Herping happened on our trip to Florida this spring. When you get Michael and Chris together, that's just a given. The beautiful Coachwhip on the thumbnail threatening Chris with a strike was an unbelievable capture. Just to get one of these speedsters in hand can be a challenge. But they pulled it off. They also found the venomous Coral Snake, famous for the old "red on yellow kill a fellow" saying. Please note, these guys have experience handling venomous snakes. DO NOT attempt to grab a snake, especially if you don't know what species it is.
Of course, cottonmouth snakes and alligators were spotted too! They even came across a water snake that had the misfortune of becoming wrapped in discarded fishing line, and cut it off, freeing the poor snake from a slow and painful death. Let's all try to stop trashing our wild lands. Carry a small bag with you, and even if it was someone else's trash, pick it up! We've got to do better!
Michael did not find his target species, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, even with the best effort from both of the guys to do so. He is a little beside himself because Matt found one on a previous trip. I guess that leaves room for another video about herping Florida at some point! The found several other interesting species as well, so join them as they explore the saw palmetto and pine forest of central Florida!
