In my life I've heard thousands of tenors. But there was only one Gedda. No one else will ever reach him. Neither his voice nor his personality and charisma. It's consoling to know he was healthy until old age. He died peacefully in his sleep ... R.I.P. Maestro Gedda

He knows that with a microphone behind his back he can do things he can't stage. His final duet from Aida completely crushed me. I thought the tenor was James McCracken. I adore James. But it was Nicolai who sang. Here it is beautiful to see how lightly he sings in studio and then completely different with the orchestra. Was he a human or a chameleon? Human probably. but I am not sure.

Adore this. Gedda's wondrous & sensual legato & expression is unsurpassed. Interesting how the orchestral version seems to be a minor third higher than the piano one. Both are super, but prefer the intimacy of the first as it demonstrates Gedda's great control & quality of voice.

I don't think I ever heard Nicolai in better voice. What superb legato and warmth caressed our ears. No later than the early 1960s (at least for the orchestral version) is my guess.
