LMAO, live in a distro for 3-6 months before you know if you like it or not. These are the same people who switch distros twice in a day simply because something wasn't the way they wanted it. Nobody tries a distro for 3-6 months if they don't like it. IDK about anyone else, but I can tell in about a half hour if I'm going to like a distro enough to carry on with it. Then give me a day and I'll know if I can use it long term.

That's not true for me. I download an iso, hate it delete the iso, re-download it after 1 2 months after listening what good features it has and install it and it looks awesome and works awesome. I hated ubuntu budgie and linux mint on first look but now like them very much. Also liked Manjaro for intial days but didn't like it after some days

> No one has tried to open-source a game When it comes to open-sourcing games everyone seems to forget that id Software and the Doom and Quake series exist. Those games are still being sold for money, the engines are is licensed under the GPL, only the assets are non-free. I asked Stallman himself and he sees no problem, game assets are not programs, so they are relevant to Free Software. Free Software and video games are perhaps the least controversial issue. Just sell the game and open-source the engine code. The real reason is that companies either use proprietary middleware, or they want to re-license their own middleware as proprietary to other companies. Think of Epic and the Unreal Engine. But for someone using either Free middleware or writing their own, there is no reason to keep the game proprietary.

Thank you, Derek. The first impression approach is appropriate. (You did not like Pop-shell which is fine. It has evolved a great deal since then. You still won't like it much because it's based on Gnome. But I would be interested in what you might think of it now.) But what I really enjoy are your in-depth pieces or introductions to obscure tools.

The Blink engine is BSD/LGPL. The project has contributions from several companies other than Google, such as Microsoft, Adobe, Facebook, IBM, Intel, Opera, Samsung... The Gecko engine is MPL based. However, the mozilla foundation is known for making contributions difficult for other companies. This may explain why there is a preference for the blink engine.

I agree DT distro doesn’t matter. Linux is Linux first impression is all that matters. If you start changing stuff it’s called customizing it... at that point it’s becoming “ your OS” not the development systems.
@oldforestroad
@oldforestroad 3 жыл бұрын
Customization is personal, and yeah I/we will do that. We could probably makes any distro work, and that is honestly the best part. What I am interested in is high-level distro differences, and comments to that, which is review worthy. A 6 month experience will surely make for a much better and realistic review, but I don't think it takes 6 months to make an assessment enough for a "review". This makes me think of a car review in Motor Trend or Car and Driver, and how they do a car review with specs and comparison, and then later a "long-term report". I love a first impression review, that is super-helpful, and then a follow-up on further and in-depth experience is great. Love your work DT! Truly an awesome channel.

Quake comes to my mind as an example of an open-source game, and I think it was an AAA game back in the days. So the source code is now open and free, but you need your own copy of “proprietary” part with textures, models, sounds, etc

..a 6 month distro review? Ain't nobody got time for that! ...and btw, you are absolutely correct Derek. The distro is the distro for the first few days. After that it becomes your flavour of someones elses distro. After 6 months, it's damn near your own distro. When it's arch based guys, just install Arch and make your own distro. Roll your own and roll it well... Distro hopping is fine for beginners. It's actually a very useful thing to do. But once you find your feet? ....roll your own.

You're right (3:50), First impressions is where it's at. If something doesn't look right or work the way you would expect it to work, then it's not worth my time. If I have to look through the key commands on a website to find out they're not even close to what I expect them to be then it's not worth my time. Sure, you could have taken ArchCraft and spent the day fixing the keybindings and whatnot but then, what do you have at the end of the day? Manjaro with different backgrounds. Browsers: I love Firefox. I used Netscape in it's heyday and prefered it over Microsoft Exploder (back when I ran Windows). Brave is also good but it's Chrome based and that sort of gives me the willies.

Brave was caught redirecting users urls to affiliate pages that got them paid without user consent. So much for that quality open source software. That's not the first time Brave did something like this either. I wouldn't touch that browser if you paid me. BTW DT, Qutebrowser now defaults to using chromium as it's backend (qtwebengine) If you want the old qtwebkit backend it has been forked and you must install it separately and then configure Qutebrowser to use it. Qutebrowser claims it is "less secure" but on my Arch box where I use it i can tell you it is much faster and lighter on resources. Firefox is a resource hog. There are many many webkit browsers that are light and fast. Surf, Vimb, Luakit, Lariza, Badwolf to name a few.

Time passed and listened to Taking into account series I realized that I could actually have my nerdy, Linux questions answered or discussed at a very good level, bordering on professional. More and more driving to work listening to Derek voice and witty comments until I clicked on Subscribe. Derek, you are not perfect, but for sure you how to make the best of it and teach us a LOT about internet mannerisms, Linux and life. Championship freedom and free software nowadays is almost a lost cause. Even so, Derek your videos about freedom and privacy made me write an article about those things. DT you got it right. First impressions make a big difference. It's just like going on a job interview. If you come in looking sloppy. The interviewer is not going to take you seriously. If you come in a suit and everything is in its place. You're going to be taking more seriously. DT you are talking about the out of the box experience. Real people don't want to spend 15 hours setting up an operating system. People want to get on with their lives. DT I see both sides of the arguments when it comes to a distro review. They can be helpful and harmful at the same time. If the reviewer used the product and didn't read the instruction manual. Of course the reviewer going to give a negative review. But if the reviewer read the instruction manual and did not have any preconceived notions. The reviewer will give a positive review. Distro reviews are a necessary evil that you have to put up with in order to gain the benefits.

hey dt you say aaa games could just make money otherwise. or do a service of some kind. a few thoughts on that: support is rarely needed since there is enough of these digital store fronts like steam out there that make installing and starting the games easy. backup copies are an eyesore to the industry for the most part so selling those aint gonna happen. selling a piece of software that enables you to deploy your own dedicated aaa-game server for multiplayer once offical multiplayer is shutdown are a possibility but next to noone actually does that. if the companies discontinue offical multiplayer its mostly for monetary reasons (ie. game does not make money anymore) so why bother anyway. and monetizing other parts of the game will either encourage pay to win strategies or put in unnecessary cosmetics just so microtransactions (which are widely hated) can be "justified"... and thinking of other services in respect to gaming leads my mind mostly to geforce now, stadia and alike. which is an entirely different problem afterall. once we used to own physical copies of games without any drm/copy protection then we got physical copies with copy protection then virtual copies with drm. and seems like there is already a huge effort to take even that away from the customer with a rise of streaming services across the board including gaming lately. --> side effect through these efforts gray/secondary market is elimnated (for the most part). so getting rid of a game (non physical form) these days after you completed it for a " cash back" is basocally not possible...

I think the reason people put video games in their own category because they're entertainment software and not productivity software. There is nothing really useful you can do with them (unless you're a content creator), you spend money on them to entertain yourself the same way you spend money on cinema tickets or books or whatever else you do when you're not working. Personally I'm in the same camp, if there was a software developed using video game engine that was used for something productive (like simulation for education/military industries etc) then I'd very much like that software to be open source. Games? Who cares Also, the very important difference you're missing is that Oracle and RedHat and Suse and all those other companies making money on open source software develop software aimed at business customers and not individual end users.

It's so ironic that the web is almost entirely run by a "Web 2.0" company. The company that popularized the concept of the "Web" (Netscape/Mozilla Corporation) out of its academic roots. I think it's time to break up "Alphabet", honestly. And then go after Google. I mean holy CRAP they have their hands in basically every facet of modern life.

Firefox had to gain support of new web technologies like custom scrollbars, backdrop-filter (blur on websites) but FF is a pain on ass for webdevs, bcs we have do compatibility with older Technics bcs Firefox doesn't support new ones, if it doesn't change, Firefox will use their marketshare

ID software has done that since the Quake. All of the "IdTech" engines have been open source for a looong while. And yeah Carmack (John) wanted to open-source Doom earlier, there was push-back from inside ID. And from Epic Games, Unreal is open source. CryEngine is open source. Hell, unreal even says licenses for UE are free up until you sell you first million dollars, so yeah. A LOT of game production tools are open source.

Buncha princesses out there who can't figure it out. I hopped the top hundred or so at distrowatch because I wasn't satisfied with Mint. I went exclusively with first impressions. If it didn't install easily I turfed it. If it did the look and feel were next on my hit list. Then I watch DT's Regolith first look and got into i3, which lead to Erik's scripts, which lead to Arco. I couldn't care less about reviews either. Does it work or does it just jerk me around? How simple is that to understand?? :)

I use brave as my my primary browser and firefox as secondary because somehow Firefox feels slow in all the basic tasks we do on a web browser. also for web development I need to develop on a browser that most people are using. even firefox developer edition's dev tools lacks the polish and some features of brave (chrome) developer tools.

Hi Derek, you're right about the religions, they are all get you to the same point - enlightment, choosing religion is like choosing your path, to lead you to the same point. However, you're wrong about buddhism, it's a philosophy, not a religion. Am I a buddhist? I am not, but I do follow that path because it easy for me to understand life around me. Greetings from Russia!

LOOOOOOL! I mean, yeah, triple AYYYE games CAN make profit in many different ways, but they won’t. Big publishers want to make all the money in the world, so they implement predatory micro transactions, raise the base price of the product and stuff it full with DRM “protection”. There’s no way they would adopt something user-friendly willingly

It doesn't matter too much on Windows if one uses Firefox or Chrome. I mean, they're almost identical. Meanwhile in Linux, it's painful to use Firefox on rolling distros. I get really angry, when anything forces me to configure it to make it even useful. I'm using it now on a Debian-based distribution, thankfully, it's at least sort of usable out of the box, so I'm not required to dive into any obscure undocumented things to fix it. I literally spent several days to make it work on Void Linux, but then gave up.

@@MarkHobbes By default, fonts look like a complete disaster, scrolling through pages is physically painful for the eyes. And overall (not only related to rolling distros, but to FF in general): no image searching nor "Translate page" context menu entries, etc.These two are the features I'm really missing in FF, and probably why I'm gonna switch back to Chromium soon I guess. My point overall is: there are real reasons, why Chrome won the market share race.
