Hey Hey Fever (1935) 35mm Film Scan Preview

This has been in the works for a while. My friend ‪@jericodvorak4538‬ found an individual who had this 35mm nitrate print of Hey Hey Fever. I was able to broker a deal to have it scanned at Black Hawk films.
With this, we have almost all the MGM Bosko films in some format (some 35, mostly 16).

This scan is gorgeous! Btw I noticed that most prints online removed the sound of the king burping around 1:55 (and because of that I never really got the ending before lol). I wonder if this is some kind of censorship or something?

Yes, censorship. The Hays Code had recently been introduced by the time this cartoon was released, and very prudish and puritanical restrictions began in Hollywood. I've seen several cartoons from this era where burps had been cut/censored from the original product.

That is really interesting to note. I guess the burp was deemed too obscene for viewers at one point, and they decided to censor it. I wonder when that was changed. Of course, it was a different time back then, and things we wouldn’t consider inappropriate today weren’t always thought of that way. Mainstream films couldn’t even show toilets in any scenes until the horror film Psycho came out in 1960 and changed that.

I liked the part where Lil' Bo Peep was skipping along, and as she did, her skirt flew up, and, I swear, I could see her white underwear was showing! Bold move... IN 1935! I'm surprised that part was NOT censored!

Excellent cartoon. It would be better if the left and right sides were black rather than the moving images. The left side is especially distracting.

I suppose it's the part where the sound is scanned on the filmstrip. I was looking for this cartoon without the scan; I did, but the part where the king burped had this particular sound muted. Some people say it was because of the Hays Code, which went into operation in the 1930's, some time before Hey hey fever was released by MGM

After 3 Cartoons Of Cubby Bear, He Left The Van Beuren Studios. After All, He Decided To Make An Color Short Called "The Discontented Canary (1934)" Which Is An 2 Strip Color Short. So... Bosko Has A Same Design From Warner Bros and MGM... That Means, Bosko Made 2 Color Shorts Only The WB Design
