because he absolutely deserved it. RIP Magawa my friend.

Thank you for bringing such stories into the public and honouring even the smallest helpers. I can't imagine what it means to live in a place where a false step can instantly kill or cripple you, because of some war that's been over for years. And of course a mine doesn't care WHO stepped on it... There's a reason they are amongst the few weapons that many countries banned... As for rats: They're brilliant little buggers. I owned pet rats for years (the small ones of course) and they kept surprising me. It amazes me that in a brain as tiny as theirs there's not just space for problem solving abilities that often beat those of dogs or cats, but also for a quite complex social behaviour AND quite individual "personalities". Hooray for giving them a chance to shine! :)

@@trevipp Me too. Especially all those like Rats or Squirrels or Otters who have little hands. They look like I imagine our ancestors once did (long before they became apes). If it's furry and has hands I find them adorable. :) And many of them are VERY clever for brains of their size.

Magawa has passed away, makes me sad to hear. We need more heros like this, besides clearing mines he shows humans how animals are also worth appreciation. A rat is not to be despised, even rats can be our friends and heros. Hope Magawas legacy was more than clearning mines but also one of spreading appreciation of nature. Way to go Magawa!

I've just learned about this amazing creature. I've often told people that rats are one of the most targeted victims of human ignorance and cruelty and I hope his noble work and the high risks he runs serve to raise awareness to the value of these intelligent, sensitive creatures who even sing to the their partners! Thank you so much for the precious work of your organization, I can't donate most unfortunately but I have shared this all over and will be sharing your videos from now on! Much love and respect from Brazil!

"Our pets give us a reason to get up in the morning, a reason to carry on when things feel hopeless." Jesus, this has been so true for me during the pandemic. I have bipolar disorder, and even when I'm depressed I know that my rabbits need me to take care of them, which is sometimes the only thing I care about. And seeing how cute they are, seeing them happy, and petting them makes me feel better.

Cats hurt birds more than rats tbh they are considered pest for a reason because they boom they fuck like rabbits and breed a shit ton. A cat won't do anything to rat population but they destroy birds horribly they cause massive habitat destruction to birds and small lizards.

APOPO also trained their rats to detect tuberculosis in samples of human sputum. The rats - Gambian Giant Pouched Rats - work much faster than lab testing, and have a higher rate of accuracy. With their human handlers, they've cleared almost all the landmines that were causing so much death and injury. They are some of God's humblest creatures, doing great good for humankind. They all deserve medals, and all the kindness and bananas we can give.
