Not something i relate to since im gay, but straight life and gender roles seem fascinating as an outsider. It's weird to consume so much media that is not made for you but consider it normal.

Volume sucks. It's interesting that many people who present themselves as "liberated" still have gender role expectations down deep; early programming hard to overcome. Another is door holding: it's a power move that is called chivalrous or gentlemanly in dating but in the business upper social circles it's definitely a power move with the alpha holding the door open. Watch a group of heads of state together or CEOs and they'll fight over it. Same with paying the check at a meal. Growing up in San Francisco during 1970s feminism you were likely to get scolded holding the door for a woman because they recognized all the subtle power dynamics involved. I taught my daughters to always bring money for half the check and to be suspicious of overly "gentlemanly" guys because it was about power. They are so sweet now but ultimately they want to own you. It's not that they are evil or even acting that way intentionally; just cultural programming.

Gender roles have been extremely helpful to me as a transsexual man. Even if I am not in a relationship I use this in everyday life and am thankful I can find this. Men and women need to learn our history again and accept that masculine women and feminine men are extremely rare and should not be treated as the default. It makes everyone unhappy in the end.

The problem is that for something to become acceptable in our society, people often push it as an ideal to be achieved, overlooking the fact that it is acceptance for those who have the ability to take advantage of it, but most people aren't that. Most people are satisfied with traditional gender roles, but these are not enough to meet the requirements of our current society. Women in the workplace are essential for our modern economy. Take into consideration that environmental pressures are what maintain certain habits, currently men and women do not have the same biological pressure as before. Most western men no longer have to hunt or do forced labor to survive, and most women do not die in childbirth as they once did. They still important but not as much as before.
