The sad boy vibe couldn't have been more authentic, unfortunately. Songwriter Doug Hopkins wrote it about his desire to get back together with his ex who left him due to his heavy drinking. His drinking was so bad, in fact, that he ended up being fired from the band, and not long after the huge success of this song he took his own life. It can't really get any sadder than that.

I have so many great memories of seeing the Blossoms at local bars, but there is always some sadness about Doug. He was as gifted a musician as he was a troubled soul. I would love to have heard the songs he wrote next.

Brilliantly said, Allison! Are you a writer? If you aren't, you should be. Speaking as a paid writer, every sentence hits a nail on the head, together they form a strong arc, the wording is economical yet flows with choice colloquial touches. Wish the work I turn out was like this.

"And you can trust me not to drink" was changed to "And you can trust me not to think" which upset the writer of the song, Doug Hopkins. Still, the song was recorded. Hopkins' had a drinking problem and was soon kicked out of the Gin Blossoms (Scotty Johnson replaced him). The song got the attention of A&M Records, and they signed the band (without Hopkins). What followed was a video, then exposure on MTV, and up went the Gin Blossoms' popularity (all without Hopkins). Hopkins fell deeper into his depression and committed suicide at the age of 32 years. ☹

They were signed while Doug was still in the band and he began to self sabotage, which is typical for addicts. The band made then manager Laura Lewin tell him he was out because they didn’t have the balls. But, the label made them because of all the problems he was causing while they were recording the album. I lived in Tempe at the time and knew the guys, used to see them playing at local clubs. When the band was back in town during Christmas time, someone let Doug know that singer Robin Wilson was at our favorite hangout called Long Wongs having a drink. For whatever reason, Doug seemed to put the blame on Robin so he showed up, went directly inside and punched Robin in the face before being carried out by a very large bouncer. I’ll never forget that image of Doug being carried out of there. Anyway, Doug was the main songwriter and it was very hard for the band to get rid of him knowing that he was the main creative talent but they knew he’d sabotage everything. RIP Doug Hopkins, I still remember where I was when I heard he had committed suicide.

Such a unique band. They had that classic melancholy pop/rock 90s sound, but they had serious depth to back it up, too. The band was furious at the lyric: "you can trust me not to drink" because the lead singer/writer tragically had a huge problem with alcoholism. The Blossoms and Cranberries were a fundamental part of the soundtrack of my childhood.

My concept of rock solidified in 1966, when I was 12, in 8th grade. Over the years, some bands and songs have brought me back to what, in my mind, rock was supposed to be, to its perfect expression. This is a quintessential album of the 90's - perhaps one of the best. Lost Horizons, Hey Jealousy, Mrs. Rita, Hold Me Down, Allison Road - it's an album with one great song after another; incredibly catchy, moving, and sad due to the fact that many of the songs deal with Doug Hopkins' personal demons. So often with great art - the person producing it is troubled and tragic and Hopkins is no exception. They are a terrific band with a dynamic, melodic sound. Listen to the entire record.

Before they were signed, Gin Blossoms released a local album called Dusted on San Jacinto Records. I used to live in Tempe and booked local bands while I worked at a record store so I knew these guys. Doug Hopkins was a pop music genius! It was fun to see them play locally because the more they drank, the crazier the music got. They would cover the theme from The Jeffersons and U2’s I Will Follow when they were really drunk. They went by an alter ego called The Del Montes quite often and made lots of references to that when playing. Anyone from that era will remember Elvis Del Monte and might still have some of his art. Those were my college days and some of the best times of my life. RIP Doug Hopkins, I still remember exactly where I was when I heard that he killed himself. Such a tragic loss.

Good, thoughtful reaction, guys. This was a pretty big hit, lots of air play at the time. It certainly represents that era very well. I do think you should keep in mind that this is not the era of 70s bangers, of course. Songs like this had a really broad appeal, therefore charted for a while, and they were just fun, solid songs to enjoy. When you both get out of that late 60s, 70s pocket, you amp up the critique with some negative bias going into the listening session - as if you’re both looking for a reason to be nonplussed. (Granted A/B is a good grade for sure.). This approach I see is consistent with other artists’ songs from the post mid 70s you’ve listened to: Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Pretenders…definitely a pattern to where you gravitate, which is fine, it’s just expected that your reaction to these artists will be something like, “yeah, it was decent, I guess. Sounds 80s to me.” Well, keep rocking and expanding your horizons. Thanks for your dedication to this.

The first concert I ever saw in Memphis was Toad the Wet Sprocket with an opening act nobody had heard of called the Gin Blossoms. Seemed like days later Hey Jealousy started get into the radio rotation. Now that I think about it, All I Want from Toad the Wet Sprocket would be a good song to react to.

This was a great intro to the GB, but their singles just got better and better until their first phase ended. Found Out About You, Until I Fall Away, Til I Hear It From You, and Follow You Down are all fantastic.

The most emotionally earnest pop song ever written. Makes a simple break up feel like a cosmic catastrophe, and a simple desire to get back together as a longing that will endure through time.

Not a bad tune. In the 90s I did a lot of overseas travel. The technician that traveled with me was always trying to get me to listen to newer music. I have to admit the 90s did have a few good bands.

Meet then once at UMass - Amherst. They were doing a pop-up gig on the University Union before their show that night. I was (the only one) in the bar when they did their sound check. They were asking my opinion about the sound and a new song they tried. They were very sincere, listened to my opinions and chatted with me for a bit after the sound check. Came back for the short set (4 songs) later and they even gave me a shout out during it, pretty cool!

The Tempe AZ music scene was rich with good bands when Gin Blossoms rose to popularity. Dead Hot Workshop, Wise Monkey Orchestra, The Fake McCoys, Looking For Aldous Huxley and a number of other bands made for a vibrant variety in the early to mid 90s.

I saw something weird when Gin Blossoms played our free summer fest about five years ago. I was able to get to the very front, up against the barricade, and the lead singer obviously knew a woman standing next to me and was trying to get her attention, but she wouldn't look at him. She was rolling her eyes and blatantly dismissively turning away and ignoring him. It was like the roles were reversed and she was the famous person and he was the fan. It is weird that she took the time to go to the show, get up front, then dismissively ignore the singer as he tried to get her attention. There was some type of personal history there. Gin Blossoms are from AZ, which is about 48 hours by car from here. Making this personal interaction even weirder. Also weird is that a little girl also up front, maybe 8 to 10 years old, knew every lyric to every song. From this somewhat obscure band 20+ years past their prime.
