I kinda agree that loading screens are too "old" for us modern gamers, but NMS has a completely different gaming mechanics. And, let's be real, NMS is nowhere near close to Starfield when it comes to combat, action in general and storytelling. I know, I know, it is not Bethesda's best work in this regard, but NMS is just mumbo jumbo in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I am in NMS since 2016, so I have feelings for the game and I love it. But for all its qualities, it has its flaws.

I find the combat in starfield to be a weak point it's much too repetitive. It plays like a 1970s rpg. bad guys in room kill, bad guys in room kill. Do that again 10 more times. It's, realistic aesthetic goes against its hack and slash gameplay. Also it's, lack of in-game criminal consequences conflict with the realism it attempts to convey. Saying that, I prefer the art style of starfield to no man's sky. No more pink space or lime green 🤮 Starfield has more aggressive wildlife, which is much more realistic. Life fights to live.😉🤗

YOU, SIR are an ADULT at discussing gaming. And you've definitely won my like and subscription for this channel. I personally think people are hating just to review bomb this great gem of a game. It's especially seen in videos where they give a bad or unfavorable review after playing over 400+ hours of the game (???!), make that make sense. In my opinion I think it's because the game is an exclusive to Xbox and PC. And people are quick to show their bias by nitpicking the game with a microscope without a fair and mature critique as you did in this video, and hopefully your other videos as well. Do no one remember that Skyrim itself launched with a horde of glitches? Backward flying dragons? Bouncing carts? Floating objects (which i still see in the game when I played it for the first time last year)? There were so many reported glitches that people just laughed it off and the game STILL RECEIVED GAME OF THE YEAR THAT VERY YEAR! Of course everything has been ironed out over the years and people are still enjoying the game today. Because the meat and potatoes of the game was still a delicious meal to enjoy. And although we have an option to ride horses, it was still ridiculous travel times exploring the countryside, and dare I say it, the Bethesda mountains (grr...), those damn mountains!! Starfield have the return of the BETHESDA MOUNTAINS! So I'm willing to say if this game was multiplatform as Skyrim is then 50 or 60% of the negative critiques would have been forgivable with knowledge of patch updates being on the way. Sure, it is always fair to say a game should not launch buggy. But I've been able to play Starfield without the bugs damaging my playthrough experience. I'll admit I'm a HUGE fan of Star Trek and the TNG era of Star Trek, and this game is the closest I'll ever get to how I wish a Star Trek experience should be. So there's some bias on my part to explain my love for Starfield. Anyways the meat and potatoes of Starfield are delicious for my pallet. There's so much to do, I honestly can play this game for another 2 or 3 years without the need for new DLC outside of patches and upgrades. Some, if not most of the side quests are long enough to be full short stories and adventures by themselves! Just take your time and live within the universe, and you'll uncover all types of worlds, creatures, people, stories, locations, etc. I'm still discovering some newer locations in the main city I've never come across from a previous playthrough! Anyways I say all that just to say people should play the game and replay it again and you'll be given a different experience when making different choices. I can appreciate this game not being for everyone, but if you're a fan of Elder Scrolls, and Fallout, then I see no issue with loving this game unless you just don't like space adventuring with gear and tech. Love your content! Great work.

Thanks for making this, great video. Games are meant to be fun- let’s just have some fun. I have lots of hours in both games. Enjoyed them both. I wanted to mention that your feelings on the No Man’a Sky pulse drive mechanic (planet to planet), that they are that it’s essentially a hands off cut scene, much like the interstitial travel scenes in Starfield. They sure CAN be. I’ve definitely gotten up to refill my coffee before while flying 2 minutes to the next world. But- I have also been scanned and attacked, been alerted to objects if interest, and even just noticed mining opportunities in asteroids that fill the screen for a moment and require split second decision making to take advantage of. As often as possible, I keep my controller in my hand when I pulse from world to world now, because of all the little fun things that can happen between them. For me, it’s a little different- which is something I love about games. They CAN be different experiences from player to player. Thank you again for making this, have a great day.

in No Man's Sky, if you're playing in third person, it doesn't go black when you exit the ship. I think the only thing that can be considered a "loading screen" (actually it's more of a "cut-scene") in No Man's Sky is the warp animation when teleporting or warping to another star system.
@Renfail
@Renfail Ай бұрын
There are a few, yep!
@jmstover
@jmstover Ай бұрын
Pretty much this yeah, because each star system is loaded in. There really isn't any more dependent on the system you're on and the requirements they have for it (like PS, the warp is the only one. Everything else is just a design choice). But when teleporting in, the new system needs to get loaded in... so the warp/teleport loading screen. I mean, from a programming point of view, and what they're doing in the background... it makes perfect sense on why it's needed at that point. For the Anomaly, the loading is when you _enter_ the anomaly on your ship. There's the extra time taken for that while the structure is loaded in... One of the GDC talks, they talked about the data streaming... I think it was an Earth sized moon... and the procedural system would generate 400GB (??) of data as you walked around it. So, you can see the pop-in from the procedural system as it's trying to stream load data in just walking across a planet. Depending on how fast your moving that becomes worse. There's very few places they need to actually do a full on loading screen. Mostly just when they need to fully dump what's in memory and load something else. Space stations are part of the procedural system so they don't need to do it there, but the Anomaly can be zoned in anwhere, so they _do_ need to dump the memory and load it in.

yes, these are just transitions, so the image / perspective does not flip instantly. The game generates the basic data of a complete system once you warp into this. All the assets and structures are loaded in realtime while you are moving. If you fly to a planet you will see that the terrain is building the closer you get.

Ooooh boy, this is a heavily debated topic, thanks for taking it on and teting to be fair. It's difficult, as a NMS player since launch, I love it like a child I've seen grow up and often can forgive It's shortcomings and hype it's successes. With that said, I put 60 or so hours in Starfield when it came out with the full intention and hope that i would get to 1000 plus hours like I did with NMS, which I'm nearing 5000 hours 😮 I loved the story element in Starfield, I felt so connected to my player. I got nothing like that in NMS. The ship customization was something I was really excited about especially bc the NMS community had been asking for this for years to no avail. I was cautiously optimistic about the settlement building in Starfield but mostly bc I've enjoyed basebuilding in NMS so much, building hundreds of large bases ehich include castles, cathedrals, ships, towers, you name it. But my biggest hope was endless exploration, I wanted to see all 1000 planets in hopes that they'd put in 1000 more in the future. In short, what happened didn't happen bc of loading screens per se. I got engrossed so much in the story that I didn't explore much, then I got sucked into the whole end game plus that my friends were raving about and rushed to finish the story only to lose everything I worked hard to get and face the reality of starting over again, which I did for about 5 more hours then moved on to another game. The ship building was great but too complicated for me to really put a lot of effort into it. I figured it would be like base building in NMS but it didn't push the same creative buttons as NMS building does, I'm not sure why. The settlements were too limiting for me to keep me coming back. And while I enjoyed the combat, it wasn't enough as I could get that from COD, Cyberpunk, or even Assassin's Creed in different ways. Meanwhile, I never stopped playing NMS, I never do even when it's not my main game of the month and this is why..... 1. There's just enough variety to keep you exploring (more now). Just look at Reddit and you'll see the feinds looking for very specific multitools, ships, planets, animals, etc. 2. The game has a cool way of making you feel like nothing is that important. Aside for timed Expeditions, I can just chill with no anxiety about who needs me to save them or what romance needs nurturing. So many games I play then stop for a while, when I go back, I've forgotten the story or the mechanics but I'm so far into the game that it has real consequences. In Starfield I was like level 160 or something but can't remember how to manipulate menus or scan or change guns on the fly. Numerous times this has happened to me and I've stopped playing after literally 5 mins bc I'm like, I don't have time for this for a game I've already beaten. Feel the same about Cyberpunk. In NMS, they attempt to make everything easier. And while others games go deeper, it's easy to remember how to customize my ship in NMS. I never forget how to build something decent. Pirate battles are fun (except when you're trying to explore....) and the mechanics are simple so I don't have to think too much. Funny bc there I totally forgot that NMS has energy management in their ships, which is a fun dynamic, click a button and you have stromger shields, guns or engines. Use different weapons to break enemy shields, some weapons are better at close range, etc, or..... just simply shoot with the cannons til the enemy is dead, the thrill is up to you. Plus I love dogfighting on planets, way more fun! NMS is just so easy to get back into. 3. Whole I can list other reasons, I'll end with this big one; NMS has a 1 to 1 VR mode, meaning that whatever is in the 2D version is in the VR version (with some minor differences like companions dont move on their own, you can't see your cloak in camera mode, staff animation is different, etc) I can find something in 2D and go back and look at it in VR. VR takes combat from a 5 to an 8, you manually cycle modes and secondaries, reload, aim etc. Ohhhh wait, I forgot the biggest advantage NMS has, which is..... it updates with content EVERY 2 months. Anyone who has been around knows the feeling of getting a Sean emoji, and those new to the game haven't truly had the NMS experience..... yet until you see that emoji drop. My gf will testify her first update cycle when I put her on to NMS three years ago. Sounds silly to say, but the emoji symbolizes hope, hope and promise. Workds fulfilled huge promises that the community had hoped for for years. All that said, I look forward to Shattered Skies and new Starfield content. In the meantime, I hope to see you in the galactic terminal one day, I'll give you a tour of one of my bases.

A lot of people complain about the loading screens in Starfield but you have to remember that it's designed to work on console and mid range PC's and there's A LOT more interactable stuff than in No Mans Sky, Star Citizen, or Elite Dangerous Odyssey. If you wanted to get rid of the loading screens, imagine how much memory it would take when you land at New Atlantis and have to load every gun, armour, resource, and assorted nic nac in the city. And trying to stream that data into the game while you walk around on the chance that you might choose to go into that store or some other house would probably tank the performance. Or, they'd have to VASTLY cut the amount of interactable stuff to make things seamless. Flying around over planets is the same but faster. It would be nice to skim the surface till you get to a base, but imagine the pop-in you'd get as it tried to load everything at that base as you approach it at high speed. You see this even in GTA5 flight and that game has very little interactable stuff in only a few locations. I really like NMS and Odyssey for what they do well, but neither of them have the same world depth of Starfield.

Many haters of the game deliberately keep silent about this. And the detailing of the interiors in Starfield and the number of objects in them that you can interact with is simply incredible
@Square-0ne
@Square-0ne Ай бұрын
It is possible to do both. The Creation Engine handles the map like seamless tiles. Only the cell that contains the player and its adjacent cells are loaded into the RAM. It dynamically loads and unloads all assets according to the player movement. Then there are interior cells which are a bit more limited (your ship) but can also be chainlinked. It is also possible to preload interior cell in exterior cells (kind of precaching all assets before you enter a building). Even space is handled like a big cubic interior cell. Due to iterative improvements of the CE they have some old code that processes player position with limited precision (result of the chosen number format). This was no problem in the earlier games because the player was reference point for determining position data. In Starfield with the procedural terrain generation this changed to the spaceship with the player moving independently from the ship. It is possible to recode this aspect but according to one of Mr. Howards interviews they dropped the idea in development after a cost-benefit analysis. (Expensive dev time and possible delays vs. hitting the launch window). Maybe we will see this implemented later in the life cycle of the game if Bethesda really sticks to the announced long term support of Starfield or in TES6.

Hi great thoughts, I appreciate your balanced view and have enjoyed your coverage of NMS! One minor clarification from a game dev here. The exit from ship in NMS isn't a load screen, its transition screen, which are two totally different things. They fade to black not to load anything but to mask the transition from ship controller to FPS controller beside the ship at anchor point position. Not because of a need to load data but because they choose to not do an exit ship animation into the controller swap. =P The only true in-game loading scree is warping to systems and they did it exactly how I wished starfield would have. I have no dog in the fight regarding Starfield as I've never played it and probably never will, but NMS I've played since day 1 and it was the first 100% I ever had on Steam (I don't really care about achievements and such but earning the Immortal Title was a highlight for me). Hello Games started from the bottom with a game that got rightfully blasted for being boring and empty, but over the years has redeemed themselves by turning into something truly special and never charging a penny extra. Better combat, more variation in fauna, and up to very recently ship customization (fixed now) are my biggest gripes with the game. The new tech they're implementing from Light Now Fire is fixing many aspects and bodes well for the future. You have a very fair and balanced view of Starfield, and while I still won't likely ever play it (just don't find the Bethesda engine and "vibe" appealing anymore since Fallout), I like your take on it. No Man's Sky and Starfield both work in a similar way, as you described in your map section, Renfail. The difference is that Starfield only generates the planet around you, whereas No Man's Sky generates the entire system around you and only goes to a loading screen when you warp. I don't think people are complaining about the existence of loading screens in Starfield; they have an issue with the frequency. Granted, depending on how you play, you can minimize them, but the quest design often leads you down paths with many loading screens. They would be less immersion-breaking if more actual gameplay happened in between. I actually liked playing Starfield the same way I play No Man's Sky-as a planet explorer who sometimes tools around on my ship-but I dreaded doing most of the quests. I also really like Starfield's aesthetic and sound design. For example, I really like the sound effect that plays in the research menu. As far as the story goes, Starfield's was more cinematic, but it didn't resonate with me emotionally all that much. No Man's Sky's presentation is definitely an acquired taste, but in the end, it did actually have an emotional and philosophical effect on me.
@Renfail
@Renfail Ай бұрын
The frequency of maps in Starfield can also be adjusted by player preference; most of those loading screens are entirely optional if players use the overall fast travel system rather than individual menus/screens. And emotional fulfillment is going to vary WILDLY based on the player and their personal opinions =P

So I have been playing a lot of Titanfall 2 lately. My son bought Starfield on my computer and I wanted to check it out. I knew it wasn’t a FPS game but more of an adventure crafting exploring game. Which is cool. But I did a mission where I had to go talk to some botanists who were having pirate problems. My space ship just randomly lands on the surface. So I huff and puff my way over to the science lab. Get my mission and then huff and puff my way the opposite direction past the ship to go kill these space pirates. Between injuries in over exertion and space combat? I had used all of my med shots up. And I wanted to eat my face coming from Titan Fall 2 as to how slow and tedious travel was. With my grapple and my jet pack in TF2? I can be across the whole combat map in seconds, not minutes. Anyhow it kept saying I couldn’t fast travel because I was too heavy. So my son is probably gonna kill me but I dumped a bunch of stuff mid mission. Which didn’t help. And then I dumped a bunch more when I got back to my ship. Which as far as I can tell still didn’t help. And now the ship looks like a junk yard inside. But how much iron ore and space pistols does one guy need? Other than movement? The game looks great. I don’t mind the cut scenes other than doing drive bys with my space ship on pirate strongholds. They would really freak out if I called a Titan in on them…..wrong game sorry! The size of the game is ridiculous. Just exploring the Centauri system is gonna take some time I can see that. I can get a bit confused at what I am supposed to be doing between main mission and side missions. So I just blunder along. I probably would prefer if the medical stuff wasn’t so in depth. Maybe if you get back to your ship or a med bay it takes care of its self? I also raided a cool space pirate helmet and thought I switched helmets and instead? I just walked out of my space ship with no helmet on…..😢 Which caused a whole bunch of damage I am currently still coughing from. A warning or reminder would have been nice. I guess 3rd person has its perks!🤔 Cool game, I will play it again!👍

I loved Starfield...This was my 1st Bethesda game. I had know desire to play it but the youtubers made me want to try it & it was free on gamepass. I almost quit 3 times but on that last try i got hooked...I recently started back playing it to prepare for the dlc. My favorite thing about the game is the factx that u can do so many things that u don't have to do but u can. I didn't think i would bother alot of stuff but i did & enjoyed it. I didn't care for the main mission but those faction quest were awesome and i did all 4...I also dug deep into researching to get skills to be able to decorate ur penthouses & i put alot of time & effort to do that...I had an 18 wheeler version of a spaceship to deliver. I got into ship building ( which i didn't think i would b/c it looked to difficult), I.was a debt collector for the bank, bounty hunter, im apart of the vanguard, & recently i came back & ive learned how to scan a planet fully, then i sell the survey...the companions quest were dope also...No mans sky was kool but it forces u to do certain things that takes it away b/c u have to keep on fixing certain thing just to walk around. They shouldn't have startef the game off like that. Its way more discouraging to newer players like me...I fell in love with Cyberpunk 2077 & was wondering would i still like Starfield & i still love it & are ready for the dlc

While I agree with everything else you said in video, the world space is still the same as at launch. It's one playable tile at a time, the map only renders a portion of centred on you. If you keep running you'll hit the boundry. I just tested before commeting in case it had changed and I was just under 4K away from my ship when I hit the boundry whichs prompts you to return to ship or the map to switch tiles. It's still a massive area, so I don't think it's a problem really.

(I don't know English well and I'm afraid translators don't always convey my thoughts correctly). Channels like yours now have an extremely high value. I like the way you approach the discussion of games from the point of view of analysis and without too much bias. Nowadays, when most bloggers manipulate emotions, broadcasting negativity based on some kind of infantilism to the masses, and all this only for the sake of making money on activity and scandals in the comments. Channels like yours are very rare. I really liked Starfield, it has flaws (like any game), but they clearly do not make it unequivocally bad. Comparing Starfield to NMS, the games are completely different and have different goals. I'm amused by videos where people are clearly manipulative when they say that the NMS is better than Starfield and compare the strengths of the NMS to the weaknesses of Starfield, deliberately keeping silent about the aspects of the game where Starfield is vastly superior to the NMS. (For example, the story, the narrative, the combat system, and more subjective things like the world design, which is much more authentic in Starfield)

When I bought Strafield I was expecting a completely different experience. I thought that in addition to a few inhabited places, I would have a lot of planets to explore that humans have never set foot on. I was hoping for the mechanics of studying the atmosphere's composition, the surface of planets, temperature, pressure, or gravity, and the need to invent technologies that would allow you to land on them and survive. I hoped for interesting discoveries, anomalies, alien relics, way more diverse landscapes, etc. Don't get me wrong, I really like the graphic style, but it lacked that sense of danger, uncertainty about what lies ahead, and adrenaline when it suddenly turns out that you come across something that exceeds your imagination. Mechanics that would make you have to struggle to be able to safely set foot on an unknown globe. I was counting on hard SF. Unfortunately, this is more of a game for children than for fans of space exploration. I had high hopes for this game, because Elite Dangerous, for example, turned me off due to the lack of a single-player mode. However, I still hope that the game will take such a shape that I will start it again.

The graphical difference between the two is a really big deal too. Everyone keeps talking about the art styles, but a realistic style is much more intensive on systems than a style like NMS. Which is likely a huge factor in the reason one has these cutscenes and one doesn't.

Late to the party, but a couple of observations: A. Scale and fidelity are something to consider when looking at the possibility of "in-atmo" traversal. No Man's Sky's planets are about 1:1000* and the surface areas are considerably less than Starfield (about 1:20 scale*). No Man's Sky also has no densely populated areas on their planets. *half-assed internet research 2. Speaking of Star Wars; fun fact: no ships were ever seen re-entering a planet's atmosphere on screen until Episode III (and I THINK all scenes of "re-entries" seen are of ships crashing). Even George Lucas felt the need to skip that part (Star Wars being the torchbearer for realism that it was :) Side Notes: - Despite how each game's ships look on screen, Starfield's ships are VASTLY larger than No Man's Sky's. Even the Frontier is like 4x the size of your starter ship in No Man's Sky. - Entering space stations ESPECIALLY The Anomaly in No Man's Sky is definitely masking a loading screen. - I actually like how Mass Effect Andromeda handled their space/in-system exploration. Moving planet to planet was seamless but skippable, and they had a landing cutscene to mask the loading...

I don't know if it's because starfield is still young or if its for other reasons, but i'm surprised by the fact that starfield doesn't have many character build videos. If a player was to look at previous bethesda games such as skyrim and fallout 4, you can find hundreds of character build videos as if KZbin was the character creation storage box that was over flowing. But if you do a search for them for starfield you only find a handful of them. It's quite a big change to see players putting out character builds almost every day for years for the previous games then to almost not much for starfield. I could do a thief character build search for skyrim and be bombarded by such builds.
@Renfail

That's because builds are less of a thing in Starfield given the vastness of the skill/ability tree. It's massive. And SO many ways to play, plus the skill trees for gastronomy, flight, so much more. It's not just combat.

Totally agree here. I MUCH prefer Starfield's art style (for the most part). The creatures in particular have some really good designs. And the ship interiors have a level of detail that's just off the charts. Overall, I just prefer Starfield's more realistic, grounded approach. The ships in Starfield look like what I'd imagine real spaceships would look like in the near future. No Man's Sky ships look kind of like they were made by Mattel, like "Hot Wheels in space". That's fine, it gives the game a totally unique style, but I definitely like Starfield's approach better (even though it isn't nearly as "unique").

I know there has been a lot of comment on loading screens, and that most of them seem to be negative. Personally, I prefer the loading screens. I think this is greatly dependent on the power of the machine running the game, along with what sort of storage you have (nvme drives here). I don't have the latest and most powerful hardware (only a generation old though), but the loading screens for me in Starfield are usually under 5 seconds, with longer ones being 7-8 seconds. Landing and take off cut scenes are longer that the loading screens on my machine. In Cyberpunk 2077, it is a 20 second elevator ride (one way) into the Glen apartment. 40 seconds round trip... It may be more "immersive" to ride the elevator, but after a while I really wish it was just a loading screen. Speaking of hardware, I wonder if even the latest and greatest consumer hardware could render a Starfield surface world at the speed of spaceship flight. No Man's Sky doesn't try to render everything until you are out of the ship (animals and surface grass for example), so maybe they could cut it down enough to work.

I started my no man's sky journey back in 2018. To me no man's sky was real had more immersion than starfield. That seems odd doesn't it 🤔. I think its more literal. You are lost in an actual universe. You physically have to fix your ship repair your equipment then fly off to a space station nobody had or probably will ever see that planet or that spacestation. Its the actual reality that a million "travellers" are in the hello game universe, across 255 galaxy's. Thats not just a game thats actually happening. Amazing 🤯 Its the grouned human condition to survive and I as a person have to survive. I'm lost and in space. I'm not some role based off of a prefixed background. I'm not handed a gun and told to go kill hundreds of people over and over and over... Like more then jon wick 😕. Its me just having to survive. That was my first experience with no man's sky compared to starfield. Now of course its about exploring new worlds and just playing doll house sandbox with a space theme building outposts, mining facilities, and beach resort's. Can't wait for Light no fire. 🤗

The art-style and how cluttered it feels, there is something absolutely everywhere, and it feels nothing like space expleration. Starfield to me at least feels somewhat immersive and sensible while No Mans Sky just feels like a random sandbox without much else to it than the grind. But then again, I can't stand generic repetitive survival-games anymore and always come back to RPG's for the lore, characters and worldbuilding to immerse myself in.

The loading screens in Starfield don't really bother me, I just wish they'd done more to hide them. I'd much prefer some kind of cutscene instead of a static image with a progress wheel. I also don't like that you only get the landing cutscene the first time you land. The next time you land in that same spot, you just appear standing next to your ship. That landing cutscene makes it feel less like you're just teleporting to a spot on the map, plus they look badass. There should be an option to have the landing animation always play no matter how many times you've landed in that same spot.

However, I like starfield better, To me compared to NMS in my opinion; it's more realistic as far as graphics and character/ship design. Also, NMS story, it has one. Starfield has more of a survival open world type of a game and mechanics. And much better NPC's and story. And I could go on and on. I just what to mention one more thing. Look at the launch of NMS. Now look how much better it is. Also notice how long they have been working on NMS. So you just need to give starfield the benefit of the doubt. At least for a reasonable amount of time.

@@Renfail It could be better. Combat is an important pillar in any space game. I find good combat makes exploring more worthwhile. Missed opportunity if they don’t fully embrace it. Those who say the game is boring are those who find the combat lackluster and those complaints are legitimate. My point is, No mans sky is such a huge sandbox it really could do it all and become that game that has something for everyone. Instead of just being another ‘me too’ space game.

You enjoy the age-old dream of mankind, to be a bird. It's flat out fun and NMS trades us local maps (there are none) for a pseudo-fantasy-flight model where we can soar above a procedural landscape. Hello Games does a masterful job of standing on the arcade (almost cartoonish) side of the fence, engaging players and masking the mechanics of transitions. It's hard to say enough about how well they disguise loading screens with colorful animations and sound effects. As you call out, even inter-system travel is essentially a loading screen/transition (16:16) that feels like I'm still playing even though all I can do is play with a menu. It's surprising how easy it is to convince a player to watch streaking lights for 30-60 seconds while waiting to then press a button to be automatically landed on a pad or grabbed by station landing sequence. The former being another 10+ second loading screen/transition that looks like I'm flying down a landing bay, but is yet another colorful loading screen. Nice review.

@@BertthecatDevourerofDeities We could have long and involved discussions about the hardware/software side of games and consoles, but I'm far more interested in the player experience. So I'm not riffing off an esoteric (developer) view of when assets are loaded or unloaded ("actually"), but focusing more on non-playable game periods, i.e. transitions between character and ship control. In my comment I went out of my way to combine those terms to hopefully hint at this. When the player sits waiting to gain control of the game I will generally call that a loading screen. That's a casual reference. The former leads to discussions of engine mechanics, efficient design, and a host of great things to discuss in a standup or design/planning review (for developers). The latter is what humans, pushing buttons on controllers and keyboards see, hear and feel. The magic in a game typically comes from moments where developers overcome the inadequacies of the tech stack and produce a human experience which doesn't jar people out of the game. Likely why so many people talk about immersion. If I were to summarize, NMS is full of "loading screens" but they are well disguised so players largely enjoy the game without losing immersion. Some cats think lasers are bugs and chase them up walls. ;)

reason loading screen was ever mentioned is because gamers playing starfield had to endure many pictures while the game loaded up for more game to happen after the picture disappeared and the game came back. Those particular starfield players called those static pictures loading screens. So, in this comparison, if not any other. At the very least, we know in this case that's what everyone's been referring to in regards to starfields loading screens. Nobody has had or would have a problem with other forms of loading assest in a game. So, to suggest these forms of loading are comparable is being disingenuous or just obtuse. Or ... to simplify Some cats don't know what loading screens are. 🤗😉

I agree with everything you’re saying. Mods like Astrogate and Starvival shows Starfield’s true potential. If Starfield can blend in elements of both NMS and Star Citizen it would be the premier space game with its RPG elements. Overall Mass Effect is still the best sci-fi saga developed but Starfield could become the best space-sim/rpg. Also I would love the option of voiced protagonist. I think it’s time for these modern RPG’s to drop the deaf mute type characters or at least give the option to choose voiced or not. Anyone that has already played through Starfield once knows that it has potential there. That would allow us to see and enjoy our characters in more interactions.

It's certainly a design decision. As someone who does voice overs for my stream, I MUCH prefer the voiceless main character so that I can vill in that void for my audience.
@TheDeeboy717
@TheDeeboy717 Ай бұрын
@@Renfail yeah that’s why I think having an option to enable or disable voice characters would fill that void for so many. The actors that played Sam Coe and Andreja actually recorded voice lines for the main character in Starfield. If the audio and code for animations are already in game then I’d hope they can give a choice to enable them or not. Some days I just want to see more of my characters in voice dialogue.

I really like starfield. The only real gripe I have is the on foot travel on planets. Any sci fi game or movie would have vehicles. The pseudo planets in starfield only bug me a little and that's because no mans sky has spoiled me a bit. However, the mass effect games do the same thing and nobody really complains about it there. Another game that I had fun with is X4 foundations. It's more of a strategy game but you play it from the eyes of one dude. Very cool.

The only problem I have no man's sky is that it's pretty much seems like a lonely universe that's the second part the main part is you can't change your character you can't customize your character from the get-go you have to have one certain character then you have to find a space station which I spent over an hour and a half trying to do. I look at videos and I still couldn't find it. If this could change I'll go back to playing it I have no problem

I think people miss the mark trying to compare Starfield with NMS. I think Starfield is trying to be more like Mass Effect than NMS. Like Starfield, ME focuses on RPG, narrative, and gun combat. It's filled to the brim with load screens and limits to exploration. ME had land rovers, but you almost didn't want to use them because they're just not fun. In spite of all that, ME is one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, it was from playing Starfield that made me go back and play ME for the first time. In that respect, Starfield DOES take a lot of the ME elements and improve them. Starfield has better gun combat, more faction choices, ship building, and settlement building. I give ME the edge on "world-building", narrative, and NPC's.

Then you can walk a little further... but after a short while the games glitches and you fall through the floor. Furthermore: If you go over the boundaries, no POI´s or Animals will spawn. The game was never ment to have complete propper worlds like NMS, Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen.

I appreciate the RPG element of Starfield. I value character creation, a champaign, and engaging side quests. Loved having the ability to build outposts and spaceships. Likewise, loved having the ability to buy homes/ships and to decorate them. So, it's the RPG aspect that had me playing for over 700 hrs. And I don't really play video games. I agree with your sentiment about wanting the ability to commander our spaceship while on a planet. There is value in that. Even to fly a short distance would be fun and engaging

NMS has TONS of loading screens. They're just presented in a different way. You load in and out of your ship, Pulse Engine flight is essentially a loading screen that can go on forever, warping is a loading screen, whether in your ships or through terminals. I have no problem with Starfield's loading. And on my quite modest mini-pc, most of them are quicker than landing and exiting your craft in NMS. What does suck are the multi-segmented doors that take forever to open and make you wait to open the next one, and there's NO LOADING there. It's just dead time. The only real thing I think NMS has over Starfield is that even the stupid planets and moons can be fun to explore, where the stupid planets and moons in SF are just dead, boring rocks. Honestly, other than that (kind of big) difference, for every criticism you throw at SF, I can throw two back at NMS. They're both fun games with a lot to offer. We should all be thankful we aren't UbiSoft or Activision fanboys and actually get great games. I do have one other...minor complaint about SF though. You can't expect me to believe that every woman in the galaxy is flatter than a fifth grader. Bethesda. Come on. I thought you were going for a more realistic approach. I know a lot of women irl, and they don't all look like Sarah Morgan. No Space Lydia or Space Serana? Not even one? On 1000 planets?
